Ordered a G9 yesterday after watching endless reviews. Been binge watching your videos since discovering them at 6am and I have to admit I have a problem. Nothing to do with your films because you are an outstanding educator. No, my problem is that I'm like a child waiting for Christmas, sitting here itching for the ring of the door bell when the delivery man arrives. In the mean while, I'll just say that I cannot believe any other camera is supported by such excellent tutorial material presented in mind sized bites. Thank you so much.

This is one function of the G9 I've been able to actually use properly. I've used this to make copy prints of large photos/paintings for customers at work. One was an eight foot high painting with lots of small writing on it (names and dates from the 1914-18 war) that is hung in the local town hall from which we made an A2 size print. All the writing was still easily legible. The Leica 12-60mm helped maintain the clarity of the image too.

Hi, thanks for your presentation. I like the way you do it. Calm, clear voice. No hyperboles. Meanwhile a few notions and some additional info since things have changed. First of all hires on my Oly Em1.2 (whjich works identical to Panny's) has much more advantages than just a higher resolution. Due to the fact that the same pic gets exposed multiple times your noise drops down considerably. I have a D800e Nikon at my disposal and the Em1.2 (hence G9) just has less noise than that excellent FF sensor has. Also: your colours will look better a thing you really note once you go beyond ISO800 and especially in low light. It is a dramatic difference I'd say. I shoot noctilucent clouds in summer. A big difference! Finally the DR is better to compared to a single shot but inspite of the theoretical advantage to me it is far less notable than the noise part. What has changed is that Panasonic now has two modes for Hires and the added mode is one I really miss (now and then) on my Em1.2: the second mode gets rid of movement. Now there is no way you get a hires of the things that moved, but Panny upressed the single shot to 80 MP in places where there was too much movement and fitted that into the hires pic. If it are your main subjects there is no advantage in using it. But if your subject was still and it were just leaves and other things that are not the main subject this mode is a gamechanger! Another thing with the limit of ISO1600...just underexpose 1-2-3 etc stops. So set it to ISO1600 and underexpose by one stop and change it to normal in post. You now have ISO3200 etc. I find it very usefull since things fall apart (depending on your preference) at ISO6400 onwards with the single shot. But I found ISo25600 on my Oly *which has the same restriction) is perfectly usable in hires mode! It is like an ISO1600 shot in single shot mode on my Oly moreless. Again: since the Panny now can deal with motion you can use this as long as the main subject is not moving. When we finally look at photonstophotos or what the site is called we see that hires gets you very close to GFX-100 shots in IQ. But even if it is "only" like an S1R or Sony A7RIV that is quite a bonus!

The hi-res mode is particularly effective at removing moire and noise - moire due to shift sampling each color at each pixel location, and noise due to image stacking. I was able to use it to create a hi-res shot of the moon using a lunar tracking mount.It came out well except for some areas where atmospheric ripple caused motion artifacts. The new 2.0 Fw has a new hires option that is supposed to handle motion more gracefully.

G'day Marlene, I always pick up on a few things watching your tutorials, I use high resolution quite a lot, I was reading the most expensive camera in the world, takes a 100mp HR image, so our Panasonic Lumix-G9's do really well and a fraction of the price, I use it with great effect, with like that of a long exposure shot's of waterfalls or even with seascapes, I set it up so I'm getting very quick exposure times, done right you'd think it was a long exposure, but with bright crisp images, I love my lumix-G9 and lumix-G7, they compliment each other very well, the lumix-G7 with its great panoramic setting and the HR of lumix-G9, if Panasonic had of put their panoramic into the lumix-G9 it would of been the perfect camera.

Depends on how big a file you need. Most product photos end up as small photos in catalogues or on the web, so a huge file is not necessary most of the time. Even the large jpg will easily fill a 16x20 print and larger. I suggest you ask your client what their needs are, and then decide. Cheers!

Nice work as always @Marlene Hielema! Wondering about camera shake tolerance. I want to try hi rez mode but I do not have a tripod. I do have a monopod. Do you think this 80 mp will work with a monopod? And what are your thoughts about stabilization-- on or off? I hear people say use NO stablizers on a tripod, but I think that might be an obsolete fear. I'm thinking hi rez with monopod with stabilizers ON should work pretty well if shutter speeds are faster than 1/60. Am I too optimistic?
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 3 жыл бұрын
Hi there! Well my advice is always, try it and you'll soon find out. A wider angle lens will show much less camera shake than a long lens. I prefer to use a tripod for the high res shots. You might not notice it when posting to Instagram, but you certainly will if you zoom in 100% or want to make a huge print. Because at 80MP you can do that! When I'm using a tripod I take the lens stabilizer off. (The switch on the actual lens.) That advice is definitely not outdated. Some cameras (ie Canon Rebel) won't even auto-focus when the stabilizer is on, while the camera is on a tripod. So yes, try it and see what happens for your particular style of shooting, your subject, and your intended results. Have fun!

hi Marlene, I noticed that in autofocus, and in manual mode when I pressed shutter half down a portion of the scenery or frame fills the entire viewfinder. I wonder what is the explanation for that. As usual. great video, very informative. I just have a question. Taking a high resolution image with the G9 and a regular one that has been "res up" to match the pixel count. Do both images have the same level of detail?
@ImageMaven
@ImageMaven 6 жыл бұрын
No, not exactly matching. It's different looking detail. There are differences in my own images when 80MP was put side by side with the 20MP. Because when you res up files in Photoshop you do have a choice to apply sharpening. And that's where the difference lies (in my limited testing at least.) But if you need to res up an image (any image) for a wall print and it's already very good quality, detail, colour balance, decent pixel dimensions, etc. you will have no problem printing large. I've done it several times with smaller mp cameras. Plus, with the High Res 80MP of this camera, you're limited to scenes where there is no movement and that to me, is the deciding factor on whether to use the high res 80MP files, or not, more-so than the pixel dimensions. Thanks for asking! Cheers.

You could have two or three "things" on a single pixel in low res mode that could all appear in different pixels in XL mode. You can crop XL images more, if you must. Ihave noticed my 12-100 lens vignettes at 12mm, I could go for XL and crop it off (or zoom, I know), or zoom in on a distant mountain in post.

I really like your videos, the best explanations of how the G9 works. I made my first night photos in high resolution at 40 mpx (ISO set to 200, Mode P, MP Manuel) with a tripod and I confirm very good results with the Lumix G9. In addition what is great with this HR mode of 40 mpx (or standard photo at 20 mpx) night no need to mount the ISO. Of course only on subjects without movement. Another advantage and not the least of 40 mpx (or 80 mpx) is to be able to crop the image without loss! awesome !. Hey Marlene, Happy Thanksgiving from Tennessee :) Question, the other day I was shooting a morning scene using my G9 and the Pana-Leica 15mm. I shot a couple scenes and then my pictures began to take on this film covering as if the lens had gotten foggy. I cleaned it but to no avail. So I shifted over to my Sigma 56mm and same thing. Hmm, I thought, I've royally screwed up my precious G9. So I pulled over to a spot and begin tinkering with the menu and (can't exactly recall} but an offering of deleting pixels (???} came up and I thought...sure why not. I mean it couldn't be a reformatting of the card. Voila, camera shooting pristine again. So, what exactly did I do? Yes you can. But you can also print files that size from the regular everyday 20mp G9 files. As long as the original images are of high quality, properly exposed and good focus you have a lot of room to “res up” especially if you take in the viewing distance. Us photographers tend to look at prints “too” close up. Cheers!
