Bit late to this fix, but really well done - adapting what you have is a sign of a true maker. Those speakers are £99 now, so it was still well worth attempting the fix rather than consigning to landfill.

A quick tip for hot glue removal. Grab yourself some of that canned air you use for cleaning computers. Turn the can upside down and spray it onto the hot glue. The super cold spray that comes out makes the hot glue instantly brittle so it can easily be chipped away with a screwdriver and or cutters…whichever is appropriate for your particular situation.

Using micro USB connectors on a device like this is just asking for trouble. Unfortunately you get what you pay for these days and the chinese are experts at cost minimization. Anyway, greetings from New Zealand. I'm an electronics technician with 40+ years under my belt of servicing to component level domestic and professional audio products (and many other things!) and I still enjoy watching others working on things as it gives me ideas. This video was useful to show me what these units are like inside and how to get into one. Not that I have had one land on my repair bench, but it's always possible.

Love the look of these speakers. My brother has an older model that is powered via a barrel jack rather USB. It came from eBay without a power supply and there are various voltages, so getting a replacement is awkward. I recently found him a Marley Liberate Bluetooth mini speaker at the local thrift shop for $5. Big sound for a small speaker, although it doesn’t quite match the larger model for deep base of course.

Got one of these. They didn't design reinforcement for the connector or chose a weak connector design. That's why I use a magnetic break away connector and cable. @AG-cg7lk2 жыл бұрын
I know you have a desoldering iron, but have you considered using a spring loaded solder sucker instead of the braid? It's a lot easier to use and quicker too.
@samholdsworth4202 жыл бұрын
I have both, prefer the braid dunno why
@sw61882 жыл бұрын
Also cheaper. Using braid all the time gets expensive. I have been doing repair work on domestic and professional electronics for 40+ years and the only time I use braid is when I have an IC or some complex part with multiple pins that is going to be difficult to remove from the board. Otherwise I just use a manual solder sucker and have done my whole life. I am considering buying a desoldering station but it's not high on the agenda - I can remove parts quickly with the manual tool.

You could cover over the modified plastic plate with one of those cheap USB-to-magnetic adapters. That way you cover the botch and extend the life of the port with a magnetic connector that wan't hurt the device.
@JoshuaJoshua02 жыл бұрын
I read some of those can do damage if the ground pin isn't connected first
@OntologicalQuandry2 жыл бұрын
@@JoshuaJoshua0 As an electronics engineer I can tell you that is likely impossible. In fact, since no connector is perfect in its own right, I can't think of any way such damage might occur, but I can't tell you what's right, you can only find out for yourself (or not).
@JoshuaJoshua02 жыл бұрын
@@OntologicalQuandry Awesome! I'm glad to hear that. Thanks for explaining it.
@OntologicalQuandry2 жыл бұрын
@@JoshuaJoshua0 OK, well let's explain what your fear might be. Without the ground, the positive only is in contact, but without the ground no current can flow and no potential can be established, so you can't burn anything or zap anything. You might think, oh, but the power supply has no ground so there may be some power noise on the power line, but that is equally true of the ground since it is not actually grounded. The only means I can think is if you have another truly grounded thing connected and then connect the power, but even then, the energy involved is so small that it can't harm anything.
@JoshuaJoshua02 жыл бұрын
