Being able and confident you can change a tyre with levers when touring or remote is a great skill to have. Weather its changing a damaged tyre, or cleaning out a bead.
You should always give this a go in the garage, with the tools you carry before heading out, if you intention it to be able to do this.
I was surprised how easy the Prado 150 was to change with nothing but leavers, and a hydraulic jack.
Hope this helps ot gives you the confidence to give it a go.

This is really fascinating to watch. I've repaired motorcycle punctures out on the trail, and decades ago swapped tires on an old tire machine. But I've never seen a car tire replaced by hand, and wow look at those massive tire levers. Thank you for showing us how to do this.

I Tried to do mine almost got it done, but I messed the edge of the tire. I used a screwdriver, but it was my first time. Lesson learned. Thanks for the video.

Nice video. I much prefer your method to crack the beads then mucking around with ratchet straps. Definitely gonna use that

Another quality “how to” video, a little reminder to the punters that you should deflate the tyre prior to attempting to break the bead with the jack perhaps? But love the idea of the motorbike rim protectors. 😉

Ha ha I am 73 and do like you since I was a teenager, never found a tyre shop I felt comfortable with, When the wheel is off you can clean up the rims , no garage will bother, damage your sensors these days, sorry mate could not help it. Thats £60 please plus pairing it to the ECU. World of scammers. one changes ones tyres so infrequently one can spend a day doing a good job. The video is excellent , done in a correct relaxed way. best video on tyre changing I have seen. Like the use of tape around levers giving that extra bit of protection on plastic rim protectors.

Easiest way to break a bead I ever found was to have really low tyre pressure and turn a sharp corner :) Wasn't quite what I wanted to do at the time but it worked a treat.

There is an assumption that you need to use a bead braking gadget every time . Some tyres will pop just by you bouncing on them . Hold onto the side of your car feet together and gently bounce and it may pop. Can save a bit of time , if not the jack is a perfect method, much better than banging some steel gadget under the rim , causing possible damage.

You could line up your BFG letters with your valve stem and do the same with all wheels. That way you can quickly find your valve stem in the dark or mud.

Agreed. JJ's AT tyres look sufficiently well used and the sidewalls aren't TOO strong (i.e. they have some give). However, by way of example, I have an older 2011 Mickey Thompson MTZ tyre, never used and strong sidewalls. Trying to get this SOB off the 2nd side of the rim is close to impossible, and if I were on the side of the track - that would make it even more difficult than at home. I'm going to research any special tools that may help in this case 'cause I'd like to be able to remove the tyre whilst out in the desert.

you should really lay the rim on the floor and push the tyre on to it when fitting, might find its a bit easier

Spooning the tire into the rim is easiest on a standard bead rim. Something like a semi tire with a .5” tire, then forcing the tire over is sometimes quicker. I did the tire game professionally for 10 years. Now I do my own tires by hand when i can, with tire levers and a bubble balancer or beads depending. I use this procedure except I have a specific bead breaker. Tire machine is in the works after the holidays though

The problem with using dish soap is that it never dries, so sometimes the tyre can spin on the rim.

@@jjsadv you might be surprised. You should mark your rim and tyre with a marker, let your tyres down to 15psi and do some serious off roading, then check your marks.
@jjsadv
@jjsadv 2 жыл бұрын
@@officialWWM I go a lot lower than 15 PSI off road (rocks and sand, and towing from time to time..) I haven’t marked them, but did 90K on the last set and had no issue (only a couple I have removed and re installed in that time).. If they do move its cant be much of an issue I guess. This set are all new, so I haven’t used any soap yet.. If I do, I will mark it and see. BTW, the Prado only has about 4 HP, 1 HP per wheel, so probably cant spin them anyway..

For a 6th spare to get you out of trouble, you dont have to bother. If you are rotating 6 wheels then I would as it will be on the car for a while on long runs.
