I recently refinished an original 1892 Winchester manufactured in 1911 that had a replacement butt stock. I had a heck of a time getting the butt stock and forearm to match. I ended up using a different concoction on the forearm than I used on the butt stock. Finally got a match but it does help to have a receiver separating the two.

Use a piece of dowel rod or an old broom handle for working on the fore end. You'll be able to hang it with the butt stock. You can hold it in place with a couple dobs of hot glue which will come right off when you're ready.

you can stam out dents with a regular steam iron just put an old clean T shirt over the dent. Put the steam iron over the dent wait a few minutes 1 or 2 and the dent most times will come out.

I received what I think is a rifle sold by Western Auto. Your videos will be very useful. Any thoughts (video?) on improving the action by polishing surfaces and edges, and improving the loading by working on the loading gate?

Nice renovation but don't you think using a lighter "oil/finish" on the buttstock would have been better for the matching ?

Arb ra The buttstock was a dark walnut. Easier to stain the forend a dark walnut to match.

Dean Scholl What do you mean? Did he do a bad job? The reason why I ask is because I have a marlin 336 and thinking of getting a boyds stock and haven't seen much about them for a 336.

Yeah you can buy a gun with mismatched wood. Paint the wood or get some good wood stain. Also if you get runs in the finish,......you sand it down with steel wool and do it again till its finished. I think it turned out ok.

The only thing that's a bummer is you'll have to re-zero your nice rifle.

Jason Simone I haven't taken it to the range in a long time. I'm going to try a different powder and some Hornady ELDX 140g.

OK cool, let me know how it does. I just picked up one in the Remington 660 but I haven't shot it yet. I just ordered a set of reloading dies and I found 3 boxes of old stock Remington 120gr. Factory ammo at my local gun shop for 30 buck's a box so I bought them all.
