Marlo Thomas was way ahead of her time in the way she thought back then. I'm thinking this interview was perhaps in the 70's. I look up to the way she thought then, and watched her in That Girl, she was one of my ideals. I so agree that at 24 yrs. old it was early to get married. I didn't wait, I married at 20 yrs. old, big mistake. Though, having a Sicilian dad it was what he said that counted. When she said she has baggage and so does Phil, awesome. Take both baggage's and put them together, it can work. Happy it did/does for them.

I never forgot her views on marrying later in life. I also remember her saying that it was family occasions at her home when she was growing up that cemented in her mind that marriage was not for her. She remembered her uncles sitting at a holiday table having dinner and a discussion. One of the wives interjected a thought into the conversation and she heard one of the men say “what does she know? She’s only a woman”. She said that stuck with her. She told her mother she was never going to get married.

I’ve always admired Marlo Thomas, both on-screen and off. I’ve been watching Make Room for Daddy recently, having seen some of the shows when they first aired and I was a kid. Although the shows are steeped in 50s and 60s culture, a recurring theme is the struggle between men and women to define their roles. Sometimes there’s a lot of anger and shouting, odd for a 50s/60s comedy, but foreshadowing shows like All in the Family. Sometimes it’s not played for laughs, and often Danny Williams learns something about how he had behaved and admits he could have done better. The 4th season in which Danny was a widower trying to raise his children alone has some sad and poignant moments. So perhaps Marlo saw those things in her father’s TV and real families, and they influenced her feelings about families, marriage, and relationships between men and women.

First she laments reporters asking HER about the state of her relationship with Phil versus asking Phil, implying that is sexist. Then she says she was happy about the fact her stepsons needed a woman’t touch in their lives. You can’t turn on staunch feminism one moment, then laud your femininity the next. Feminism needs to be softened and re-defined.
@msr11165 жыл бұрын
Marlo is the product of a traditional upbringing with specific expectations and defined gender roles, but chose higher education and a career, avoiding marriage and opting out of children in contrast to her mother. I think Marlo was conlicted for a long time, which isn't shocking, since feminism could be militant, uncompromising and rigid about women shedding their old roles. Few realized that would be much easier said than done.

Amanda Athanas she did contradict herself unknowingly which shows that even if you try to be aware , institutional sexism is in all of us to some degree, even Marlo. A man can be as nurturing as a woman , Marlo knows this but I’m sure she meant to say that the younger sons missed having a female in the house that was more nurturing than Phil could be. Have to ask his children which one of them is more nurturing as a parent and in which ways.

Amanda Athanas if femanism became feminine it would be about the stregnth and weekness of God's creation.

Its funny, Marlo definitely saw things growing up that really formed that real aversion to marriage. Interesting.

janets9179 yes, huge democrat & she is a big feminist. What me and my friends always thought was funny? With all her pontificating about we women having it hard, she never appreciated or admitted that with out one particular MAN - her Dad, who was not just comedian, TV star BUT a big Hollywood mogul, its not for sure she would have gotten so far so fast. It MATTERED.

@@janets9179 There is a recent big study in articles online that found that a high % of young women and men don't ever want to have children and they said it's exhuasting and expensive. The study also found that people at age 70 who never had any children are just as happy as those who did.

On one hand, she doesn't understand why only the woman is asked questions about the relationshisp and the home, and seems offended by the expectation; and then she completely understands Phil's sons needing a woman in their lives, rather than question why an all-male household isn't enough". Females and males are different, but feminists would rather strain to match men toe-to-toe, rather than embrace the gifts of being a woman.
@gcrichman53Ай бұрын
lucysmith6827 Women and men girls and boys are actually biologically and psychologically more alike than different we are human people with *minor* biological differences so we can reproduce and most psychological research studies find that we are more alike than different in our personalities,abilities and behaviors and they find much greater *individual* people differences. In 1972 Marlo released a critically acclaimed book Free To Be You And Me and then won an Emmy award for the TV special in 1974 which showed that girls and boys are more similar and that they should really be free of sexist limiting harmful gender roles and gender stereotypes.
