Yeah, there are a couple of lines of vorts talking about that, they also say they know him, or tell him to calm himself. also it seems that you were going to have ally vorts along side you in the uprising, there are lines for following the player or that the player is in the line of fire, and interactions for citizens back and forth. There's some info about the unfinished friendly fire systems in HL2 where apparently citizens were ment to shoot at Gordon after they say WE TRUSTED YOU! Or YOUR NOT THE MAN I THOUGHT YOU WERE! The reason friendly fire was cut in HL2 was because it completely broke sequences and felt unneeded, along with breaking story. Like if Gordon was the heart of the resistance, why would he be gunning down every Rebel he meets or purposely putting them in friendly / crossfire? And there was points where you could kill important characters and break cutscenes in early builds aswell. From a story standpoint, it felt dumb.
@Zmeeed013 жыл бұрын
There is even a theory to "retcon" that: since Gordon accepted G-Man's offer in the end of HL1 (under the threat of giving Gordon a battle that he has no chance of winning, though) he isn't free anymore, so any of his actions against G-Man's script simply don't affect anything.

Interesting trivia that I found relating to how the ai reacts to friendly fire on other ally NPCs. In "We've got Hostiles" there is a section where you can save scientist from turrets and a fire door, who trust you. These scientist, however, loose trust in you if you shoot the g-man on the balcony. This is one of the only few times in the game you get a good shot at the g-man, and it's interesting that he's "friendly fire", and that the other scientists CAN see you shooting at the g-man. -> there's a cut scripted sequence here for the g-man running away when you shoot him at this location, but it seems to not be entirely removed, since other NPCs still notice him getting shot.

The story in the final game seems hinged on the idea that Gordon is lawful good. It's possible that at some point in development the idea of including friendly fire was canned because of how behind they were on making the game, and the story was changed to make it seem like less of a technical limitation and more of an artistic decision.
@LonelySpaceDetective3 жыл бұрын
@@nackskott12 I doubt the story was changed to justify the removal of friendly fire everything considered, but I think you have the gist of it. I imagine friendly fire was discarded because of the logistical issues in making sure scripted sequences accounted for it, the tonal and thematic issues on Gordon the big hero of the resistance murdering innocent people, and the simple fact that, well, as fun as friendly fire is it's usually something that players just do a few times then move on; wouldn't be missed too much by most.

Looking at the details that went into the consideration of friendly fires, Valve developers was ahead of its time paying attention in details. The way Barney and grunts tolerates friendly fire out of crossfire consideration? That was awesome. On other hand, I still remember in Skyrim, I hated any combat scenario where there's allies involved, because you might just have accidentally sliced them and incurring wrath of the entire city.

Its like there's not even a bullet trajectory to at least manage some zig-zag maneuvers, the moment you hear the "PEW PEW" it already registered as damage. Lmao, I think the spark in their guns is just decoration, might as well not even have it. Now a grunt you can see the strafe and somewhat dodge it, it's amazing, they need to mass produce these limb tearing pistols.
