Hi there. In this video I'm gonna tell you all about the Russian version of Half-Life 2. What works and what doesn't. And what I do know is that there isn't just one, but two Russian versions of Half-Life 2 out there. The latest one exists solely to improve the original version, which wasn't very good apart from having decent work put in here and there. Enjoy the video.

Во втором эпизоде после выхода из пещер Аликс говорит: "...это солдаты Комбайна!" Круг замкнулся и Буковцы всё таки споткнулись на бреде, который породили сами.)

I thought this video was very interesting as an American who doesn't know how to speak much Russian. Sometimes, when you compared the good versus the bad voice acting, I could hardly tell the difference (certain scenes for Alyx), but for others, I could definitely tell you were spot on (Barney, but it was so obvious I don't think anyone could be confused). What surprised me, however, was the voice actor for Judith Mossman. The Russian voice actor seemed brighter and more expressive than the original English voice actor. Judith's English voice actor is talented, but she was my least liked character because I always perceived her as somewhat awkwardly indifferent a lot of the time. Although I don't know Russian, I am familiar with the language. Most of the music I listen to is Russian and Ive been to Russian church services. But I'm learning now that being familiar with it in that way is useless for recognizing tone in conversation. I was especially confused at 42:50 because to me the pace Dr. Kleiner is speaking at almost sounds just as fast as Americans speak English lol (well, at least for my region)

Насчёт проблем с таймингом из конца видео. Скорее всего это проблема кеша. Помню в далёком году 2016 у left 4 dead 2 были проблемы с русской озвучкой - файлы были, а опция не работала. Но если просто закинуть файлы ру дубляжа в англ дубляж, перестают работать абсолютно все тайминги, т.е. идут вечные перебивания и обрывы. Исправлялось это просто - командой rebuildaudiocache или какой-то подобной, точно не вспомню

Ну тут более сложная ситуация, так как он и в английской версии так говорит, не смотря на то что на всех плакатах и мониторах написано cmb (combine), то есть это официальное название. Главный сценарист серии игр сказал, что не помнит что он писал эту реплику, и что в моменте он наверное имел ввиду, что Брин считает, что название "combine" не раскрывает всю суть этой организации, и что "Вселенский союз" более глубокое определение этой всемогущей империи.

Hey, just want to note that the weird speeding up of voice lines might be due to the issues shown around the 1 hour mark regarding voice lines going on for too long. Unless they were given access to the actual .vmf files themselves, they wouldn't be able to mess with the timings on triggers controlling voice lines.

vmf files have nothing to do with choreographic voicelines. It rather "tunes" the texture (vtf) and translates as "valve material file". The speed is represented in scenes.scene file. It is tunable by making the line longer or shorter. Also because Buka had no idea how to change anything in such a file they just left it as it is - all the lines kind of in place but are not. As well as the missing lines too. The fix from a random dude contains one single file - scenes file and it fixes literally everything. All the stuff being fixed there. Its either Buka was lazy enough to not figure out how to dig the file or just didnt knew how to do it

Yup, some lines can be sped up due to limitations of audio size in hl2 so u SHOULD put this huge russian word into small english "move" or "run" or something Also 54:12 she was talkin about Station 7 being red barn. i Swear this sentence sounds fine in russian, but may be confusing after translating back to english

I knew what she was talking about. I said 'in retrospect it's obvious what she actually meant by it.' Except the way the sentence is phrased does not sound fine. She talks about the station, then she talks about the river, and then says 'that's the old red barn.' (which almost sounds random). Maybe it was due to acting being bad, I don't know. Buka entertainment rephrased that dialogue, so I wasn't the only one who got confused by that moment.

It was basically directly translated word to word from English but due to how Russian works, it sounds like that last part is just a random sentence that doesn't really fit anything said previously since a river can't be an old red barn and sector 7 was already discussed about prior to this point and due to how it was said it simply seemed irrelevant to it

Ah yes, Valve contracting a software translation company to do "professional" voicework. iirc SDL has been used for most of the translated versions and most of the dubbing is ass. I'm happy for russians for getting a proper redubbing, most countries didn't have that privilege 😩.

Одна из проблем попыток оценивать актёров озвучки - отрыв от контекста. Тот же доктор Брин - да, диктатор. Но он не является самостоятельно пришедшим к власти диктатором. Он является хреном с горы, администратором мелкого пошиба, который благодаря попаданию в конкретное время и место по совершенной дурости получил возможность представить человечество, после чего и был назначен смотрящим за человечеством. Обычный такой человек-презерватив, на котором тупо во времени наросло немного навыков себя ставить более солидно, но без камер и подготовки всё это ДОЛЖНО слетать. Поэтому оригинальный актёр озвучки, несмотря на то, что "звучит хуже", является лучшим актёром озвучки. Потому что оригинальный персонаж так же рассыпается под давлением. Поэтому и актёр озвучки в поздних сценах при личном общений должен давать петуха, запинаться, оговариваться, мямлить, подметать пятой точкой полы. Новый же актёр озвучки - типичный плохиш. Хорош как плохиш, но абсолютное непопадание в амплуа.

Вот именно ООНом Брин и является - никто и ничто, но инструмент в руках врага, потому что "ну раз ООН, то да". Но из-за остановки войны она записана в блистательные победы.

Странные замедления и ускорения - это недоработка звукорежиссера, а может даже продюссеров. Потому что это классическое "попадание в тайминг по времени". Скорее всего для разработки первой озвучки не учитывались технологические возможности движка, а может их на тот момент и не было. А записанные реплики ужимались или растягивались согласно таймингу оригинальных реплик.

Записаные рекплики вообще потом не подгонядись в файле scenes, файл остался нетронутым английским оригиналом с английскими таймингами. По этому без подгона под те тайминги или изменения файла произошло это. Благо фикс из инета это фиксит

Its just a lot of tinkering with the voice wavefile (WAV) tuning all stuff to appropriate settings, recording in the time and trying to match lipsync although its optional since lip sync is automatic in HL2. Then tuning all the stuff and sticking it into right places with right timings in scenes file and thats it. Of course voicing the stuff is more of a hard thing. I find "Audacity" is really good tool for recording voiceover since it have many options to play with the voice the way you like.

When I played HL: Alyx, that has only English official voice over, I was surprised to see Russian newspaper, that I was able to read fully :D

Its not soviet union. There was no confirmed information of where it is but according to locations each map is separated across the world. For example Ravenholm is Saratov, Russia. The coast is some coast from some island in an ocean. C17 has a lot of Lithuanian vibes etc.

Олег Федоров в роли Гмана доставляет именно за счет странной манеры речи, поэтому брать актера, который будто с картошкой во рту говорит вполне логично. Гману подходит плохая дикция ведь он не человек, но Мэтт и Сэнди звучат просто убого (нА пОмОщЬ!). Бука переозвучила Мэтта, но почему то Сэнди им было лень озвучить. Еще голос Андрея Ярославцева всплывает в нескольких фразах ("они направят тебя на путь") и тут же пропадает, но полностью переозвучивать всех граждан Буке было лень. Вообще, в "обновленной" локализации Буки лень слошь и везде, актеры - единственное достоинство (Кляйнер Полонского - это выше всяких похвал). SDL хотя бы заморочились с голосами комбайнов и объявления звучат жутко и атмосферно. Григорий и вортигонты тоже на высоте озвучены. Хотя учитывая, что файлы с озвучкой граждан-мужиков были перепутаны в первой версии, звуковик возможно был в стельку пьяный когда Борис Исаров записывал фразы. Кстати мне больше нравится дубляж Брина от SDL. Прозоровский конечно крут, но голос Бориса Сосны по своему ламповый и больше подходит персонажу. Интересный факт: Борис Сосна, голос Брина от SDL, озвучивал русского мужика-контрабандиста в IGI 2 Covert Strike на английском.

Would be cool if the combine called their faction something like 'alliance' and 'combine' would be how the rebels and red pilled citizens would call them. As I understand it, in lore they do have other name 'Universal Union', imagine if in the russian version they said 'union' lol. Still, if there was hl2-world rpg or 'immersive sim' (rpg-lite) game, would be cool if different factions had multiple names people refer to them, kinda like the New Vegas Caesar-Kaiser thing.

I think the issue with the male citizens playing the wrong voicelines is due to the voiceline files being saved with wrong names (whoever was naming the files may have swapped them around). I assume that's the case, would probably need to compare the individual files with english and russian dubs to see if that is the case

I think something terrible happend and when they actually tried to tune the scenes file they somehow messed up really bad and move all the lines one line above and since they are there in a random position where it will appear is just pure rng

Glad you made this video in English, so us foreigners who speak very little or no Russian at all can understand it too. I must say that, for us non-Russian speakers, not even the original dub sounded that bad, except for the notable moments of awkward silence, interruptions, and voice actors suddenly changing mid-sentence. Well, except for Barney, good grief the original voice is famously terrible. It's English Castlevania SOTN levels of bad I daresay. It's an odd dub when you look at it, though, because it certainly feels like there was little to no coordination between actors when it was made, most of them seemingly just doing their thing, apart from Mossman and the new Barney, who almost have no business being this good. But overall, a very educational and especially entertaining video.
