Exploring CARSHALTON Conservation Area

I am out on my government sanctioned walk and exploring the Carshalton Conservation Area near the High Street. The Town is a historic Village in North Surrey (Greater London) dating back to Neolthic times. In this Vlog, I walk around West Street, Festival Walk and the 1.3 Hectare Sutton Ecology Centre which is managed by volunteers of the Sutton Nature Conservation.

Hello again Marq We seem to be having a flurry of discourse, which is a delight Sir. I was a little disappointed that you didn't feature the 'Greyhound Pub' at the Carshalton Ponds. As a coaching inn dating back a few hundred years (pre Georgian I think,) it sits within the scope of the other special buildings you brought to our attention. I am going to add my experience of it; to flesh out a story. As a precocious teenager; my older sister's friends accepted me and allowed me to join them sitting in the high backed oak settles (of 'The Dog'). Discussing (arguing, in the best way) words, poetry, art, music and the changing times of the Sixties Etc. Etc. Then maybe off to Eel Pie Island for jazz and a dance. My precociousness advanced further! PS. I have just watched 'Ancient Isle 3' and you did talk about and show The Greyhound. Thank you but I'm keeping in the ramble above, 'cos I'm mildly cantankerous.

lovely marq. i also spent a little time in carshalton too as a boy. it was my mums playground when she was litlle. she used to tell me she used to wash her dolls in carshalton ponds :) wish she were alive to see this. thanks marq!

Hello Marq. I love your programmes and especially this one. I worked at the Lodge for 6 years when it was London Borough of Sutton's Children's Social Services. When this transferred to Sutton the building was sold and I believe it is now being made into flats. It was a very interesting building to work in but I disliked the basement where some of our files were archived. It was a warren of small connected rooms and quite eerie lol. I have discovered that the original dwelling was 18th C and the current house was built 1865 by Richard Gunter, a tea merchant, on land once known as "Cook's Orchard". Became the Southwark Diocesan House in about 1921 and was then bought by Carshalton Council in 1944. Hope this helps

Marq … I measured the London Plane tree last spring and it is now just over 24ft around at 5 feet above the ground .. another great Vlog
