It wasn't his chin, because he was good for taking a knock down at least once a fight( I'm exaggerating), his recovery heart and resolve was unmatched(not to mention his adjustment ability mid fight). Marquez is one of the kings of what I think of as aggressive counterpunching: specializing at countering people while fighting at close range and/or in exchanges, often ones that he started. He knew the technical side of boxing inside and out. I remember one of the HBO Legendary Nights documentaries saying about Alexis Arguello that Arguello was a classic boxer, meaning that every move you make in the ring, every punch you throw, does different things with your positioning, the openings that are created or closed, etc., and Arguello knew them all. And so did Marquez. My personal favorite moment of his though will always be his parry into a 3 punch combo on Manuel Medina in round 2 of their fight, and it's another great example of how Marquez used the uppercut. It just doesn't get any better than this: kzbin.info/www/bejne/i2HGY5-OetV5rs0

I didn't even need to watch the video to click "like." Marquez is one of my all-time favorites, and possibly my favorite Mexican fighter, even over the great Salvador Sanchez and Julio Cesar Chavez. On the surface he seemed like just a skilled technician, but he was adaptable and intense. Nothing seemed to deter or discourage him. Marquez was a master technician like Sanchez, but had a long career and perseverance through setbacks and adversity to give him a slight edge in lifetime achievements, while Sanchez's was cut short. And while Chavez had a long career and many fights, a throwback to old school fighters, he didn't fare as well above lightweight or as he got older. Marquez aged incredibly well, and had remarkable achievements far beyond his optimal weight class. (For that we can give partial thanks to boxing officials for a wink-nudge lax attitude toward almost certain use of PEDs by Marquez, Pacquiao, etc., late in their careers.) Marquez recognized that versatility didn't come naturally for Pacquiao. Marquez first faced the one-trick pony version of Pacquiao, who built an early career on a lightning quick right jab/straight left, boom, goodnight combo. But as Roach refined Pacman's style to include more lateral movements and versatile punching, Marquez still managed to adapt. He knew Pacquiao tended to revert to his early career tactics of relying on a pump fake jab, jab and straight left, without much movement or footwork. That's what cost Pacquiao a clear win over Bradley. In their fourth match Marquez recognized Pacquiao getting greedy and lazy, relying on that predictable pump fake jab, jab and straight left combo. Marquez timed him perfectly.
