Union Minister Smriti Irani proposed the Child Marriage (Amendment) Bill 2021 in the Lok Sabha stating that the legal age of marriage for girls should be raised to 21, which would lead to gender equality and women empowerment. This proposal got both praise and criticism from the Parliament. But why is this bill being criticized? What are the benefits of this bill? What is the actual issue, and the root cause behind the problem of Child Marriage in India, and is this change enough to solve it? I talk about all these things in this video.

As a doctor, I have seen so many girls getting married at a younger age while their still not mentally matured, they are prone to suffer postpartum blues, postpartum depression and in extreme cases postpartum psychosis. The step to increase the minimum age limit of girls to 21, would ensure to decrease problems like these.

No matter which party you support, you have to agree that this tackles a very important issue for women in our country. At the age of 18, people can barely manage themselves. How are they supposed to provide support to a partner as well. If people marry later, they have a better understanding of themselves and the world thus are better equipped to handle the challenges of married life. And yes, as Dhruv said that this bill needs to be implemented properly on ground level, but it is undoubtedly a good starting point.

Those people who are saying that this law will take away the choice of women to marry at 18, are ignoring the simple reality of India where most marriages are actually "arranged marriages". So, it's not really about taking away the "choice", it's about postponing the inevitable to a later age where the women might get the chance of higher education and working towards their career. Beacuse, let's face it, we all (both men and women) will be forced to marry at some point, but at least women will now have the chance to be at a better position educationally and/or financially (those women who would have been married away at a younger age).

I think to complete education with a minimum degree takes 22-23 yrs for both men and women. I think it is good decision by India to make it both 21 so teens can focus more on their education and postpone marriage until minimum degree is achieved. I support this bill. Because I know the consequences of getting married (specially arranged aka forced) I got married just after a month I became 18. And my parents are not illiterate or backward part society both of them are well educated in fact both are working government officials. I was a topper upto 12th. I appose for the marriage for days but I can't go against them. My in-laws were educated and government servants too. After marriage I started my college bt I was unable to concentrate on studies as l will have to choose my priorities between marriage and studies. And I end up with clg drop out due to failed in exam. I got into the depression because I was constantly a bright student. I succumb to my failures due to responsibilities at very young age. My mom in law was in hospital for serious issues during my exam period and I was asked to leave exam. My in laws and my husband were not against my education bt never helped me though. As a result my dreams ended up with a 3 years depression phase. So moral of my story is that girls get quality education get a job first make ur priority first nd then Think about marriage 😢😢

If it is a girl child the concequences may turn to more worse if immature couple parents listen to age old conservative thinking of "Girl child is burden" if they dont even can make their own decisions of protecting and providing their child. It mentally may lead to divirse,extramarital affairs,no stable emotional,economical and peacefull family life. What if one of the parent dies. Who gonna take care of that new born child. And this society will harrasss and hurt and make the lives of that young bride/bride groom and new born life a mess and hell. So when you look at all these. A proper education with maturity and girls knowing all the rights and required laws to protect themselves in any circumstance must be known and this decisions gives time to aquire all these. Will give oppurtunity for women to have a degree that makes her independent,confident enough to stand for herself for any injustice to her and can make her life and her husband,family and kids life more meaningfull and happy. I agree but correction is they have to formulate a law against martial rape but there are loopholes in the consent thing. First it's not possible for a couple to have a record of consent before being physical everytime. Also such law can be used in inappropriate way too just to frame your partner. Hence for consent their should be a way to be found which can tackle both of these problems. I again say I strongly condemned marital rape and I believe it's equal to any other rape but marriage is something that makes justice delivering process complicated here. We have to found a solid ways. While almost every time a women is a victim but consent thing can increase the number of men victims of false accusations too. Major focus should be on 'financial stability' for a girl . I still believe 21 years is less it has to be increased to 25 at that age girls can be financially independent and is capable of taking decision to marry after being financially stable. Most important thing which is necessary while taking marriage decison is 'free consent'. Marriage by force should be void . They should ban those marriages where free consent is not there be it any age . Marriage decison should be taken by those individuals and not some family members deciding for them and then forcing the person to marry. If a person is 18 years and he/she wants to marry it has to be their own choice and not by any force . Child marriages has to be completely banned because a person below 18 years of age is not capable of deciding such a big decision like marriage. Sadly in some parts of India child marriages is still followed and evn when a girls becomes 18 years of age family members tend to take decisions for their marriage . Individual choice and financial stability should be prioritised first.

Everyone is talking about the legal age of marriage, what about the fulfilment of biological (sexual desire) of teenagers? In west they get it quite easily, in India they have to wait till they reach 30's. It is one of the major cause of depression in youths. I think that the law should be so that, marriage be allowed at the age of 16, but no babies till the girl is 21. I personally feel govt. Restrictions were at 18 then in many places people were marrying their daughter and girls as soon as they turned 18. And so if we assume girls start their education when they turn 5 or 6 then we can see girls were getting married as soon as they pass out 12 hence that was taking toll on their education (higher studies) and everyone should have that right so it is fair and right to move that to 21 yrs so at least they can pursue and continue their graduation and try to follow their dreams rather than being just a groom and be a housemaker. On an avg girls get married at 22-24 and boys get married around 24-27 so there is nothing wrong but looks like it's a progressive steps towards women empowerment by increase their minimum marriage age to 21.

A firm law on marriage age limit and child-marriage prohibition must be made and implemented. I've seen many cases where girls who could have done very well in their life but succumbed to the societal and family pressure. Parents should also be made aware of these things specially in rural areas. As I belong to one where not only the elders but youngsters also still have these notions if they don't get their girls married and young age they would go doing things that would defame their family respect and there is no such things for their boys. Girls should also come forth firmly to oppose these ill practices and speak up for themselves which they can do surely if backed up by a firm law and well implemented administrative set-up.
