Curious question by an atheist: Do marriages outside the church count? If I wait to have sex only after marriage and marry legally with a woman, and then have children with her, but we're both atheists that were never baptized, when we die are we going to be judged only for our unbelief or for fornication too?
@CatholicCentralVideos3 жыл бұрын
Hi Marco. In theory, atheists usually don’t express concern over what will happen to them after they die because no God means no afterlife! But to answer your question, God will judge each of us - believer or atheist - with perfect justice and perfect mercy. As Catholics we have chosen to face that mystery with hope rather than anxiety. To address the difference between secular marriage and what Catholics call a “Sacramental Marriage,” we believe that all marriages are valid and do not take issue with the fact that you may have been married by Protestant minister, Rabbi, or Justice of the Peace. This episode addresses the idea of marriage as Sacrament. Catholics believe that marriage in the Church is something a little more than other marriages: you enter a covenantal relationship with your spouse - two become one - and the love you model for each other models the love that God has for each of us. That’s why the Church requires so much preparation for marriage, to make sure the couple fully understands the uniqueness of the vocation they’ve been called to. But we have no problem with other forms of marriage. Regarding children, your question reflects old theology and should never have had a place in our Church. A child is an individual and is not responsible for the “sins” of their parents. As for judgement, Pope Francis was asked by a young person if his father was in hell because the dad was an atheist. The pope’s answer was that God can recognize goodness and people of good will who follow their conscience with integrity. Vatican II affirms that one can do the works of Christ without ever knowing Christ. So judgement is not up to us, the priest in your area, the pope, or anyone else. Judgement is by God and God alone.

Hi @mrs.paulschmetz3912, we are not sure what you are saying, but please know that an annulment does not declare that there never was a marriage or a relationship. It is declaration that a marriage was not sacramental.

Just to clarify, consecrated virgins don’t make a vow of chastity, or any vow. They’re consecrated as virgins by the Church.
@CatholicCentralVideos2 жыл бұрын
Hi JewelBlueIbanez , we are not sure if you are making this statement from a personal experience or if it is something you heard, but in paragraph seventeen in the “Rite of Consecration to a Life of Virginity for Women Living in the World”, the candidates are asked three questions, to which they are supposed to reply “I am”. Those questions are: 1. Are you resolved to persevere to the end of you days in the holy state of virginity and in the service of God and his Church? 2. Are you so resolved to follow Christ in the spirit of the Gospel that your whole life may be a faithful witness to God’s love and a convincing sign of the kingdom of heaven? 3. Are you resolved to accept solemn consecration as a bride of our Lord Jesus Christ, the Son of God? Answering “I am” to these three questions would be vows. So... if you are already married, then you get married to a another person, would that be cheering?
@CatholicCentralVideos2 жыл бұрын
Hi Mara. We imagine that you meant “cheating” and it would not only be considered cheating but also illegal. At this point in history, bigamy is a rarity outside Muslim cultures, a few breakaway Mormon cults, and in rural areas of Tibet where the practice of polyandry is widespread - one woman with several husbands. Otherwise, marriage arrangements of multiple spouses are not only frowned upon by most religions, it is also against the law in all 50 states of the U.S. If you are referring to a married person who gets a divorce and remarries, then we would suggest you watch the episode for an explanation.

I’m here seeking one simple answer… I don’t know where to find it if you don’t know please guide me to where I could find what I need. I’m married with children to someone that believes there’s a God but doesn’t care to get married by church (I yearn for the Eucharist and receiving the communion) he feels you just need to be grateful. I feel he diminishes my feelings and needs because he could care less about that sacrament. Both our families are “Catholic” meaning we try but are not perfect. I feel we shouldn’t be together because that’s so important to me but he doesn’t under that. I want to go confess , receive gods blessing in marriage and receive communion but I can’t because he won’t confess and we haven’t married by church. What am I to do? It’s affecting my relationship. It’s like an obese couple but one decides to go on a diet and workout and seek healthier choices but the other stays in their gluttony ways. How does that relationship work? What am I to do???
@CatholicCentralVideos2 жыл бұрын
Dear Brenda, your situation is a tough one and we pray for peace for you and your husband. We would urge you to talk to a trusted priest, deacon, or spiritual director. We also feel you might want to consider counseling. There could well be underlying issues, not necessarily related to religion, that are influencing your husband’s refusal to compromise. Convalidating an existing marriage in the Church should not be an overwhelmingly complex process. Once completed, your husband will still be free to choose whether or not to attend Mass or even practice his faith at all. But just as in your husband's case there may be issues on your side as well, not yet explored and again not necessarily religious, and these may already be inclining you toward separation. Marriage is never a static thing, it’s always growing and changing. Each partner must grow and change with it even as they grow and change as individuals, while never losing sight of each other. In the meantime, there is nothing that says you cannot receive the sacrament of Reconciliation just because your husband chooses not to participate. It may be a personal avenue to peace and clarity for you and you should go. Faith should not bring stress to your marriage; it should bring strength. Right now, you see something in the Catholic faith that your husband does not, so live your life as a loving wife and a Catholic - do not judge him for not practicing the faith - and pray for your husband. Go to Church and get a blessing at Communion. In the end, it’s important to remember that our spirituality is embedded in the totality of our emotional life, and you cannot force religion on someone without taking into account that it will generally have the opposite of the intended effect. We will be praying with you and for you.

Did little to explain and stress exactly what marriage is about in the sense of the Catholic Faith or mentioning scriptures. Very lame and clumsy presentation! Why don't you put it across more strongly so that it stands out better versus societies new norms? Please!
@CatholicCentralVideos Жыл бұрын
Hi Seppe, thank you for expressing your concerns about the episode. The video might have worked better for you if we had titled it "Matrimony," since it was part of our series on the Sacraments. Our purpose therefore was to focus on the requirements for a marriage to be sacramentally valid in the Catholic Church, and point out how these requirements are in many cases quite different from conceptions of marriage found outside the Church. Our focus is the ‘why’ behind the theology in plain language so that we can make the teachings of the Church accessible to as many people as possible within the brief format of our series. What you appear to be seeking is a broader discussion of Catholic marriage within the changing landscape of our culture as well as the interpersonal challenges of a sacramental marriage itself, often whimsically described as a vocation requiring its participants to become saints. As we explained, these issues lie outside our specific intent, but our studio, Family Theater Productions, is currently at work on an entire series devoted to Catholic marriage called “I do…and I Still Do” that will present Catholic couples discussing what it takes to stay married. It will be available in January on our parent company’s KZbin channel KZbin.com/@FamilyTheaterProductions. Stay tuned, and thank you again for joining the conversation.
