I am sorry, both of you missed the underlying instinctive factor behind marriage which is a terrible relationship; two individuals get on each other's nerves all their lives and limit their strong natural desire for polygamy besides so many other irritating nuisances. However, the institution of marriage has survived all odds for thousands of years mainly because of our very strong desire to reproduce to escape death which gives us the satisfaction of leaving our genes behind. And to ensure paternity, marriage is the only relationship. Many animals also are monogamous for this reason.
