Just a fun fact: You mentioned "Marriage Italian Style" being the second highest grossing Italian film of 1964, behind "A Fistful of Dollars" directed by Sergio Leone. Well, Leone was De Sica's Assistant Director during the making of "The Bicycle Thief". So it has kind of a poetic irony of "the student becomes the master". P.S. You can actually see Leone in "The Bicycle Thief". He is one of the young priests.

Great ep as always! The shrugging priest had me cracking up-- it's such a Napolitan scene to me. So is the squirts scene. (Nice touch with the editing there, that was a highlight for me, it was great). You had some solid comedy moments considering how difficult it is to find light in parts of this film, haha, and I'm highly impressed with the gesticulations Matt did-- as an Italian consider me thoroughly offended. (I'm kidding of course). A couple of thoughts about the tone... If you look at Filumena Marturano, and other plays by Eduardo De Filippo, it was a common theme in his works to have this comedy/tragedy thing going on all the time. While the De Sica film differs in plot somewhat, I feel he borrowed that kind of "comedy in the foreground, tragedy in the background" feel that De Filippo is famous for. He also used to get really really heavy in his plays at times. Naples was (and still is at times-- there's a reason my parents left in the 80s) pretty harsh. It's an amazing and beautiful place but flawed, and a lot of De Filippo's stuff touches on that. I'm a little familiar with Italian Commedia, because of my heritage and also my Dad in particular was a greatly enamored of his place of birth and the culture of Napoli and so my upbringing was steeped in it. My parents both briefly acted in amateur plays here in Australia too, doing many of De Filippo's works, (and others) for a number of years. My Dad died when I was young, and my mom retired from the theater recently, but I'm lucky enough to have watched various plays growing up-- I used to help them both rehearse their lines all the time over the years. www.italiantheatre.org/plays/ has the works they participated in. I was too young to watch Filumena Marturano but my mother was the lead in 'Bene Mio E Core Mio' which is another of De Filippo's plays with a feisty female lead. (My Dad was in Napoli Millionara and Caviale E Lenticchie). If you liked this you should see if you can find some of De Filippo's work-- Napoli Milionara/Street Side Story is especially good, though a lot of his films are basically filmed plays more than anything. Anyway kudos on a great episode, I know you guys are hesitant to put subbed movies on the show because of popularity but I for one really appreciate it.

Awesome. A Vittorio De Sica movie. I hope in 2021 the show does some more movies by classic directors who haven't previously been featured on the show. In case you want to know some directors who've never had a movie featured on Welcome to the Basement include Steven Spielberg, Martin Scorsese, Spike Lee, John Cassavetes, Billy Wilder, Jean Renoir, Francis Ford Coppola, Francois Truffaut, Fritz Lang, Woody Allen, Luis Bunuel, and Ernst Lubitsch. I think it would be cool if some of their movies appeared on the show.

I don't think Christopher Plummer looked sinister as Captain Von Trapp... he was my first crush as a child! Kind of weird I guess, but I know several other women who had the same experience, surprisingly. And yes, we were all very sad when he died. But of course he lived a great, long life.
