Thanks for your reaction. Elvis was born on January 8, 1935 in Tupelo, Mississippi, in a 2 room shack of a house his dad built with money he borrowed from his boss. That's how dirt poor they were. He was one half of identical twins; the other boy - Jesse Garon - was stillborn. They were so poor, that Jesse Garon was buried in a shoebox in an unmarked grave. At Graceland they have a plaque with his name on it in his memory. Elvis always got along with the black community and learned a lot about music from his friends of color. Also, according to the one drop rule, Elvis would not be considered white, since he has Cherokee ancestors on both the Smith (his mother) and the Presley (his father) sides of the family. His paternal grandfather, Jesse Dunning Presley, was not happy that his two sons, Elvis' father Vernon and his brother Vester, married two sisters, Gladys and Clettes who were known to have Cherokee blood in their family tree. J.D. Presley was quite the racist a-hole, often drunk and a philandering husband to Minnie Mae (they were actually separated long before they finally divorced in 1954) who was always competing with his sons Vester and Vernon and who was known to abuse his kids when drunk. J.D. was was publicly against race mixing and was in denial about the Cherokee blood in his own family tree. It was more publicly known that the Smith family had Native blood in their family tree, so when both his sons fell for 2 Smith sisters and Vernon, on top of that, was still a minor at 17 when he eloped with Gladys who was 4 years older than him, Jesse was totally pissed off. As a child, Elvis already had many friends in the black community at the time his family was one of 4 "white" families that lived in the predominantly black neighborhood The Hill, just across from Shake Rag. His childhood friend Sam Bell said that some of the (black) kids in that neighborhood had lighter skin than Elvis (kzbin.info/www/bejne/gqOpdKyEgtuNjc0). One of Elvis' bodyguards once said that he thought it was a miracle Elvis got into Humes High School in Memphis, because it was "lily white". Elvis wanted to be more open about his Native ancestry, but his manager "colonel" Tom Parker (real name Andreas van Kuijk) was against it because he was afraid it might cost Elvis fans (and himself money). They did have Elvis play characters in his movies though where he had Native American blood (Flaming Star, G.I. Blues, Stay Away Joe). Once Elvis had his own (apprentice) job learning to be an electrician, he saved up his money and bought his clothes in the same style that many of his friends of color wore. He was called a (forgive me, just stating facts here) "n-lover" and got beaten up several times too. Later, when he was an established star, he would not perform at places where the members of color of his back-up band/orchestra weren't allowed.

This was a cover song. Many artists recorded it. In fact Jim Nabors has a beautiful version that showcases his own amazing vocals. But imho, the best version I've ever heard was this one. Elvis' covers are almost always better, and in very few cases at least as good as the original because he put so much passion and emotion into his music that touched people on a deep level. Sorry i failed to mention that the last note -- specifically on Unchained Melody -- was actually done by tenor Sherrill (Shaun) Nielsen who did that last high falsetto note. Good as Elvis was, at that point in his life he just couldn't manage that ending. During Elvis' life, Nielsen provided backup singing in some concerts and in the studio, including work on 1975's Elvis Today album.

So what was Elvis' actual contribution to music? It was specifically love, timing, environment and distribution. Ok so Rock music is primarily made up of several strains of Country music (all invented by white artists), Gospel (Christian music was originally invented by Roman choirs before the birth of Christ. ) and the Blues (invented by black artists). Lets add to that the legendary song writers (such as Leiber and Stoller). Then the instruments which were made in Italy, Germany, Africa, China and the Middle East among others. That is where rock and roll sprang from. The TRUTH is that Rock music is NOT BLACK MUSIC. It is YOUNG PEOPLE MUSIC. It was created by YOUNG PEOPLE of multiple races for YOUNG PEOPLE in an era of YOUTH REVOLUTION. Rock music was the first music genre of the modern age that was CREATED FOR AN AGE GROUP and NOT A RACE of people. It was created for a MOVEMENT, the YOUTH REVOLUTION of the 1950s. Elvis is the only musician ever to be inducted into the Gospel, Blues, Country and Rock & Roll Halls of Fame. He was considered top shelf in each of the genres that were considered the ingredients of Rock and Roll. Elvis was different, and his perspective was different than most white people of his day, especially among other whites in the South. Elvis grew up in the poorest parts of the South during the Great Depression and Segregation. And he understood the very lowest depths of poverty. Only 4 white families on his block, he lived and played with black children while living in a 1 room shotgun shack with NO running WATER and NO ELECTRICITY. His father built the home with a borrowed $150, then lost it because they couldn't afford to pay it back. How poor was Elvis? The Presleys were so poor that they couldn't afford a coffin when Elvis' twin brother Jesse Garon Presley was born stillborn, so Jesse had to be buried in a shoebox. Elvis was uniquely born at a time and place, Tupelo (SHAKERAG) AND Memphis (BEALE STREET) when so much new music and dance and social upheaval were happening. And So MUCH DIVISION and HATE if you were poor and/or black. Elvis grew up in the youth revolution AND the civil rights movement AND SUPPORTED BOTH movements starting and a young child. Elvis was the first big white star to pay royalties to black songwriters THAT ASKED ELVIS to sing and re-arrange their songs and vice versa. Elvis created A WHOLE NEW STYLE AND SOUND that was VERY CREATIVE.... by merging GOSPEL, R&B, Pop music, Rockabilly and Country. Rock was a MERGING OF CULTURES and GENRES. Every young person in the 50s was yearning for a new sound and Elvis' style was a FIRST, and he merged everything together the BEST for the young people. Elvis sang, arranged, produced, danced, acted, and had a God crafted voice that was entirely UNIQUE and sought after. Elvis was already honing his voice and skills in the 1940s in the church scene long before Little Richard or Chuck Berry ever cut a single record. Elvis was trained by black musicians in black churches and white musicians in white churches in the 1940s. Rev W Herbert Brewster of the East Trigg Baptist Church asked Elvis to join in 1948 when he was 13, after Elvis and his family moved to Memphis. They were jamming before and during the legendary black musicians got heard. He was able to merge music genres and black and white culture better than anyone and created the sound and stage performance of Rock and Roll. AND as soon as ELVIS started to make money -- THEY ALL MADE MONEY! Little Richard talked about this: "He sung my Tootie Fruti & by him singing it, made it bigger & made ME bigger" And then he said: “I thank God for Elvis Presley. I thank the Lord for sending Elvis to open the door so I could walk down the road...”- Little Richard Elvis WAS the biggest part of the change from the old style of music to Rock and Roll. He absolutely was an ACTUAL PIONEER of the modern sounds and stage presentations that we know today. He co-invented Rock and Roll with Little Richard and Fats Domino and Chuck Berry and others. He WAS a pioneer. Its not culture appropriation / culture vulture when you are a pioneer of a sound. Elvis never stole a song. He credited everyone, ensuring all songwriters were listed next to every song on each album. No exceptions. Elvis was friends with all the legends.. B.B. King, Otis Blackwell, Little Richard, Chuck Berry, Fats Domino, Roy Hamilton and many more. You can't STEAL "COOL" You cant steal "RHYTHM". You cant steal "SOUL". You can't STEAL "HOW TO DANCE". You can't steal "HOW TO SAAANG". You either HAVE THESE SKILLS, or you do NOT. ELVIS THE ARRANGER: Elvis was ABLE TO MERGE MUSIC AND CULTURE better than any one else alive at the time. Elvis didn't only help the black community of artists, that man tore down walls of racism for everyone. He stood up and did it a man's way. He was born into poverty, but this is not his story. He lost his mother who he worshiped when he was drafted into the Army in 1958, he did lose his twin brother who was stillborn at their birth. His mother said he had to live for both of them', Elvis father went to prison for almost a year for altering a check. He and his mother had it tough and lived in a black ghetto until his father was able to find work in Memphis when he was a teen. He hung out on Beale Street where all the black artist and jazz singers sang. He was the only white kid that did that. He often went to a black church because he loved the music there. He loved everybody, and was so generous. You need to react to "Elvis Presley A Generous Heart" or "Elvis Presley King of Kindness", he gave away almost as much as he made. When watching local news at his home at Graceland he saw a woman with no legs that her husband had made her a make shift way to get around from a wood crate and some skates nailed to the bottom. He went to her home with a new state of the arts Electric Wheelchair, she cried and thanked him. If a black man had done what Elvis's dad did, this has to possible outcomes. 1. he would still be in jail and 2. he would have got the death penalty. they did not live in a black ghetto, grow up and face reality you just might like it. For me, the best part of this clip was their wee boy cuddling his dad while he was sleeping. Took me right back to when my own infant sons would cling to me whilst asleep, knowing that they were in safe hands. They preferred doing so with their mum,though 'cause no man can make milk!

HIS culture was a cocktail of all ... i in a time of racial segregation, he broke down the barriers ... all over the world and he financed MLK 's Civil rights movement. Elvis was a twin and his brother died at birth. His mother didn’t die but she suffered depression his whole life. They were extremely poor and lived in a two room home in Tupelo, Mississippi. Elvis’s wife did leave him after five years of marriage and took his daughter Lisa Marie. There is always some truth in his songs

When he was about 2 or 3, he would run up and sing with the "all black" choir. Although he is the King of Rock and Roll, he only won 4 Grammys...All of them were for his Gospel Albums. What does that say about him? He was very religious and took his Bible with him everywhere. He studies ALL religions, which was a huge part of his personal life.
