"The Valley" is a comfortable place that many separated spouses live in for a time. There is some communication, but not a lot. There aren't real responsibilities being placed on their shoulders in terms of your relationship yet. There is contact, but your relationship isn't moving forward in any way. It is okay for your spouse to be in the valley for a time, but there is a point when change must be made. You are the one that can actually end the valley period. You can bring forth boundaries (these are some things that cannot occur or there will be consequences) and criteria (something they must do for a positive consequence, and if it's not done there will be a negative consequence). Disrupting the valley may end your relationship and you have to be prepared for that, but it will finally get you out of that middle ground.
