David's friend did what a friend is supposed to do which is defend David BUT ... Having a house in the city is very different from having a house outside of the city. It's not a direct comparison. After escaping a "humble beginning", Michelle wants to be in the city and maybe her job is in the city. Also just because she is renting doesn't mean that she isn't also saving. That friend has no idea how much money Michelle makes so who is to say she is losing? Sometimes renting, especially if it's short term, is better. David is living at home and seemingly has nothing to show for it. He has not mentioned that he has down payment money and he works multiple jobs. Also, basement aside, David presents himself in a very sloppy way from his appearance to the way he keeps his home, to smoking despite his mother being a cancer survivor (!), to the way he can come back from the gym and sit his sweaty self on the couch for a conversation with no hesitation or thought of a shower. Living at home just underlines the immaturity.
