Lea Garofalo, 35. She went to the police with details of the numerous crimes of her Mafioso husband, Carlo Cosco. In revenge, Cosco kidnapped and murdered her before dissolving her body in acid.
Maria Concetta Cacciola, 31. Another ‘Ndrangheta wife. In August 2010, she drank a bottle of acid after also speaking to the police about the crimes of the mob family she had tried, but failed, to escape. Her death remains clouded in mystery.
Then there’s Cacciola’s cousin, Giuseppina Pesce, the daughter of clan boss Salvatore Pesce. She also became a state witness, even helping to put some of her family members behind bars.
By rebelling against their clan, these women dealt a severe blow to organised crime. For in the ‘Ndrangheta, the largest and most feared of the Italian mafias, women never betray their families. Blood ties and ancestral ties still hold tight. And - as the film reveals - the actions of Lea, Maria Concetta and Giuseppina have set a dangerous precedent…..

In Japan we have Yakuza. They don't involve civilians in the fighting, unless they mess about with them. The Police Force and the civil community gather to eliminate the Yakuza activities. The awareness and motivation to cut them off from the sixuety isaccelerating there. However, sometimes Yakuza are faster than the government to help the needy with good will. Probably in Japan Yakuza is a necessary social vice.

Lea’s story reminds me Rita Atria’s story, Rita has committed suicidal when judge Borsellino’s died in a bombing attack from mafia. Borsellino was the last chance of protection and new life for the young Rita that she was guilty to be related with the most important Sicilian mafia family, she was pure, honest, with a big heart and against her evil family. She went to the DIA and she started to collaborate with police, it was her sentence for life by mafia. She was under protection when Borsellino died, she felt loose and she choose to die because without Borsellino in her side it means the end. Yes, and as someone who has personal indirect experience with the Mafia, I can tell everyone they ARE everywhere. They are low life vicious, and will destroy or kill someone tied to you to punish YOU, even though that person had zero to do with them. They do NOT keep it all in the family. The fixation with the Sopranos, and the Godfather by many is literally stupid and ignorant. Due to personal experience, I have zero to do with Italians, and make no apologies for it. The tentacles of organized crime must never be underestimated. Am I afraid, no. The FBI took my case. But I'm not stupid either. The mob is treated and viewed as the corrupt, evil, sleazy low life's they really are. And most if not all Italians in businesses are tied to them. You bet I'm sweeping them all into the same rubbish pile. Take no chances.

It's the same twisted thinking as that of children brought up in an abusive family, women who stay in abusive relationships, people of ALL kinds who stay in abusive cults year after year. If you're constantly told that black is white, evil is good and up is down, you're going to think that fear is respect and that it's the best that you can hope to receive from anyone. Probably best not to sit in judgement too much on those who get caught up in these things because given slightly different circumstances, each of us could fall into this twisted thinking. But we can recognise the immense moral and physical courage of those like Lea who stand up against it, whatever the cost. BTW karma isn't a thing. There's one chance at life, one death and one day of judgement before our maker, which is much more terrifying than any "karma"

When I was in Calabria some years ago, I was eating in a restaurant and overheard a family sitting next to me and making fun of the mafia. A man from another table close to mine, stood up, walked to the table of the family next to me a said a couple of words. The atmosphere in the restaurant became thick in a second or two. Total silence took over. The father of the family stood up, threw a 100€ bill on the table and left with his family in a hurry. The man who had whispered some words in the ear of the father nodded at me and I nodded back, finished my meal and left too after nodding again. I felt safe, but at the same time understood very well that the family had crossed a line in a region they should never have done so.

In the ndrangheta rules are taken extremely serious. Your family, your blood and flash, are secondary to the ndrangheta. When you join ndrangheta it becomes your family, and you are binded by a pact of respect, crime and death, even if it comes to kill a member of your own family.

@@mad3m6n I mean I get that, she broke the code and that comes with a known consequence, but did they really have to use acid to kill her?? To use acid on one's own child or niece or cousin etc. that just seems unnecessarily brutal, I can think of few worse, more painful deaths than being forced to drink acid. I don't see why they couldn't have just shot her dead like they did the other woman who broke the code of silence, now that situation...as unfortunate as it was, I understand it...because she did break a rule that she knew came w/ a death sentence and thus it had to be carried out otherwise it couldve made the family look weak or make others think of doing the same & so they went on and shot her dead, got rid of her, thus proving that they weren't weak & also sending a message to any other potential snitches, but they did so in a professional manner like it was all part of the life and hers had to end but it didn't seem especially cruel. Killing the other woman who snitched with acid, that I dont understand because now you're just torturing another human-being & blood family at that, causing them unimaginable suffering, and for no real reason other than the sake of being brutal bcz if it was just about family honor then they easily couldve just shot her dead real quick and bang boom, back to business as usual. Brutality for brutalities sake isn't good for businesses of any sort.

Mafia exist where the government is dysfunctional. People often forget that Italian police, army, and government were extremely corrupt through most of history. Even today there's a ton of corruption in Italian politics. All mafias, Italian, American, Mexican, form in vacuums where the official government is either not doing its job or breaking the trust of the people. Many parts of Italy and Mexico got their first school when criminals built it. This is why it takes generations for governments to rebuild trust with their people.

There are several different mafias in Italy, but the Ndrangheta are hands down the most violent, and operate more like a cartel than a traditional mafia family. There are police, a few prosecutors, and a judge who have all been under 247 armed police protection for many years....25 years straight for one of the prosecutors and over a decade for the rest involved in this one particular case that I was following where they were actually trying to hold powerful Ndrangheta members to account, and so ofc after the brazen murders of politicians, lawyers, and cops in the past who had the audacity to speak out against, or investigate this gang, serious protection measures were put in place for the lawyers who continue(d) the fight & the judge who was to hear the case but I just can't imagine being under police protection for even 1 year, let alone 25. Then again I am American and both personally and as a country, I have learned that the majority of our cops aren't on the job to protect and serve but instead to harass, steal, extort, etc. and for some to be able to bully & murder w/ 0 consequences so they damn sure wouldn't make me feel safer, I guess it's good that we don't have the Ndrangheta in SWFL and I haven't nor would ever piss off any local businessmen from south of the border.

Funny how those women come out such innocent angels, forced to live such against their will, i just wonder how much wrongs these women had done towards other women by abusing their status To Each pot its lid

@@oldishandwoke-ish1181 protestants mainly, also other similar sects that have the attitude "i know better than the people that followed the same doctrine for 2000 years". even though the catholic church today has many internal problems, i still respect the history of it. catholic/orthodox are following the doctrine.

@@ISCARI0T You chose the most apt name- Judas Iscariot. Your father the devil is using you like your namesake. Only a satanist would respect a doctrine that's filled with greed, blasphemy, delusions of grandeur and heresy. Do you miss the days when your church of Satan told people they could earn their way to heaven by paying for indulgences, christenings, relics, pilgrimages etc? The only reason anyone has a Bible in their language is due to Protestants. I don't expect a satanist would appreciate how selfless believers like William Tyndale were hunted down and killed for translating the Bible. Is this the history you respect? Do you want to go back to the time when Bibles had to be smuggled across the border? You probably don't even know what a Bible looks like because you follow the pope instead of the Lord Jesus. Did you applaud Satan's representative(pope Francis) when he said Christians should never share the Gospel with unbelievers or when he approved homosexual civil unions? Which internal problems were you referring to? Your pedo priests or nun raping priests?
