This German made Dolmar PS420 chainsaw was dropped off and the customer said it will not start!
Dolmar was bought out by Makita in the 90's.
Makita has now exited the gas market and Dolmar chainsaws are no longer in production.
Come with me, and let's find out why this thing won't start!
Grab a fresh coffee, we have work to do!
If you enjoy watching me diagnose and repair chainsaws, I have many videos that you may enjoy until my next upload! Click here : • Stihl Chainsaw Repair ...
I really appreciate you being here! THANK YOU for all of the kind words and your support!

Happy Thursday! Please!! LIKE this video and leave me a comment (or two or three!) below! I LOVE reading all of your comments! Here is a story about a little German made Dolmar PS-420 chainsaw that refuses to start for it's owner. Let's see if we can help this little saw get back to work. Also, I just saved 12 beat up Stihl saws from getting parted out - they just arrived! I will show you them next video! Thanks so much for watching! Don't forget to LIKE, and leave a comment - I am down in the comment section right now looking for you!

I lived in Florida for almost 3 years. It was a long time ago and let us say that I am glad that I live in Maryland. I don't have to worry about hurricanes here. I think about half of my family members are north of Maryland, a few are in Maryland, and roughly half my family members are in Florida. I miss all my out-of-state family members. The ones living in Florida suffer from hurricane strikes each year. Given the choice of facing cold weather or facing a hurricane, I will take the cold weather choice every time. Now that I've said all that....I agree that Florida is interesting for either vacations or cruises...as long as you can pay for it all, of course.

Hello Yes Dolmar. Here in Germany you saw them often. Most of the time used from older Guys who cam from these years where ther where made.I always heard good things about them. I never owned one unfortunately. Now the time is gone for these saws, but you can get one used for about 200-250 Euro, which is pretty the same in US-Dollar. Thank you for the revival, i liked it. 😍

I saw firewood with a triplet of Dolmar saws; a 420, a 510, and a 6100 and love them. I cut from October to April, mostly oak, taking the standing dead down. Felling and bucking with the 6100, limbing and cleaning up with the 420. The 510 mostly sits on the shelf now. I've been sawing with these for over 10 years, and the only problem I ever encountered is a lost fuel cap, that was certainly my fault. I was anxious to see you take the 420 apart, hoping to learn anything I should be doing. Thanks for including one, though I am very cautious of the fuel, the filters, the bar and chain. I enjoy your channel, thanks.

What??? You've never heard of Dolmar? Emil Lerp invented the world's first gas-powered chainsaw in 1927. Andreas Stihl is considered the true inventor of the chainsaw itself, but his was electric, powered by a generator at the end of a long cable. Dolmar has been building great saws for almost a hundred years. But Makita bought them in 1991 and is retiring the name, so you won't see them much longer.

Thank you for posting this excellent video. Dolmar is an unfamiliar brand for me, but then using chainsaws is an unfamiliar activity for me. I noticed the vertical marks on the cylinder wall as well. Thank you for teaching me that if there is water in the gas, it can freeze up and affect the carburetor. I've seen James Condon do so many carburetor disassemblies and cleanings that I keep expecting you to say "I will put this in my ultrasonic for 5 or 10 minutes" or something similar. I guess Walbro carburetors are used in a lot of chainsaw brands. Thank you very much for showing the Dolmar saw, and for letting us know you are a former Dolmar dealer, too. By the way I get the sense you really like the curburetor stand from Joe a lot 🙂

The summer's down there were hot and most of the time there is no rain, after we were there 4 years moved to a house with property and had an inground pool put in. If we got overheated we got in the pool. My wife was still working and hated the heat, so we bought a place out away from everyone with land and for us it's great. Now I'm not crazy about when the temperature goes below 30 but it's okay too. Today in north Fort Myers it's 58 degrees. I've seen it colder than that.

A few years ago I managed to lose the air filter and its cover in a very dense bush area. I found the cover but not the filter. The air filter at Dolmar's Finnish importer was quite expensive, approx. 30 euros/US dollars. Well, the main thing is that the importer found one right away on the counter. After that, I always made sure that the cover was properly closed. Dolmar's engine runs really smoothly. If you put a Stihl saw on the ground while it is running, it will move around. Dolmar, on the other hand, pretty much stays put. After the PS-420 C model (2.0kW), Dolmar introduced the SC model, where the engine power was increased to 2.2kW. The last SC-420 saws were made in China instead of Germany if the info I received was correct. I bought my Dolmar 420 in 2011 and I really like it. It seems to have good torque for a 42cc saw. Parts are cheap, last year I bought a new Dolmar 13 inch bar for 13 euros/U.S dollars and Makita .325, 56, 1,3mm chains were 5 euros a piece on sale. Well, I bought quite a many chains as they are quality stuff.

I have a PS421 that I bought used almost NOS. It had a cat in the muffler but it was very easy to open up and allow it to escape. The high jet is filled with Epoxy but the saw operates within rpm parameters. I am now curious to see if my saw has open transfer ports like this one. I understand Dolmar technicians assembled each saw start to finish unlike assembly line fashion. I was told by a former dealer here that back in the day Dolmar would cast cylinders for Husqvarna as well. The saw named after the mountain in Thüringia whose forests the prototype units were tested in nearly a century ago. 👍

I remember those epoxied H jets - those were not a great idea - I found many PS5100s needed a slight tweak richer from what they were set at . The later 5105s used a D shaped I believe H jet which made things better .

@ A used 5105 was the first pro saw I purchased. I sent that muffler away to let the cat out and the guy did a great job on it. It will pull a 20” .325 bar better than my 550xpg. My guess is Makita was trying to pass emission regulations with cats and tamper resistance screws and attempted newer tech with the 6100 but just couldn’t compete. Their 60-80cc saws were top notch.

Great video! Can't wait to see the 660. I use a clone 660 to mill lumber here on my property. A couple years back I used a 42 inch bar on the clone to mill a 36 inch oak stump into boards.

My very first experience was 40 years ago as a teenager with my father in our small forest with a second-hand Dolmar saw. These are not good memories. The chain regularly came loose, it started badly and it kept flooding when I tried to start it. Back then, I obviously didn't know as much about saws as I do today. Today, I could help myself better. Maybe it's because I only work with Stihl products these days... Thank you for your great videos.

Outstanding job. I enjoy watching you work on different models of chainsaws. They are so interesting. I have an Sthil chainsaw. Love it. But I’m so interested in other types.

Great repair Erica ,it’s a wonder that saw even started with those old crusty carb parts. Do you tell customers to dump out the old stinky, watery, cloudy fuel to prevent the same poor starting condition all over again.
