Hi Erica. After seeing so many saws get trashed mainly due to user neglect or lack of basic how to knowledge, it would be a great idea for saw rookies to take some kind of maintenance crash course. I don’t know if a lot of those are offered but the University of Utube certainly does offer a lot of material at our finger tips. Most new owners probably don’t understand that there is a bit more to looking after a saw than many other home owner tools such as a lawnmower, although fuel issues certainly are universal. Not only is not knowing the basics expensive, it absolutely is inconvenient for the user. Have fun…. Thanks for the U of U presentation. 🇨🇦

Just wanted to update you on the MS660 I inherited from my father in law! Pressure / vacuum testing revealed a bad crank seal on the clutch side. It wouldn't even bubble with soapy water, but I could hear the leak. Replaced that and it runs! Still need to do the flywheel side seal (I took your comment to heart about crank seals being like socks), and it's tuning up a bit funny right now -- but none the less a huge step in the right direction, that I wouldn't have been able to do without your videos. Will keep you posted as I make more progress :)

I've watched enough of your great videos to be confident that both saws would start within a few minutes of being in your care! Given how dangerous a chainsaw could be, it is hard to understand how people treat them. How do the owners not notice that the chain is on backwards when they try to cut wood?? Do you think it’s lazy or ignorance of proper maintenance? I really think it’s the later as we have studied for years what the proper maintenance of the little things because they have not been taught. People don’t read the pamphlet, and other than CYA safety rules there generally isn’t much that a casual owner would care about adding to their busy life. Where we are as a society, shop class is gone for now, so there’s an avenue for education lost. Lawn service has removed from many areas that need to learn while young. Everyone is running and can’t slow down for the “ menial tasks that you can pass along to someone skilled in the area. We are now specializing in a primary specialty and horse sense has become a rarity 😢. My observation from decades of research 😢

P.S. this saw is made with disposable trained consumers in mind. Price point shows that. Taint a 201T or a 66 or an 88. I believe that is how the marketing department handles it, and mostly it’s the same thing with most goods today 😢

Thank you for posting this excellent video. It reminds me of the time that my stepfather bought a pretty small Homelite brand saw and he used it to clear an entire house lot of trees. He was not an experienced chainsaw user, nor was he experienced in felling trees. At least one time he nearly got killed by a tree he was cutting. He did take care of that saw. I could see he liked servicing it. As far as I know he kept that saw for a long time. He passed away some years ago and I am thinking his son might have that saw today. I bet it still starts and runs fine. With the 2 neglected saws that you worked on, I would suggest that the older one become a parts saw. Or perhaps fix it with aftermarket parts rather than OEM.

Ive read on a UK Arb' forum that the Mityvac MV8500 are good and much cheaper than the one Erica uses. The Stihl one Erica uses may be bomb proof but its her bread and butter and gets used daily, but for someone that wants one for testing/maintaining their own small fleet of saws, sounds like the Mityvac are more than adequate. You'd probably get one for below $150 US on ebay.

I can’t believe the owner used that flimsy foam for an air filter. Our 170 was shipped with a white flimsy filter but when we purchased a replacement the filter after much aggravation it was much firmer with brown dense material on one side with white filter media on the flip side. Our dealer said our saw should have had the upgraded filter when shipped but must have been overlooked. We’ve had a lot less plug fouling after installing the upgraded filter. Just wish it would have shipped with the correct filter. Would have saved a lot of fouled plugs.

For over 30 years I haven’t had to do ANYTHING to this saw, it always starts but now it won’t I don’t know why “….. After stripping it down and removing Its weight in Drek, fixing several small issues. It starts right up. All I can say is that is one tough saw. chain on backwards and a DIY air filter from bit of old foam, they like a couple of bucks for a real one lol . I've had good experiences with the early 017 170 saws (earlier the better), 2001 model inherited from my father stihl going :-) Maintenance been good and seen seen hours and hours of work . The pre 2 mix versions tough saws far more capable than the purchase price would have you think (quality chain and good oiling is a must see decent cutting) and can last decades with sensible user care, as far as I go on repairs is hyway piston and new oem crank seals and possibly koyo bearings if needed and you likely doing an oil and fuel hose/filters too, unless seen some recent service work, Zama retailed carb diaphragm and gasket set cheap for these which keeps carb service viable cost. Got be good example worth the effort but you can pull engines out of these real quick if drill 1 hole in bottom plate of handle assembly to get access to the concealed engine mounting bolt . does take bit of time clean/prep everything for reassembly but i'm a sucker for fixing good example early to mid 2000's 017 170 018 180 models . Enjoy your hot coffee ...

Hello Erica, My observation is that the care given any equipment is related to their investment into it. If it didn't have a big impact on the wallet, who cares what happens to it. I admit I have learned much just watching your videos. We invested a Chunk on our saws. We got a little discount for the MS251C (CEB maybe) because it was purchased as gift for a fellow and he traded it without using it for a bigger chainsaw. So it had been run, had fuel in it, could not be sold as new persay. Still an investment with chaps and helmet for my wife. I have tried to care for them, but when it is needed for 2 minutes, they often didn't get cleaned. Or I was whooped after cutting and had no energy to clean/saw was hot, etc. I am learning. I have cleaned the 361CQ but believe it is leaking oil and I haven't run it yet since cleaning. Hmm. Anyway, I have a renewed appreciation for the saws and am trying to better care for them. We have used them a lot, but still don't want to consider replacing them unless absolutely necessary. The prices were spendy then and moreso now. Thank you for educating us on how simple care can go a long ways. I think in all the years with a chainsaw we may have chosen ethanol fuel early on or when there wasn't a good option to get non-ethanol. Otherwise we have used non-ethanol in all our small engines and they have run well for many years.

Hi and happy sunday to you all ! I think we all wants to have a good product we can rely on , easy to use and that just needs workshop maintenance but of course something can be broken . But if we continue to neglect the more scrap we are going to produce because it's to expensive to repaire. The risk of that will be that parts to this older machines will disappeare and Erica and others might getting tired of repairing the same neglected maschines that comes from the same owners. It's the money that rules today not the quality.🤗

I own the older saw that I bought in 2014. The fuel line is green in color. The screw that is on the recoil was missing and I bought a new one at the dealer and that cost $2.25. I went to put it in but it wouldn't go in, so I removed the recoil and found the screw broken off down inside. I tried different ways to remove it but it didn't work. So I took the new screw to the bench grinder and removed over half of the threads and put it in. It seems tight. I cleaned the recoil and I should be ashamed for not doing it before. The chainsaw has a lot of compression since it pulls hard. It runs good. This year I changed out the spark plug and fuel filter. The gas caps have been replaced several times because they leak. I spent a few dollars on ones from Amazon which I'm sending back because they would not begin to screw on. Live and learn. I put on an Oregon bar and chain after not getting the clutch housing on where the notch hits the oiler pin. Big mistake and a little costly. It's only money.

You probably won't see my comment seeing I'm a little late. I like your Echo compression tester, how does it work on the saws that have the small spark plug? I have found that the only way to get an accurate pressure test is to have the schrader valve at the very end of the hose and not use any attachments. I would like to find a compression tester with removable hose for each size spark plugs. Still enjoying your videos, looks like your having fun.!

hi, I love your videos, I have a problem with an ms 500i where the chain was running at idle as if the chainsaw had a slightly high idle speed, when removing the clutch I noticed that it wasn't in optimal conditions but not terrible either and I decided to replace it anyway with a new one, only the problem has diminished but the chain seems to turn slightly at idle as if the idle was high; could it be an air leak? maybe from an exhaust gasket

Good content. Thanks. I don't think that the home made air filter was gapped properly. I wonder what the chickens would have thought of it?

The older saw could be repurposed for the next YoYo competition. Would be nice to see Erica make it sleep, walk the baby etc.

You know the chain being backwards can be an honest mistake. I can remember asking my father how could he make such a mistake and he replied ive got alot on my mind son! 35 years later I hooked up some battery cables backwards and of course i've done it a million times, and my son informed me i put them on wrong. I couldnt belive id done it but i had. Geuss i had alot on my mind!

I’m sure it was a mistake. No one would intentionally put a chain on backwards. I, too, make mistakes all the time.

Old one he could use for rough stuff until it dies completely, assuming he can start it. And use the newer one for clean stuff. I like the way the video shows how saw dropping while dangling on the starter rope, and the compression test kind of contradict each other. Hence why in 48 years I rarely use use a compression tester, unless it's for a warranty claim. I know STIHL would insist on it even if you could drive a bus between the cylinder and piston. Obviously they don't realise that sometimes you can get a good reading even with a badly scored piston etc.

You know, before KZbin videos I would rarely do a compression test. I can “feel” whether a saw has enough compression. So many people want to see the test, so I give it to them 😊

Thanks for the video. I’m from the uk and we mix our own fuel, but the petrol we use does go off after 6 months. Why would putting full in the air intake help start the older saw? And what is the spark arrestor’s job?

I think if I'm not mistaken if u live in the UK u have to take a course in mainly safety and i hope maintenance before u can buy and run a saw. Maybe a good idea here and in canada 🇨🇦 too. What's your thoughts
