I'm a plexi fanatic. Always love playing through a cranked monster. Most of my all time iconic and favourite tones were produced by folks slamming a plexi, it's just got that certain something. Very interactive amp to play. My number 1 rule with a plexi is: crank the mids. You really make it work! Great demo.

I have a ‘75 50 watter and it’s the sound at almost any setting. I love amps and have several but invariably I’m always dialing them to sound as much like a 6 knob Marshall as possible. The only one’s I don’t is a recto family Mesa because I got it to actually be a recto and not a Marshall and another Mesa that is my defacto vox/fender amp. What I just love about the old/reissue Marshall’s, is you plug in, get the EQ up there and tailor the bass to how high you set the volume and then it’s just adjust Vol 1 until you’re in your desired sweet spot. Playing edge of breakup and need more body, nudge up Vol 2. Pick boost of choice and you will just have the most record/live ready rock guitar sound there is. Boost for gainy leads and heavier rhythms, no boost for a little more jangle and dynamic rhythms, volume roll off for a great clean. No voicing switches, power selections, modes, push pull’s and endless tweaking to get the mids and top end where you want them. It’s just there and ready to go in as much time as it took to let the amp warm up. If I could only have one amp it would be a 1987 or 1959 Marshall, hands down.

If you have a vintage style SSS Strat, be sure to try the Boss DS-1 (yes, the orange box :) ) with the Plexi. DS-1 was the distortion pedal of choise for a Strat for the late, great Gary Moore. Well, I believe Gary's Plexi was a Super Bass instead of Super Lead, so it was a bit warmer and less aggressive. But probably, if you set the Plexi for a warmer, cleaner but already a bit driving tone, it'll be firmly in the ballpark. Possibly the bright cap might make things a bit difficult..or not.

Sounds amazing. Just watch a video of Robin Trower. Never go wrong with minimalistic gear. With all the amps and pedals imitations it’s easy to miss the point and not reach the sooner we have in mind. I had my fair share with gear acquisition syndrome over the years. I now stick to the basics. The only thing I don’t regret is a Classic S Suhr guitar I have. YMMV Ps.: I’m now raving for the Diezel VH4 (still might be a G.A.S hallucination). A Synergy head would have save me a lot over the years. The VH4 synergy preamp would be ok into the power amp section of 1 of my Suhr amps.

This sounds so good. I'm trying to match the tone with Softube's Plexi Superlead 1959 by putting everything at 10 like you but it sounds horrible, any clue why?
@EugeValovirta230V4 ай бұрын
Cabinet, speakers and the miking plays a major part in the overall sound so most likely that. And Softube modelled the plugin using a certain Plexi which wasn’t mine. All tube amps, especially Marshalls, and especially (old) Plexis can sound a lot different from unit to unit.

Did you rebias the tubes when switching to the Variac?
I just wanted to comment. I like the jumper in the bottom I and top II inputs but I use the right II input instead of the left I. To me it sounds more modern and smoother but with equal amounts of gain. It's pushing the bass channel a little harder than the treble channel and there's only a very subtle difference. To me it's less harsh and sits in a mix much better. I feel it's more like EVH's early tone. The top I input is more George Lynch-Warren DiMartini style. Just my $0.02.

@SadLonelyEmo1619 ай бұрын
Is the amp for 230v and you run it on 140V? I told you before that will bring some problems. The heating voltages are critical for tubes because with to hi it burns down fast the heater of the tube and with to low it poisened the kathode of the tube. Maybee it sounds interesting but maybe you try to ask some one to get a stand alone heating transformer. Than you can try to put down the anode and grid voltages and not put down the heater voltage. Short the tubes suffer a lot from undervoltage at heaters !
@riangarianga9 ай бұрын
Both James Brown and Dave Friedman, whom serviced and inspected «The Legend», mentioned that EVH's renowned Plexi was a stock European unit, except the bias was set to work with that lower input voltage from the Variac.

Your video clears up in the myths about the brown sound ... EVH's first Marshall was a Non-export 220v model 1959 Super Lead 100 watt head just standing idle at a near-by mission or worship-house. Supposed to be used as a bass amp, but feeding a 220 v amp with only 110 v results in no sound whatsoever, as the sinus-curve at the output section will cancel itself out.
