I am a proud owner of a 9200/Jmp1 Rack, and I would never change it for anything else. The poweramp itself is such a piece of art

I bought my first electric guitar gear in 1991. It was all rack gear, because that was still the rage at the time. I had an ADA Microtube 100, a Rocktron mAXE, and an ART DR-X. Now I don’t own a single piece of rack gear, but a lot of that stuff goes for a fortune on Reverb now.

I just found one of these Marshall MGP-9004 preamps at a yard sale today for, get this : $10 bucks! And it's in near perfect condition. Unfortunately, it didn't have a power supply, but I found a generic 15V 1.5 amp AC power supply on eBay for $9 bucks and ordered it. Adding it to my rack setup with my JMP-1, ADA MP1, Peavey Rockmaster, Peavey TubeFex, Elevenrack, Behringer Ultra tube rack EQ and Marshall 8008 poweramp.

Yes sir but don't forget that Marshalls use EL34 tubes, so as long as the amp you're using has them, you'll be closer to the Marshall tone vs a head that uses 6L6 or 5881 tubes, which is more of an American sound. :)

@louistorres
@louistorres 3 жыл бұрын
Hey Charles, I think the JMP1 is way better but the 9001 is good but not great. It definitely needs a boost and the dials are a wee bit temperamental. Meaning, 4 can be too little and 5 can be over the top, so you have to stay between 4/5 and move the knobs in miniscule turns. Lol. Although I like the 9001, the solid state 9004 is much better. The preamp tubes in the 9001 feels like it was a gimmick/ marketing antic by Marshall.

Hey Louis! Great video! I read in the comments you also own a Marshall 9001 preamp, which is supposedly tube version of the 9004. How does 9001 compare to 9004? Which one sounds better in your opinion, or is there any significant difference tonewise? Both of these preamps seem to be quite rare, not much videos around... Could you possibly make a comparison video of these two preamps in action? :)

You know, I like them both bc they are each voiced differently from each other but are both great. It's like trying to decide between a Mesa Rectifier and Mesa Stiletto... If I were forced to give one answer, it would be the 9001, for the tubes that help create its growl. :)

I still have my Marshall 9060: 300W on each side, but it sounds like less. I used to have a Roland GP-16 for effects and a Digitech Twin Reverb as a preamp. Speakers were two Hughes & Kettners with Celestions. I have a GP-100 now and use the GP-16 solely for my guitar synth. It's all a bit heavy to haul around though, so in the end I switched to a Peavey Classic and/or Roland JC-120 with a couple pedals which I change from time to time. Funnily enough, now that everyone is Strymoned and Helixed, the trend appears to be to go back to rack systems. Not me - been there, done that.

hahahahaahahahhaahahahaha In 10-15 years, yo'll buy 1 kg of bread and they will give you change in Kemper or Axe FX II and stuff; and the tube preamps, tube amps will be there, sounding as they should sound and being what should be not only in relation to the sound that others will hear through it live in their faces, but be what it should be in the hand of someone who plays the guitar. Kemper is nothing but the copy of the mic loss with different approach but still just this, the copy in fact, again, of the loss of the microphone + the ability (or not) of those who are handling the "cloning" (of the settings) process. Some of people today don't know what's the experience and difference of hearing a Pink Floyd song through the vinyl or CD and listening David Gilmour playing LIVE in your face with real speakers just with the loss of your ears and not the 35-40% of loss of the mic (best mic) capturing. But yeah, I believe in the hybrid approach, I wanna see something with real hot tubes working as a "preamp" or something before the emulations and stuff. Actually saying that I really thing if something digital that reallys useful (BUT to use as a main trick for STUDIO, home recording and not to play (seriously) at all): are the IR's.
