The How I Met your mother series follows the adventures of Ted Mosby (played by Josh Radnor), who narrates the story of how he met the mother of his children. The story goes into a flashback and starts in 2005 with the 27-year-old Ted Mosby living in New York City and working as an architect. The narrative deals primarily with his best friends, including the long-lasting couple Marshall Eriksen (Jason Segel) and Lily Aldrin (Alyson Hannigan), womanizing playboy Barney Stinson (Neil Patrick Harris), and Canadian news reporter Robin Scherbatsky (Cobie Smulders); all of the characters' lives are entwined. The series explores many storylines, including a "will they or won't they" relationship between Robin and each of the two single male friends, Marshall and Lily's relationship, and the ups and downs of the characters' careers.
The show's frame story depicts Ted (voice of Bob Saget, uncredited) verbally retelling the story to his son Luke (David Henrie) and daughter Penny (Lyndsy Fonseca) as they sit on the couch in the year 2030. This future-set frame is officially the show's "present day", and How I Met Your Mother exploits this framing device in numerous ways: to depict and re-depict events from multiple points of view; to set up jokes using quick and sometimes multiple flashbacks nested within the oral retelling; to substitute visual, verbal, or aural euphemisms for activities Ted does not want to talk about with his children (sexual practices, use of illicit substances, vulgar language, etc.), all of which cause Ted to be considered an unreliable narrator.
While the traditional love story structure begins when the romantic leads first encounter each other, How I Met Your Mother does not introduce Ted's wife (Cristin Milioti) until the eighth-season finale and only announces her name (Tracy McConnell) during the series finale. The show instead focuses on Ted's prior life and relationships before meeting his children's mother.

This entire thing about Lily leaving for San Francisco right before the wedding just infuriates me!!! Lily got nervous about the wedding (as anyone would) but instead of talking to Marshall about it, she leaves him to do an art program that for some reason she can’t also do after getting married!!! The fact that she refuses to talk to Marshall about other problems later in the shows run makes me question why the two of them even are ever together at all!!! Talking about your problems is what couples have to do.

yeah, but lily was essentially having an existential crisis here so I can't really blame her. Same for marshall. By tring to force her to stay he was in a sense suffocating her by putting too much pressure on here; something that he shouldn't have done. They both didn't handle the situation ideally and well, things went south. But unfortunately, things like that happen. Also, don't forget, that the series has the tendency to focus more on the "low points" in their relationships. I assume that they talk about most of their problems. Heck, they even text each other when the other one goes to the restroom 😆 Lily made some great use of the pause function though, I give her that.

@@IschmarVI I hate to disagree. But Marshall never did anything wrong. So he wasn’t nervous about his wedding, that’s not wrong. And he never said Lily can’t go to San Francisco and he didn’t even try to stop her, she walked out the door after he said they were done if she did, her choice. That was 100% Lily’s fault!!!! Honesty if I was Marshall, I would’ve never seen Lily again.

@@ajdoms0187 uhm, saying "if you walk through that door, you will never hear my voice again" definitely qualifies as "trying to stop her". This is called "passive aggression". Don't get me wrong. I don't blame him for doing this, of course, but still, there's usually 2 people involved in a fight.

Hey, the music from Bloc Party was the best part of this episode (This Modern Love). The musical montage was fabulous! Can't stand Ted. He's boring. Barney is awesome. Robin is a bit on the bland side too. She's a type A like Barney. Wasn't she also Canadian and working on a visa? She's pretty living on the edge, betting it all. And I think Lily and Marshall should have played up their chic Bohemian style more. And it was only a summer internship. Such melodrama.
