In this episode I show you another one of my amps. Actually this is no longer mine, as when I bought the Master Lead 50 I had no use for it. So, I've sold it to a friend that now plays harp through it.
But doing this episode I've find out that the amp is incredible, and I'm now trying to buy another!! NEVER SELL GEAR!

Oh man Budda - when I saw Class5 - I was like "yesss" finally someone is going to do a decent indepth review of this great and misunderstood amp. I have the exact Class 5 and it is a love hate relationship. The amp is so unforgiving for sloppy play yet has such an amazing tone. This amp really takes some understanding and grows on you over time. Too many people don't understand the Vintage tone of it... if you plug it into a 4x12 it is huge. I am so glad I have resisted selling it. I don't play it a lot because I have the Vintage Modern with 425a Cab but every time I pull out the Class 5 -I like it more. Gotta believe this amp will become a classic over time. Thanks so much - this was a joy to watch!!! Apparently there were 3 versions of this amp... first version had single piece baffle and had rattles, they quickly changed it to a 2 piece and then a 3 piece back with the headphone/attenuator switch (which mine has) so you can definitely do bedroom level playing with the attenuator engaged.

Hi Budda! I came here to watch your demo of the "Class 5" as I have just bought one (should be here tomorrow!) and I LOVE your demo! I've watched a couple of others before, and yours is the best I've seen/heard so far! You managed to show many different "colors" of tone that this amp is capable of, and it´s very inspiring! Thank you very, very much + keep up the good work!

This is one of the first Marshalls I've heard that sounds alright across the board, most have to be dialed in just right, although it doesn't get that cutting high end the Leads, do. Keep on rocking, dude! (I wish I could buy this, there's one at the pawn shop right now, reason I looked up the video.)

I don't know if you've ever had the problem I've had, but just about every Amp I have had to tinker with it to sound like I wanted...fender tweed bassman.. Sounds good but I heard something a little different in my head before playing it... Vox ac30....Marshall's especially the DSL line. Totally a let down. But this little class 5!!! Man I tell you it was love at first sight. I'm in a vintage guitar shope...Dallas,TX and I asked to play this beautiful1964 ES-335.the real deal! And he was so kind, he plugged me into an amp...I didn't know what my back was to it and I went Wow! That sounds so good.. Exactly what I hoped this guitar would sound like. Then a 1956 fender Stratocaster. Then a 1964 Gibson Firebird. Then a custom shop '59 Les Paul and every single guitar sounded great. I asked him "man, that's incredible, what amp am I plugged into?" He looks and says " this ol' Marshall Class 5...they don't make'em anymore but they sure sound sweet don't they?" I said I'd like to leave with that amp, how much? $400 sold! And it sounds great in my living room. I'm not sure it'll be my only amp.. Got my eye on a supro black magic reverb. But I'm never selling that Marshall.

I have a 2010 Marshall class 5. I love the old school plexi tone I get from it. I removed the stock tubes and replaced with a Mullard EL84 in the power amp and 2 Genalex-Gold Lion ECC83/V759's in the preamp. What a difference in tone. This thing sounds great with the tube change.

So glad I bought one of these used a few months back. It takes pedals well and it's pretty loud for 5 watts. At home, I have mine set at low volume similar to the Jazz tone at the end of the video but then I added a boost pedal with some eq to get that break up sound at lower volumes. Just a great amp for home or studio

One of the best review of this Amp in the net. If I saw this review about a year ago. I would have never sold my Class 5 and my Classic Les Paul Gold Top. Luckily for me I still have another Class 5. Such a great dirty blues/rock sound. I'm going to look for one for myself This year Marshall introduced the origin series. I was really really hoping the sound something like these with more power..more options. Real early jtm45..plexi..lower gain Marshall sound. But I was disappointed..not what I hoped for at all

Mike Adams a great Fuzz face would be a good choice. The fulltone plimsoul or any other full range overdrive should give you what you need. Tubscreamer like o Erdrich should be too much midrange.

Eddie Cornish Don't ever sell it.. try it through a 4x12 or 2x12 and you will be amazed. It is a frustrating amp as it doesn't let me hide like my fenders do... you are right out there and everything is exposed... I wonder if the internal speaker is so great but hesitate to change it as I want to keep my amp original. An EQ pedal does wonders for the amp as I was almost matching my Fender Princeton tone with it. Add a reverb pedal and you are set.

So many videos where this amp sounds like cr**, even after being modded... You use it with my too favorite guitars, and make it SOUND JUST GREAT every time, taking the time to explain and show how to dial it for our needs. Great job Sir, thank you very much. I have a dsl 5c, and I think the classic gain channel sound pretty similar (at least it has the same character with a fuzzy OD and a flabby low end if not dialed correctly) so I guess it will be useful to follow your tips to improve the tone with mine. I don’t know if you had a chance to compare it with the C5 to tell me if I’m right? Anyway, thanks again for this tremendous video, keep rocking! Peace, JL

Jean-Loup Dutirou thanks a lot for your comment . I haven't tried the dsl but this is common to any vintage amp. If you dial in too much bass you get a more fuzzy tone. And I love that tone.

Hi man !! Excellent review and outstanding playing 😎 u rock.. I ve got the same amp, but it has a disturbing rattling noise .. It s the mark ii model I believe . I think the noises come from the valves . Do u know how to fixed? I love how it sounds I wish I could get rid of that annoying noise .. could make any suggestions ..

sebas oilher you might try to change the valves. Or try to understand if there’s something mechanic buzzing .

My Class 5 used to buzz so I pulled off the back panel of the cabinet and put the door seal with the sticky back between the panel and the cabinet and it fixed the problem. Now it goes to 10 no problem

It's good for the price, maybe paired with a particular guitar and EQ Pedal.I keep mine because it looks cool too but I play other Marshalls with EL34 rather than EL84 tubes.Thanks.

Well don't buy an expensive Tele. I bought one off eBay for 80 bucks, did some simple fret leveling and put some 20 dollar pickups in it and it blows away all three of my buddies Mexican and American teles. Dont skimp on amps tho.

It all depends on personal taste, but expensive gear doesn’t means it’s great gear, and vice versa. I’m glad you found a great cheap guitar

Hi Budda, your channel is amazing! I'm addicted!!!! :D After seeing this review I bought a used Class 5 for me. It's really a great amp but mine has a noise that seems to come from the valve or something vibrating in high frequency that is annoying me. It happens only when I hit some notes, like G, A... I searched in the internet and it seems to be a common problem with this amp. Did your amp had this problem? How did you solve it? Thanks!
@yvalentin
@yvalentin 7 жыл бұрын
I read that it can be caused by the speaker / valve position. They are too close of each other, and the speaker cause the valve to vibrate. Maybe you can add some foam or a piece of cardboard at the back of the speaker to reduce the effect?

@@BuddaGuedes hay thanks for the reply. mmmm... i checked out your suggestion on “Steppin’ Out” how ever it didn't sound like what you were playing, you started the riff at exactly 10:43 and ended at 11:15. it was very haunting the way you played it especially with the amp tone just sounded marvelous! . i like your channel, you have a very fresh perspective on things, well seasoned and inspiring.

@@BuddaGuedes ya know i keep coming back to this video, ive watched several other videos about this amp but know one seems to understand how to pull the sounds out like you do. i wonder what your back ground is, you seem like an old school pro, a bit crude in your own way but much more unique and versed liked you've played in a few previous life times but always guitar or some kind of stringed instrument. like your very old and ancient filled with this instinct and knowledge. sorry to keep pestering you. im actually a drummer turning guitar player. i played almost every style and ive jammed with some seriously excellent musicians but was never really to interested in fame. i took a lot of private lessons from rock to jazz. i could have been on some touring gigs. one of my bass players went on to tour with David Wayne of metal church before he passed away. i watched queensryche play in the basement of the drummers house before they got big. i seen a lot of the old metal bands from Seattle on their way up. im only 56 though but one guitar i jammed with played with some of the guys who later formed heart before the Wilson sisters joined. he passed away a few years back of cancer and was 10 years older than me, he was an incredible guitar player, in to Hendrix a lot, pink Floyd, and was a software engineer. he played a much cleaner Hendrix, didn't pull out the fuzz tone quite as well as you can.

I have the head version. I run it through a Hughes and kettner 2x12. It’s quite loud. To me it sounds best with vol about 10 or 11 o’clock. I prefer the cleaner sounds from this amp. I had to pull the back off the cabinet slightly to reduce the bass to my liking. It seems to take boost pedals in moderation but other pedals in light doses. No effects loop in mine. Just got a Cali76 today and this amp sounds better than ever.....just the Cali! ....nothing else.

Thanks for the demo. Just stumbled on your channel. I regret selling my Origin 5 and I either want a Class 5 or another Origin 5. The Origin 5 has a lot more to offer with an FX Loop, Pull boost, Tilt and power reduction. However, if the Class 5 sounds better I might go with the Class 5. Did you ever get a chance to play the Origin 5? Would love to hear your thoughts.
