Nice post, awesome sound and playing. Loved also the fact that you gave us "in a room" miking instead of typical stuff people do; Rock on!

Hey dude, nice review! Always good to hear what it's like in a fairly normal setting. How loud is it in a bedroom setting, like what volume did you have it set at when you were playing? I've got a 17 year old line 6 spider 2 - 30 watt and I can barely use vol 2 out of 11 lol
@darrenfrets3 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, I haven't used it too much yet but the 10 watt mode can definitely provide some decent tones at lower volumes! It also still sounds quite full. I will admit that it does sound better cranked, but that is the case with most tube amps. In the video I think I was on the 20 watt mode and around 3 on both channel's volume. That was pretty loud though. Probably louder than what is considered bedroom volumes. But the speaker in my 1x12 cab has quite a high rated sensitivity, so it's a fair bit louder than most other guitar speakers. Let me play around with some more settings tomorrow on the 10 watt mode and I'll get back to you! I do feel like the 10 watt mode should be able to handle bedroom volumes pretty well though. What sort of music do you play? Cheers!

@@darrenfrets Nice one, cheers for the reply! Mostly metal and rock, Metallica, Pantera, Motorhead, GnR etc. The line 6 is fine for what is it, but just feels lacking in the tone by quite a bit...I prefer the extra outputs on the DSL20HR over the 1watt, also means it should be loud enough for gigging if I get to that point. Thanks!

@@kamzz200 I am also interested in Darren Budds opinion. I play the same style of music too and am also considering getting a DSL 1 or 20 Watt Head. Bedroom volume is a great issue for me as well haha

Hi, I have the same amp - love the sound - very versatile from Rock to Metal :) I have a question - does your Marshall change the tone on headphones line out (in standby mode) when you are changing the presense and resonanse knob? My is not - however all other is working on headphones - volume too. Presense and resonance is working only when playing through the cab.
@darrenfrets3 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, Cheers for watching! It really is a great amp. I can't be certain but I do believe the presence and resonance are separate to the normal EQ and are actually apart of the power amp stage of the amp. This is why it's not having any effect on the tone that is coming through your headphones. Cheers

@@darrenfrets thnx for The answer. I thought The same. They are in Power section circuit, w ich is disabled with standby. Just wanted to make sure that it is not same flaw with my particular amp. And btw Great in the room feel and tone 🙂

Thank you for uploading this! I have a hesu wizard 1x12 with a 16ohm demon speaker, and i wondered how this head would sound with it. I was worried a little bit that the treble would be unbearable because the hesu is a brighter speaker and the marshall also has a more bright distortion sound. How do you like the head so far?
@darrenfrets3 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, I'm loving the combination so far! There's definitely plenty of high end, but I wouldn't say it's unbearable unless you're pushing the presence and treble too much. On the ultra gain channel I've been leaving the presence at 12 o'clock but the treble at about 10 o'clock, and that still has some nice sizzle to it but isn't too overbearing. I've also got the resonance and bass fairly boosted. But I am also using a telecaster. So that is going to already be more brighter than a lot of humbucker equipped guitars. If you're someone who prefers much darker sounding tones, this might not be the best combination for you. But in saying that, the EQ on this is quite decent and I'm sure you could carve out a tone you really like if you enjoy the characteristics of this amp. I'm going to upload another video, this week or next, just showing off more of the sounds but with the cab mic'd up. Hopefully that'll give you a better idea of whether you think it's the right amp for you! Cheers!

@@darrenfrets Thank you for the explanation and for taking your time on this. It helps a lot. :) I always used vsts and transistor amps, but this marshall is cheap for a tube amp and I'm considering buying one as my first ever tube amp :)
@darrenfrets3 жыл бұрын
@@spyware1100 That's all good! I definitely would of been more than ecstatic if this was my first tube amp back in the day! Has the versatility to get you a more than decent sound in most applications! What are your favourite amp sims you use currently? Do you use any of the Neural DSP stuff at all?
@spyware11003 жыл бұрын
@@darrenfrets I've tried pretty much everything in VSTs over the past 10 years or so. Nowadays i use Ignite Emissary, Amped Stevie T, Sigma by audio assault and SS-11X by mercuriall. Because the later two are not expensive and sounds good. I've tried neural dsp, but for some reason i did not like them very much.

Sounds awesome...which input are we supposed to use for a single 8ohm speaker. Can’t tell of it’s the middle or the one on the right may not matter but extremely curious
@darrenfrets3 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, either the middle or right one is fine for a single 8 ohm cab! I just use the middle one. But it definitely shouldn't matter! What sort of cab are you using with the Marshall? Cheers!
@neilgrenier76223 жыл бұрын
@@darrenfrets thanks brother I didn’t think it mattered... I’m running a mesa recto with a British v30. Just got the dsl20hr today so still tweaking it but the amp cab combo sounds killer. I also have a peavey 6505 that sounds kickass on that cab as well.... something about those mesa voiced v30s
@darrenfrets3 жыл бұрын
@@neilgrenier7622 Damn! Sounds like you've got a pretty sick setup! The 6505 through the Mesa must sound pretty beastly! I used to have a 5150iii 50 watt combo which was such a good sounding amp for high gain tones as well. Would love to get my hands on a 6505 though!

Hi, is the cab "tight" sounding ? Sometimes the porting makes cabs flubby/tubby in the low end ?
@darrenfrets3 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, I don't really have another cab to a/b it against but if memory serves me right, I do think other cabs I have owned in the past were a bit tighter. I still think it is a great sounding cab though, and sounds pretty big for a closed back 1x12. Also the speaker efficiency of the Hesu Demon 12" speaker can really help in getting some extra volume out of your setup if you are rehearsing or gigging without being mic'd up. But if tightness is your main concern, maybe I would consider something else. Definitely try it out in person if you can though! Thanks!

Does this amp sound good enough at lower volumes? Iam looking for a good overdriven metallica/slayer/trash metal tone. Iam currently using a blackstar 20ht studio head 20W. It has a master volueme and the dsl does not. So iam wondering if it can sound good with lower volume. Iam happy with the volume levels from my blackstar 20W head. So if this can be reduced to 10W i think iam fine? But what do u think?
@darrenfrets3 жыл бұрын
Hey mate, I think you should be fine on the 10 watt setting. Each channel has a volume control, so you can just crank the channel gain and back the volume off if you like. Just like most valve amps, I do think it benefits from being turned up a bit though. It can definitely get you pretty close to that old school thrash metal tone. There's another bloke on KZbin that shows off how to get a bunch of those old school sort of tones with the Marshall DSL20 plus an EQ pedal. He gets pretty close to replicating a lot of those tones that I think you're after. Let me know how you go! Cheers
