No position in the NFL has seen a bigger dip in play, pay, and performance than the running back. Pro Football Hall of Famer Marshall Faulk says this is who’s to blame for the devaluation of the position.

They are well paid mules. RB money is better spent on the offensive line because without that your chances of winning are greatly diminished. Once you have a very good line the NEED for a great RB are diminished because a good RB can get the job done. Most teams will pay o-line, TE and receiver BEFORE the RB because the rules favor passing.

Over-reliance on dual-threat QB's is another thing. If your QB can tuck and run and get a bunch of rushing yards, then you are taking a lot of the workload away from your RB.

3 factors that have contributed to the decline of the RB position -The rules of the game pushing more and more in favor of passing offense in the name of "player safety" -Running backs lasting less and less seasons before they start to regress, even without getting injured and even with modern medical science -An increase in the number of average running backs in the league, while the number of elite running backs has decreased

A major contributor to the dearth of elite running backs is the focus on passing leading to players shifting away from the position. Someone like Gale Sayer who have played receiver or defensive back if her were active today.

And yet the top 3 positions for concussions are cornerback, WIDE RECEIVERS and linebackers (not RBs). It also doesn't help that defenses often need to play in space (further from the offensive players) because of how ticky tacky the penalities are. The farther distance tends to result in harder collisions as the defensive player has more time to jump on the ball - ball carrier (resulting in higher speeds). If the NFL cared, they get rid of the two deep safeties, allow for man-to-man to be easier (less ticky tacky defensive penalities) instead of zone etc.

Been watching football since the late 70's. One HUGE difference I've noticed over the years is how much faster defensive linemen,& linebackers have gotten. My most memorable MNF game EVER was the Dolphins@ Houston Oilers. Absolutely ELECTRIC! Earl Campbell took a toss sweep,& outran Miami defenders as he scampered down the sidelines to seal the win. In today's NFL... Earl does NOT have a chance at running "East- West"; defenders are too fast& athletic. A hate to admit that, but it's the plain truth. RB's now are more valued for a skill that doesn't even require a ball in their hands.....PASS PROTECTION. You don't need to run a 4.4 in order to do that. After that comes catching from the backfield. You can find those traits in an undrafted free agent. Truth hurts sometimes....

Why are you mentioning this highlight. I watched that game and after E Campbell took the toss to the house, I punched the on/off switch on our tv and broke it. (I was around 12 then) Fortunately, I didn't get my butt whipped for that, but I deserved to. Btw, that isn't the most painful run against my beloved Dolphins. John Riggins took a handoff on 4th and 1 in Superbowl 18 for a td and won the game for the Redskins. Those two plays will haunt me for life. Thanks for reminding me. LOL

It has been devalued by the players because the position has been devalued by the game, imo, in the name of safety, and bringing in more than one back they believe will hedge against injury. Le'veon Bell was doing it since 2014, he had 2215 yards from scrimmage. As far as touches, compare 1998 Faulk to 2017 Lev Bell: Marshall Faulk had his most carries. 324 rush for 1319 yds 6 TD/106 targets 85 rec 908 yds 4 TDs. Le'Veon Bell was 1st in rushing with 321 rush for 1291 yds 9 TD/106 targets 85 rec 655 yds 2 TDs. 2018 Bell entered a contract dispute for, in his mind, to reset the value of the RB market. It didn't work out well for him, and it sure didn't do anything for the RB value.

There are no running backs left like Walter Peyton, Erick Dickerson, Marcus Allen, Tony Dorsett, Barry Sanders, Bo Jackson (before his injury). Back then teams had to scheme not just against the “run game” they worried about those running backs. Explosive, elusive, talented, could catch out of the back field, creative in open space. No one wanted to be the defensive player on a highlight real getting smoked. I can’t think of any- household named running back in today’s game. RBs have gone down in value because we've (wrongly) put a premium on QBs and WRs. It's a pass happy league. When a new, but old-school, coach comes along and wins by building his roster with RBs, run blocking linemen, and solid defense, the league will shift. But right now, college and NFL, everyone does the same thing. No coach or organization has the guts to go back to old school football. By the way, linemen love to run block.

The other side of Marshall’s argument: people (media, fans) complain that a team’s running a back into the ground giving him 300-400 touches per season. Then that becomes a negotiation point for why they want big money. Have they earned it? Sure. But teams will be convinced that that player’s career is nearly over because they’ve been giving him all these touches and age 30 is getting closer. So there’s no big second contract because the team thinks they’ll never earn it, time to reload and start over at the RB position. It’s going to take a vet RB to play extremely well past 30 to change the perception.

When he became the Washington Redskins head coach, he brought the Florida University spread offense to the NFL Many laughed it off but it's here to stay and it's all passing all day now. Sure, the Oilers had the run and gun in the 90s but it was a one and done experiment. The current NFL is addicted to WR's and QB's. The next position to get diminished will be the LB position. Eventfully it will be all nickel defenses.

The parts that Faulk is forgetting are: Versatility and RB production Versatility: Faulk was more versatile than most RB's. he could both run the ball (inside and outside) and split out as a viable threat from a WR type position. RB productivity: RB's can be run into the ground, if they do not come of the field. and you still just let them go after 6 season, because you know that if you got them 20-30 touches a game, they are probably starting to slow down from all the contact, particularly if they were like Zeke and primarily a running threat not a catching threat.

Faulk is right BUT what it doesn’t account for is the evolution of the game. It is now, overwhelmingly, a passer league. So the RB value is ALSO devalued as a byproduct of this. The GM, the front office, the coaches are going to structure their offense with 4 good - reliable WR AND 3 RB’s that can compliment each other. Because in today’s NFL, you cannot be a run first offense and win a Super Bowl. You will lose 27 - 7, 24 - 10 because you won’t put up enough points and the other team whose superstar QB is protected WILL. AND let’s not fail to mention QB’s that account for significantly higher percentages of the run game too. So a lot of reasons the back doesn’t get paid.

Splitting carries between RBs is nothing new. This happened even during the 1970s and 1980s. The 1978 New England Patriots held the NFL team rushing record for 41 years until it was broken by the 2019 Baltimore Ravens. That Patriots team split carries between 4 RBs. Their QB Steve Grogan, who was actually very mobile back in his early days, had over 500 yards rushing for that team. No one gained over 1,000 yards individually for that team and they had over 3,000 yards rushing as a team. Many FBs were also ball carriers back then which is why players like Larry Csonka and Franco Harris had great rushing stats back then. And they still split carries. What you don't see as much today is the RB who acts primarily as a pass catching specialist. These would be guys like Larry Centers, Ronnie Harmon and Lionel James. Does anyone remember the clutch catch Steve Sewell made in what was known as The Drive for the Broncos?

It's just that running backs are now high risk, with low reward. With the way the rules have evolved, I'm surprised the stiff-arm to the mask is still legal. Rules have made so that you just can't get the kind of game-changing performance on a consistent basis without injury from RB's. QB's are completely coddled these days, so why wouldn't you just give him the ball? He can literally get you 15 yards without the ball leaving his hands because the D lineman tackled him wrong. TD, Yards.... That is what is most valuable in the NFL today. QB's today play RB & QB simultaneously which essentially watered down the whole RB position.

The way football is played today is what Al Davis always envisioned. He never valued one Rb, he wanted a committee at that position big reason he didn't like Marcus Allen. Pass the ball, deep speedy receivers and athletes on defense. Owners knew this and formed it into today's game

IMO there just is too many "Ok-to-good" RB's and very few, if any, stellar RB's. Even the "stellar" RB are that way for 2-3 season and that's it. Either they start to decline rapidly or just get let go because there is a much cheaper, younger guy right behind him.

GMs should be paying for production. 100 yds = 7 pts TDs = 7 pts +17 pts/game = Win If you produce 10 TDs in a season, you're worth $10M/season No need to pay a guy just for showing up.

Its about PRODUCTION "One knee equals two feet" Probably what matters more for backs isnt total yards (anymore) than it is explosive plays (runs over 20 yds). 4 or 5 Explosive plays usually determine the outcome of a game

It's just a devalued position, period. Has nothing to do with a player tapping out for a play. He knows he prolly wasn't gonna be a part of the next play anyway, so why bother. The NFL doesnt want three yards and a cloud of dust. They want 80 yard bombs and the scoreboard blowing up. They think that's what we want, as fans. Long gone are the days where 2-4yrds in the first quarter leads to 5-8 yards in the fourth quarter. Running backs are a dead commodity

Faulk complaining about his position not getting paid. Maybe heshould have become a QB. There are more black QB's in college and NFL, than ever before. Why? they are getting paid more and not being touched in games. If they are athletic, they can run more in games.

The horrible truth is, in the 70's, the teams would take black QB's and make them into running backs. It was great because you never knew when the RB would get a pitch out and then hit a WR for a 50 yard bomb. it was like having TWO QB's on the field. Now, the NFL is FORSAKING the RB and just paying these "dual threat" QB's. RB and WR records will be a thing of the past as this retardo rugby style of football comes in. It's not 'evolution' if everything gets DUMBER.

The NFL wants parity no more blow out games college football doing the same thing. The runningback position was important back in 80s and 90s just look at qb stats from 60s to 2023 offense has tripled. Football games require high scoring games keeps fans in seats and TV watching folks a blow out destroys ratings. Blame the networks for this football is slowly becoming wrestling. Florida state got left out because of ratings Alabama and Texas bring in more viewers hence more money for networks a 12 game playoff will make college football more controversial.

Game (offensive focus) has changed just like the NBA has changed into a bunch of guys hacking up 3 point shots and very little emphasis on low post offense. It is ruining the game. I watched 5 on 5 pickup game at gym recently for 14 possessions or trips up the court…. I 💩 you not …. 13 possessions were immediate 3 point shots or a three point shot after maybe 1 pass. Everyone wants to be Steph Curry now.

it's simple, passing is more important in today's NFL. You could win a Super bowl today without having a top 10 running game. You would be hard pressed indeed to win a Super Bowl without a top 10 passing game. You'd need an all-time great defense.

Most of a RB's job is taken care of for them by their offensive line. That's the truth many RB's don't want to admit. If the line blocks well, the running play will be successful, if it doesn't it won't. There are backs that are better at creating their own holes than others, but ultimately a good back needs a good line. If you have a good running back but a bad line, you have a bad running game. If you have a mediocre RB with a good offensive line, you have a good running game. That's why RB's have seen their value drop and offensive linemen have seen their contracts go up. It's about the league recognizing which positions are most important. Marshall sounds very selfish here, like someone who wants his own success and cares nothing about the teams success. RB's careers are notoriously short because of the pounding they take, splitting carries reduces this wear and tear. I believe RB is the most replaceable position in all of professional sports, and the latest trend of not paying these guys confirms the league recognizes that as well.

Number one reason RBs can’t get big time contracts, they can’t get big deals out of college anymore. No reason to pay a lot of money for a back when you can get one with lower mileage on the cheap. RBs are like cars, depreciating assets.
