I'm going to build a trainwreck clone, and that battleship of an amp gave me an idea. Looks like trainwreck amps stack and glue the filter caps. I may just stack some boards like the brave builder of this beast. Keep the great content coming !!

I use radial caps(cheaper and better quality these days) and zip tie them down to the turret board. That makes it much sturdier and still easy to remove. Radials is the future more values longer lasting high temperature , rubicon nichicon are good brands.

In essence I can see what the previous owner was attempting to achieve here. The concept is great, the execution of the layout would never win a prize in an amp design contest. The potential of this chassis and it's TX's ( if still working) will be fantastic. One row of pots controlling a Fender Twin pre-amp, the other row a JCM-800 all ending up in a nice matched set of four 6V6's from JJ that would handle the HT voltage.

I am a hobby type person and dabble in building stuff and NO I would not plug it in , I would strip it down and make it into two HIFI amps or a guitar amp and salvage the parts from it. The parts in the amp could be worth more than its scrap value

Yes they are relays could be either 12 volt or 24 volt coils.

I'd fire it up. Too late now, alas, but whoever built it clearly had a concept of what they were doing. It's not a pretty picture, but it's difficult to build something this complex and make it look like a Hiwatt. Certainly, some of the execution leaves a bit to be desired, but I still tip my hat to whomever put all that work in! That's why I'd put some valves in it (not my best ones, obviously) and start troubleshooting. Filament wires carry some current but they don't need thick insulation, due to the low voltage. The gauge of the conductor is probably ok. I agree with you on the standby switch, though.

I wish to amend and withdraw my statement after watching the second video. Good God almighty, what a mess! 😂 I stand by the notion that whoever built it was very clever, but obviously too much so for their own good. It's like they dove straight into this without ever having built anything simpler before, like a champ or an ac15. But jeez, what an effort! I suspect even the boards were drilled and turreted at home, by hand. I still tip my hat, but I'm glad you didn't try to power it up! 😅

Actually, several really experienced techs have warned *against* using those generic "SM" silver mica caps due to a high failure rate. Better quality silver micas are branded "CE". Anyway, this thing is a complete mess!

I'm guessing if someone took the time to design and assemble that, it likely worked at some point. Many very early "point to point" amplifiers are not very pretty on the inside compared to today's standards. All those components could easily be reassembled into a variety of classic amps.

Those little yellow rectangular "bricks" appear to be relays. Looks to me like the perpetrator wanted to eliminate the solid-state logic and PCBs from the TSL2000. It's a complete rat's nest, of course, but the builder would certainly be able to brag that his amp was "hand wired": no PCBs in sight; and all the original digital logic switching has been replaced by "old school" relays, which some might think is an improvement. You could probably use the chassis and transformers to build up a nice instance of the 2203 type circuit, perhaps even with "channel switching" if wanted.

Have one of there amps the combo version tsl 122. I moded the shit out of the original bad conductive boards and got it running and sounding good but it was a a bit to much noise so I don’t use it. I think these channel switching amps should be pcb constructions it’s to much messy leads and potential sources for noise and ground loops. Headfirs amplifications down under make greate empty really well laid out quality pcbs for channel switching amps(Marshall style) that would be my way to go or build a classic plexi circuit with a Jose mod (one extra gain stage). The only good mod this person did was to mod the chassi with a flat aluminium plate instead of the original layout that only fit the original pcb which is not great. I will follow this project with interest because I want to rebuild my tsl122. New to your channel like it so far. Good luck!

Hello. Last month repaired one of these. The bias was running away due to the board being conductive. You cannot get these boards anymore. I used the Dr Tube bias kit to fix the amp. The only way you could get a board is to find someone who is breaking one of these for parts. If your board is suffering from runaway bias then check out the video I did on the Dr Tube bias kit.
