It's got that growl that I look for in a amp. Hard to find. But I know it as soon as I hear it. What a beautiful thing. Don't change a thing. Stay with everything you can. Even tube brands.

From what I have been reading the Young brothers liked the tail end JTM50's in particular for their SS rectifiers. I saw photos of some of their backline, post B in B and they had a couple JTM reissues that their tech pulled the rect tubes out of. What a fat sounding 45 this is though. Can really sink your teeth into that tone and sustain.

I have what I believe is a '66 JTM45. I bought it in the late '70s. It had EL34's in when I got it so I've used those ever since. I think the OT is a Drake 74-103 rated at 8k. Most of the caps date to '66. The original GZ34 dated to August 1965, but had to be replaced due to arcing. At one point I noticed yellow wax oozing from the power transformer, only to discover that, due to incorrect bias adjustment, one of the valves was drawing 110 milliamps! Once sorted, it now runs at a more conservative 39 mA.

Sounds great, George. I was going to ask if it were a pre-Black Flag amp before I read your description... Is the filtering lower than a tube-rectified / EL34 Black Flag? Mix resistors 270K instead of the BF's 470K? Very cool!

What do you find are the best settings for an amp like this George?

It would have been even more awesome sounding with strat :) I have JTM45 clone with EL34 tubes and yes, it's amazing! I can use KT66 too but i don't keep those that awesome sounding with JTM45 than some others, cleans are good but od a little odd and mushy. EL34 and 5881's are best power tubes to JTM45 my opinion.

Im thinking of buying a JTM-45 Clone built by Trevor Labovitz.It runs Genelax KT-66 Gold lion power tubes.I am coming from Fender Amps, and am looking fir my first Marshall, and i want that Marhsall sound.Is the JTM-45 too “American” sounding , and i should go for a JCM-800? Or another EL-34 Marshall head? Also, i was told i could run EL-34 tubes in this JTM-45 with a Bias adjustment.If i do that will it give me that Marshall sound?
@kuitaristi30033 жыл бұрын
@@historiclp4577 Maybe someone else can answer better way, but i recommend JMP50 like 1987 model for you because it's like middle of JTM and JCM what comes to sound. I always link Marshall sound to JMP era amps myself because i think that is the best Marshall sound. JTM45 is good but it's still part of Fender 59 Bassman tho sounding still different. You have to usually play JTM loud to get that sound we usually hear from it, or have VVR or similar solution to get more of it. Another good Marshall is 2061x model which is 20w (really more like 15w) little amp but has big sound and still very Marshall sound even it has EL84 power tubes. I have now 2061x clone with master volume AND VVR and i like it more than JTM or bigger JMP. Sound wise 2061x is more like JMP but can also sometimes do JTM type tones too.

@@kuitaristi3003 ...False Alarm...i cancelled that order and am going after a reguler JCM-800 2203 Reissue instead.These seem to be better than the 2 channel 2205 in the marshall world, Or maby that JTM45 clone...im also thinking of building a Mojotone Handwired 50watt british clone, basically a JCM800 point to point wired

George, How much longer is it going to be before you release that 50 watt amp? I talked to one of your people, months ago, and she told me that is was going to be out, this past April. Are you still working on getting them out soon? Thanks.

Sorry for the delays. I've been working for other companies and have little time left for my own designs. That said, it's getting close. I have parts in hand and a prototype will make sound soon. I'm sharing updates with our group on the Metropoulos Players Lounge on Facebook first, before going public. Please join.

What is a 'block end' model. I'm unfamiliar. I wish you would have played more of 'Rock Candy' BTW. Was this the final stage before the black flag 50wt? Sounds awesome. I can't seem to decide between JTM or SLP. I like the loose gain of the JTM but a lot of players claim they get flubby and therefore can't articulate a lot of hard rock staples.

Doubt that, guessing an original 128 Drake that was used during this transition for the EL-34's or a 139. The Merc's sound sterile and lack that organic element. Maybe good for heavy metal, but not for classic Marshall tones.
