JTM45 and 45/100 are my favorite amps, they can sound like huge angry Fenders imho.... Kinda make sense since they were based off the Bassman! Great demo and playing Johan!
@vintagecharlie59698 жыл бұрын
Very interesting comparison, Johan! I've never had the chance to compare a JTM45 to 45/00 next to each other, but i am very much surprized by how astonishingly different they sound. The mics on the cabs were placed identically / not moved during recording of both amps. I personally very much prefer the smoothness and compression of the JTM45 in this comparison. I have a JTM45/100 clone and it sounds rather like the JTM45, but with more punch and bandwidth - it does not sound as harsh as the 45/100 in this clip (not a bad sound, but not my cup of tea so to speak).
@JohanSegeborn8 жыл бұрын
+VintageCharlie Thanks Charlie, yeah everything was kept constant. All amps this old are individuals so it takes a comparison between a bunch of JTM45 to a bunch of JTM45/100 to get a clearer picture. I'm gonna bunch of JTM45/100 soon. Cheers
@michaelwoods90052 жыл бұрын
It's known as the "JTM45-100" because "JTM45" faceplates are all they had around to use, not because it's a 100W JTM45. The circuit is different in a few places, so it sounds different.
@vintagecharlie59692 жыл бұрын
@@michaelwoods9005 Yeah, but the preamps are basically identical. This is what i was thinking 5 years ago. Most of the differences are in the power section - 4x tubes, much larger transformers, different filtering, solid state vs GZ34 rectifier. My 5 years older self now knows how much tone actually comes from the power amp in these old circuits. I've even made some tests with running various preamps (e.g. AC30, JTM45, BF Fenderetc.) into the power section of a JTM45 and AC30 and the tone (when overdriven) is clearly dictated A LOT by the Power Section. So yeah, two very different beasts :)

I have a Germino Club 40 and a Classic 45 ( Jmp-50 and JTM-45 boutique clones ) and they are killer amps and also eat pedals like nobody’s business. Great video!!! I loved the 45/100.. it’s got that extra “something” and extra headroom.. similar to what I’ve got with my 100 watt Two Rock CRS. ( dumble like amp ) Great tone you have there in BOTH amps. Magic.
@willdenham Жыл бұрын
@Johan Segeborn, Do you have a preference Johan? I used to be all about 50/45 watters, but 100's seem to have something the halfs can't do. The attack and firmness of the single notes for instance, string seperation and the quality of the grit/gain.
@janalex122 жыл бұрын
Great comparison! I agree very similar but 45/100 slightly more aggressive. There’s another difference between the super pa and the regular 45 that may be contributing though. The mix resistors on the super pa stock are 470k giving a more aggressive sound and there a 560pf bypass cap missing on one of the mix resistors on the pa. I think this is accounting for some of the differences we are hearing. I have a 45/100 non PA and prefer it for blues rock. It’s more inspiring and versatile on its own

@Fletcher8838 жыл бұрын
mike s As a rule on any NMV (or even up to single channel JCM800) Marshall with any level of distortion going on, the bass should be at zero or very slightly more if a looser sound is required. Anything else is just a complete mess and looses definition

The 45/100 had a tighter edgier tone to it. With a Tubescreamer set just right you might even be able to replicate it with the 45 (ala. how folks run the TS in front of modern high gain amps to tighten things up.)
@JohanSegeborn8 жыл бұрын
+Mykal Anstrom I can try a TS with it next time
@Terribleguitarist898 жыл бұрын
That could be a cool little extra thing to toss into the comparison videos. My OD of choice is Butler Real Tube (Similar to the Tube Driver Gilmour and Eric Johnson use,12AX7 powered OD with 3-band EQ, Drive and Output), EQ with a slight emphasis on the mids and bass then the drive down (for just an ever so slight bit of breakup from the pedal) and the output up higher to push the amp itself. I've yet to find an amp that doesn't just sing with it in front. I'm starting to think more and more about the Supro Black Magick and how it would sound with it in front.
Do You know Johan....does this amp have the radiospares choke or the drake choke? Does it come with the higher voltage (560 volt screen) power transformer? I can't get enough of this video. The tone is so damn fine

45 sounds just a bit more compressed....45/100 sound like the 45 turned to 11! Love my 45 with a ppimv.
@JohanSegeborn8 жыл бұрын
+NYC LP Player Yeah the compression is the biggest difference.
@nycLPplayer8 жыл бұрын
Given the 30w vs "100w" difference but going into inefficient speakers I bet a 4x12 of say Eminence Red Fangs at 102.5 dbs would give the "100w" a run for its money without the extra weight and having more tubes to worry about. My guess is one plays a 45/100 because he can...not because it is needed....at least in modern times.
@JohanSegeborn8 жыл бұрын
+NYC LP Player Yeah, speaker efficiency should indeed be the first thing to consider. Just compare a Greenback 96dB to the Red Fang or a JBL. Thats an enormous difference.
