I've had the 60 and 30. I still have the JTM30 1. 12 combo. Sold my 60. 2. 12 combo because I liked the 30 better. Much better dirty tone with the 30 to my ears. I do miss the duel reverb on the 60 but that's about it.

Hi Dave! First off, congratulations to acquiring your new amp! These were produced, I believe, for only 7 months (first introduced in 1996 and superseded by the JCM600 sometime in 1997). Very good sounding clean channel, the overdrive channel sounds OK, considering there are some clipping diodes in the signal path. The bad news is, these jtm series were not engineered very well. The horizontal position of the valves and of the EL34’s in the output section in particular, may lead to overheating issues if they are biased too hot and played at stage volume for a long period of time. The second problem is the unfortunate placement of two electrolytic caps(mounted on a pcb) right below the power valves. The heat will cause the electrolyte of said caps to boil off over time, so they dry up much earlier and don’t smooth out the dc voltage coming the bridge rectifier anymore. You will notice it by hearing some ungodly amounts of hum, ranging from 60Hz to 100Hz.

Yes I've had one for years blows internal fuse regularly has been at amp tech so often one of the reasons you and this amp convinced me to go to solid state. I'm very happy with my silver stripe bandit very solid

We have a JCM600 2 x 12, which was the successor to the JTM60 amps. All of this series can suffer from overheating issues, but I think the JCM600's less so, as they have a plastic grille in the top of the cabinet which lets some of the heat out. We got our JCM600 for less than £300 a couple of years back, in great condition, but cutting out intermittently. However, I tested the tube bias and it was biased too hot. Since adjusting this it has run flawlessly for 2 years and is used heavily by my son, often for 8 hours per day. Great tones, both clean and overdriven.

That was one of the best thing about solid state and modelers vs tube amps. Every time I plug in my strymon iridium, it sounds the same. Every time I plug into my ac30, it sounds different. One day the ac30 sounds amazing, next day it sounds terrible.

Yep I had an AC15 it got replaced by a blues cube stage 60watt amp solid state is much more consistent and when built properly sound awesome.

I find that with my valve amps. I've had mostly marshall and fenders and there all the same. I don't mind it because when there good there far better than solid state to my ears anyway. I have a hot rod deluxe and a marshall origin 20 so different brands and one day you plug in and it's like the best sound ever every pedal every guitar sound killer then the next time awful both amps some times the marshall some times fender. But I've here lots of amp guys say the voltage in you house fluctuates a lot your valves need the correct voltage and there's not much tolerance before they sound bad. You should be getting 230v but this can go down to 220v or be at 245v. You can get a regulator to keep it even never tried one but it makes sense

Since then I have owned Dr Z’s, Fender twins, Supers, I currently own a Mesa Lonestar 100w and Marshall Silver Jubilee RI and JVM never had problems with inconsistent sounds or reliability issues....not once. My fave is the Jub

Honestly I much prefer valve amps. They sound fuller and warmer and more responsive to me, particularly when they’re warmed up and turned up to a decent volume. The main issue is that you have to turn them up to get the best out of them and that makes anything bigger than 5W more or less unusable in the home or project studio environment. They’re just far far too loud. What most people need is a small valve amp that you can crank the master past half way without annoying the neighbours. Unfortunately there aren’t really any options that tick all the boxes. I want something small (1-2 Watts) that has a quality 12” speaker, the full range of EQ options AND an effects loop so that I can run delay and reverb between the pre-amp and power amp. All of the small amps I am aware of have a single tone knob a cheap 8” speaker and no effects loop.

These were Marshall’s answer to/attempt at a more Fender-like sound. Higher headroom, crisper highs. They sound beautiful, but I’d keep a fan aimed into the back. Known for overheating badly. There’s a mod some people do to put a shield above the tubes.

Yes Dave, I've got one. I had one years ago and it kept blowing up and overheating so got rid of it. Had loads of amps since and could never get close to the sweet tone of the jtm 60 so had to bit another luckily this works great and has the sweetest Marshall cleans ever.

I have this amp, I made two mods, one was putting a cooling fan on the cage, and the other was putting a switch that turns off the clipping diodes part of the boost channel circuit, and the drive becomes even more wicked.

I had a JTM 30, the two by10, best sounding amp I’ve ever had, and I’ve had a fair few including a Marshall DSL 602, Marshall DSL 401, Fender HRD, Fender Blues Junior, and currently H&K Statesman ( which is pretty good). The JTMs had overheating issues. Mine blew up and caught fire once! However, once I had the transformer replaced it was great. Sadly I joined a band where the other guitarist used a 100watt stack, and a very loud drummer who told me I needed a louder amp, so I traded it 😒

I have the jcm 600 2x12 basically the same amp. Love mine it’s like having a JCM 800 (clean channel) and a JCM 900 (OD channel gain 20) in one box 👍

I totally get your main 'grinds my gears' gripe about the consistency of valve amps. I've played JCM800's for decades and it's the only thing I can ever fault them on. They can vary. And there is no way around that. And its flipping annoying some days. I also totally get you're a Strat guy through and through cos I am too. But... I can't help comment that you playing an E335 through a valve Marshall works so well for your sound. It really does. Your sound here is simply sweeter, warmer and more vibrant. But they're probably not the right words. The best way I've ever had it described to me me is it's akin to switching a stereo sound system on to play your fave song but one of the speakers isn't working.... but sometimes you just simply touch the lead and the other speaker explodes into life. Its that moment of 'clarity' and 'aliveness' and 'moreness' that you experience. It honestly simply sounds better. Again appreciate that's not your preferred 'comfort zone' so ultimately you'll choose what works on all levels for you inc feel of the guitar. And that's of course as it should be. But your E335 through these Marshall valves sound is stunning. Your Strats and especially your LP still sound better through the solid MG's. But the 335 sound here is eclipsing all of that.

I still have the 2x12 in pristine condition, bought it new & still has the original valves (hardly ever used), so hopefully this vid will soar the second hand price sky high and I can retire to a Caribbean island ( once lockdown is lifted of course) 😁👌👏 P.s.regards the heat issue, I still have my 'cage' on the amp but fixed a piece of aluminium sheet plate above the tubes, to deflect the heat, this also works....

They mounted the tubes like that because they were taking chassis from a combo and mounted that way to allow pcb boards for the other stuff on the amp. It's got 2 effect loops and a bunch of other stuff on the back and on order to fit that all in a head unit they had to develop it that way they did.

Hello from Scotland. Dave Davis of the Kinks (Rays' brother) is credited with being the first to slash the amp mesh. Dave Davis tells of the time when he couldn't get the sound he wanted and out of sheer frustration just slashed four rips on the cover. After he started playing again and heard the Raw sound that came out, he let the other guys hear it, put it over a piano riff that Ray was fooling with and... You Really Got Me" was the result! 👍🎸

To be precise when I listen to Carlos Santana live throughout my life having seen him nearly 20 times in addition to his albums and live albums I hear the exact same warm and buttery delicious tone coming out of your guitar Dave as I did when I listen to Carlos when he really grabbed me as you just did. Hi Dave, if you are keeping your amp don't buy a new speaker, you can repair the cone with some industrial paper towels and PVA glue then spray paint it Black with a tin of automotive black paint from Poundland and it will sound fantastic, I've done it and it adds character to the sound. What is the issue with the tube cage? Im looking at getting one of these. Do they cause the tubes to over heat? Thats one issue that seems common with this amp tubes cooking to board, a heat soak between the tubes and the board might be a solution? any thoughts? I think the difference in tone does not have much to do with the day of the week, but more with how hot the valves are.

tone is 70pct in the hands and we all know you hv that. I think you should keep this one bro. Ive recently switched to tube amps after 30yrs of playing ss. In fact, i discovered you from ur vid why i prefer ss lol!! THERE IS A DIFFERENCE IN FEEL AND TONE. told myself for yrs there wasnt. I also got rid of a boss gt8 prosesser and went wit analog pedals. Now i have replaced tubes in a vrate vc50, no bias req. and 3days after i bought a marshall dsl 40c tubes blew!! 2014 model so, to be expected. Had to risk my life biasing it, but hey, all for R&R man!! no looking back for me. Keep that beast dude!!

Ive own a jtm 60 stack 4x10 (celestion gold series speakers) bought it in 1996, a very rare rig indeed. it's the dogs bollocks. your model can over heat, the differance is the vent grill on the top. Hot air rises and yours ain't got no vent

Amp sounds so great! I get it though. Not nearly as reliable or consistent. There we’re so many awesome riffs in this one. Especially, loved the Tele and Jaguar stuff. Phew, swear you just keep getting better, and better all the time. Amazing playing! At least if at any time the amp should break down on you at least you know you’re covered with a bunch of amazing solid states to play through till it’s feasible to get it fixed. So that’s always some reassurance. It’s a nice piece to add to your arsenal.

If you look back at Marshall's history, I reckon you could find every one of their amps get a bad rap by some people in one form or another. At the end of the day, they all sound like Marshall's - quirks and all. That's why we love 'em. I've got a TLS60 combo with blue tolex and the goldy sort of grill cloth - I love it. But I would change out those EL34's Dave. That's the one thing that really wears in most Marshall's if you like output power tube distortion. And you're right, they can sound slightly different on different days. I'm sure it's got to do with Voltage fluctuations and temperature. But I don't find it that drastic.

Why don’t you invest in a power line conditioner and perhaps a Variac to tweak the voltage into the amp. Solid state is more consistent because the power transformer is dropping mains voltage and large swings in mains voltage yields tiny changes in secondary supply voltage to the circuit. Tube amps go in the opposite direction. Invest a little into conditioning the line voltage and you will be amazed at the consistency

That Amp really does Rock Dave. Maybe if you get new tubes it would stabilise also it may make a great conversion to amp head project. I feel the clean is perhaps missing a depth that the MGs seem to have, but that could be down to the single speaker V the Marshal cab thing. Brilliant playing as ever Dave 👍😊👍😊

I owned a 1x15 version of this amp. It sounded great at any level. Over heating issues gave them a bad name and the QC was not very good. Shame as you can hear here they are a great blues amp.

One issue with these amps is the way they mounted the power tube right under the PCB causing possible problems with overheating . I happen to like these amps except for that issue
