@@DouglasEdward84 >Right wing authoritarianism So... Fascism? Franco and Salazar were never so hot on all the race stuff; Salazar being a nationalist and Franco allying himself with the church more than anything. I, as many Marxists do, see fascism this way: capitalism + collaboration with banks and industry + intensified state violence + idealism (nationalism, religious zealotry, tradition, race, etc; big ideas which are not material but make some people feel good)+ intense rejection of anything against that ideal ('untermensch', Communists, foreigners, etc). Once fascism is thoroughly entrenched, and threats to capitalism and the fascist regime at large have been subdued (as in the cases of Salazar and Franco), the usual fire and brimstone of the fascist orator is no longer needed. Hitler (and I guess Mussolini?), being at war with 1) Communists (USSR) and 2) strategically opposed capitalists (Allies), still needed all that mumbo jumbo about race, and the Thousand year Reich, and so on.

@@pedrosampaio7349 Same thing in the Greek civil war. The British supported Nazi collaborators to fight the communist ressistance. An that a coincidence that all of the Mediterrenean dictatorships from the early 30's to the late 70's were backed by the US. What a coincidence.

@@jimtroy4380 I have heard about the case of Greece before, and also about the USA being prepared for an invasion of Italy in case the reds got in power, eventually just opting for rigging the elections in Italy and France so that conservative anti-communist governments won. But it seems like a stretch to say all the Mediterranean dictators between 1930 and 1945 were set up the Americans. But I'm not exactly very educated on that so you tell me.

In 1946, General Electric built 20 large electric locomotives for the Soviet Union. Before they were completed and exported the state department interceded and stopped the sale. General Electric eventually sold the locomotives to 3 different railroads: Chicago, South Shore and South Bend Railroad got 3, a railway in Brazil got 5 and the remaining 12 went to the Chicago, Milwaukee, St Paul and Pacific (Milwaukee Road). The locomotives on the Milwaukee Road were given the nickname "Little Joe".

Interesting comparison. Indeed these two strategies do have a lot in common: build up weaker economies to grow US/Chinese influence. But there are still some just as interesting differences between the two. For starters, the countries that partake in the B&R initiative are mostly poor countries from the global south, the world's economic periphery. These countries, many even after their independence, struggle to keep western influence away. Their markets being forcefully opened to western Multinationals for the exploitation of both plentiful natural resources and cheap human labor. The looming climate crisis, which will most strongly affect these (sub-)tropical regions, also does not make their lives easy (droughts, rising sea levels, climate refugees, etc) Europe during the Marshall Plan, on the other hand, was the former imperialist core of the world, the guys who exploited the global south. Even after losing their colonies, many in (Western) Europe were and still exploit these regions by collaborating and being in friendly terms with the main imperialist daddy, the USA). Now, I consider China to be socialist, which even among fellow socialists, is a controversial opinion to hold. Essentially, their strategy is to: 1) Integrate into the global capitalist framework, instead of accepting isolation (done) 1.5) temporarily hold back worker rights and the such to accommodate western industry (done) 2) Use this industry to and integration to form a sort of soft power, a power based not on military might makes right but on trade and diplomacy. (In progress, though very far through) 3) Use the industry to advance your own technology and native industry (arguably done) 4) Take down the US and the west as the world's sole hegemons, making at least some space for China, from they can work ahead towards socialism and communism and reduce some of their more restrictive measures. (Close to beginning) If you see here, whereas the USA with its Marshall Plan wanted to keep a capitalist order by quickly rebuilding Europe, China wants to follow through on its socialist path through a more peaceful, but slow and steady, partially by building up exploited third world countries. So that's just a take on it which I thought might be interesting to share.

@@pedrosampaio7349 An excellent argument, but I disagree on a few points (mainly, China's motives). Based on China's history, namely regarding the British, I would contest they are building up their infrastructure and industry to combat another series of opium wars. China's history with the Western European nations has taught it that in the international market, isolationism only weakens and retards the economy. What they are attempting with the other nations under their sway is to establish their own sphere of influence. This way, the Chinese government will have a reasonable chance of preventing another such episode. As to what form of government, I don't think it matters very much, as the Chinese have laboured under autocratic rule in all forms for the entirety of their cultural memory in one form or another. The Chinese tend to play the long game, as such they are most likely building themselves up to either deter or win future international confrontations.

I think that the Marshall Plan was a overall good thing for Europe but that heavily depended on how the receiving countries spent the money. UK wasted most of the money on trying to keep the colonies and that was mostly a waste of money where as the countries that spent it on rebuilding the industry it had an impact.

To be fair, with Europe devastated and the UK broke, even without the Marshall Plan, Europe would have had to buy American to rebuild because there simply was no other country yet able to export. So it did benefit everyone to get Europe up and producing as soon as possible. The reason the Allies made sure West Germany became strong and producing as opposed to keeping it totally dependent was to lead a strong Europe to counteract the Soviets. that was the same reason that the US helped Japan recover quickly because by then the Chinese Communists had won the war for the Chinese mainland.

An unfortunate downside of the Marshall plan was the Blackfoot confederation requested money from the BIA to develop mineral and oil leases on their reservation. This was denied as the BIA money had been sent to Europe and the chance for the blackfeet to invest passed by the time the funds were yet available again.

So........ No judgement as to whether the Marshall Plan succeeded? I look at West Germany v. East Germany and can draw a pretty clean line.
@gerdforster883
@gerdforster883 4 жыл бұрын
That is a way to simplistic view. East Germany was mainly hamstrung by two things: 1. They kept paying reparations way past the point West Germany did in the immediate post-war years. Sure, West Germany would later resume payments, but by then, her industry was in full swing again and could easily afford the payments. East Germany paid at a time when they really couldn't afford to. 2. East Germany had almost no natural resources, bar some uranium (that went straight to the Soviet Union as reparations until the mid fifties) and low-grade lignite. Most of Easte Germany also had been way more rural than West Germany, so from the start, they lacked both the industry AND the skilled workforce.

Goddammit, we can't even be the good guys correctly. 200ish billion dollars and trillions of calories of food and we still botched it by being greedy. It's likely that Europe bounced back like it did because there was already some political stability because the Axis was gone. That's a pretty huge and uniting factor. And because the Europeans had give up colonies, especially ones that were now much better equipped and trained than at the beginning of the century. The Marshall Plan was nothing more than a salve for the conscious of our citizens. Plus we can't pretend that the UK still wasn't receiving aid from Canada and Australia either. Neither nation was something to sneer at. If the US had truly wanted to make life better for as most people as possible and keep them from being radicalized, we would have ended segregation after the war. Oppressed, second class citizens are ripe for radicalization and we did exactly jack and squat for them.

The Marshall Plan by itself shouldn't get all the credit. It was the mobilization of all necessary aspects needed to pull the plan off that made it work. The CIA in this case being a necessity to prevent the stifling factionalism that cripples progress in the third world. I feel what is important to note is that the plan was put in place to REBUILD Europe, not build it. The industry and institutions responsible for the economy and security of the nations being rebuilt did actually exist prior to being wrecked by the war. This is why aid and loans hardly make noticeable differences in the current third world. The institutions and industries do not exist. They must be built rather than rebuilt.

Stalin knew it was a tiger they couldn't ride. So did Marshall, which is why he extended the offer in the first place. In the end, I'd say the Marshall Plan did more to end Soviet totalitarianism than nuclear weapons ever could. People want to believe they can have at least some control over their destinies. Marshall wasn't just offering it; he was making good on it. Compared to liquidations and gulags, who wouldn't take him up on it? Unless, of course, you had a Makarov pistol at your neck!

I gott asay a word here about Social Democracy vs Communism. Communism favors abolishing private ownership of ALL "means of production", i.e. property used to generate profit/income. Social Democracy does not - it's basically, to paraphrase Alexander Dubcek (you'll see him later in an undoubted later video of the 1968 Czechoslovakia revolution) "capitalism with a human face". That means basically capitalism regulated to mitigate against the worst effects of the pure capitalist system. SD systems put higher taxes on the wealthy in order to abundantly fund key services regarded as a human right (banning unsafe food and drugs and unsafe consumer goods, education, health care, unemployment and disability insurance, family leave for childbirth and caring for sick relatives). Another aim is to tax wealthy so as to prevent huge inequalities of political power (money often equals power, after all).

Keynesian economics do fine when it comes to recovering economies, it's just they suck at dealing with supply shock inflation. Even the "Supply side economics" is just a form of Keynesian economics. Fact is that other than a brief stint under the Carter Administration, Keynesian Economics, in one form or another, dominate for good reason.

I doubt that without The Marshall Plan Western Europe would remain capitalist. Propaganda, most in the form of comics and movies made us believe that the United States and capitalism won the war against the Nazi regime, but as the video said people saw the Soviet Union as the winner. Some countries would end up electing communist or socialist leaders after the war. Not Portugal or Spain though. Those countries were under fascist dictatorships. So much about fighting fascism am I right?

@@RickyBobby_USA Great Recession: No this was problem caused by the private markets. In fact it was because the government deregulated them that it happened. While partly it was because the government helped people get home loans, the real problem was when companies like AIG and Goldman Sachs consolidated bad loans into derivatives, to which they payed off the credit rating agencies to label as good despite being bad, and sold them to make a profit. They knew exactly what they were doing and that they would crash the economy, and they did so, they also bet on holding the entire country hostage so they could then get bailed out. Medicare: I wouldn't say the program itself is a problem. Without medicare, millions of people would be without healthcare and without the means to pay for it. Never Ending Wars: Agree here, to some extent.

@@TheDirtysouthfan Never a consideration of pay as you go? Govt promises, overspends, prints, devalues, borrows bc it doesn't want the ppl to lose faith in it. We're $22trill in debt and Govt is bigger than ever and has always been in charge. If private companies caused the problem it is with the knowledge that govt will reign them back in and bail out whoever. Govt wants their cut, they have the monopoly of violence. I think many ppl criticize the "free market" as the culprit when they really should stop saying, "We can do all things through govt." Govt subsidized itself and there is nothing that it will improve upon with that business model.

RickyBobby BobbyRicky “govt wants their cut.”...?? Govt corruption comes from politicians handing out taxpayer money to wealthy private interests, not from funding programs for the masses! You mentioned Austria as example that the covert actions and sabotage helped keeping it from the influence of the Soviets while it beeing mostly surrounded by socialist countries. (like west germany in the north west, switzerland in the west, italy in the south?) The "Staatsvertrag" of Austria which made it a neutral soverign country (the quote there is a bit like "neutral in the swiss form") after WW2 was only signed by the USSR after the neutral clause was added. So basically the USSR signed its own ideology out of the treaty. And any change in the countries constitution to this day that would change something that is covered by the treaty still needs the approval of all 4 signing countries or their "inheriting countries". Thus, the mention at 10:55 surprised me a bit. So maybe not the political example, but I think it is true for the economy, which benefited geatly from the Marshall Plan. (During the occupation between 1945 and 1955 the USSR shipped all factory equipment in their occupation zone "home"....)

The USSR was a socialist state and it has deemed itself as one many times. The Soviet Union developed socialism . The difference here is that communism is the ideas of Karl Marx and Friedrich Engels which has nothing to do with the system put in place inside the Soviet Union. Its very name states its socialist nature since USSR stands for Union of Soviet Socialist Republics. To make it even more clear communism seeks the abolishment of the state and the transition of factories to the workers while in the USSR a planned economy was used and factories belonged to the state, that's why the USSR is often called socialist, not communist.

Anzac-A1 Communism is the end goal of most socialist ideologies. The USSR could not have been communist, because in a communist society, things like the state, currency, the police force, the army, do not exist, yet the USSR had all of those. The USSR was a state socialist country, although I’m sure socialists more versed in socialist theory than I am will prove me wrong, or provide an alternative.
