I've owned this head and cab for a while, it made me smile when you started playing because thats exactly how it sounds in real life, in the hands of a mediocre player like myself! It's pure plexi - I love the V-type speakers and have no desire to experiment with others. It can also do some great fat cleans & edge of breakup bluesy sounds with the channels patched together, it really is very versatile.

As much as I love to watch your demos of rare, vintage amps and cabs (that most of us will never play) it's a pleasure to watch your demo of a stack that I've got myself. I love this amp, and I hope your comparison on Wednesday won't make the SV20 sound bad. Currently building a 1936 cab, to go with my SV20, but waiting for Greenback type speakers (recreations of vintage GB's) to be available again. I prefer to play the SV20 through attenuator (homebuilt), and push the amp. That's the best sound, I think. Would really like to hear you do some Hendrix style playing on Strat through this amp, as well. Thanks Johan, and looking forward to Wednesday!

The SV 20H came home with me in February this year. I run it through a straight 1960 4x12 loaded with greenbacks. It is louder than hell. I’ve had several versions of the 1987x, and this amp is only marginally quieter. As far as hiss and noise go, mine is really quiet, even when cranked and channels jumped together.

Marshall hit a home run with this series. The sV is great when bridged and the sJ is full of suprised too thanks for pulling the Chassis and the gut shot are the first I have seen.. But the SVi really want to pair with the 1965b chafe in 1985, it is a dark cabinet but not the 55hz dark.. The 1965 cabs are becoming hard to find in the States. thanks Johan.

The SV20H is the head for my living room stack. I use a 1966A, I discovered the original vented G12T-75 speakers were out of phase when switching to Greenbacks. The way the SV20H sits on the 1966A, it's proportioned like a small box 1987 on a 1960A. I like two settings, both with a jumper: everything at 5 straight in, and everything at 7 and slamming it with a Hornby-Skewes treble booster clone. As I am in an apartment, I use an attenuator. I've poked around inside, and the Studio Vintage has the .68u bypass on V2A. I saw some complaints about brightness in the comments, maybe removing that bypass cap could help them. I like the cut the bypass cap adds. I briefly cascaded the preamp before switching back and realizing the jumpered normal channel is an important part of the Plexi sound.

Thanks, I run this combo, but I started of running it with the SV20 into my Badcat 4x12 with their custom V30's. That was a bit of a problem as it peeled the paint of the walls, not so much a problem in my house, but it was for the neighbours as it peeled their paint too. So bought the matching cab and it toned it down somewhat enough to not destroy my neighbours paint anymore. I do prefer the Badcat 4x12, which has an Orange Rocker sitting on it, another lowish wattage beast, but being master volume I can tame that. Happy sounds :)

Nice video. As others have said, Marshall did a great job with their Studio Series. The key, I think, is their use of EL34 power tubes rather than EL84's that you would normally expect in a 20w amp. @@JohanSegeborn I guess that’s the rub, I don’t know how noisy it’s “supposed” to be. And it’s really only the bright channel. The normal channel is very quiet.

Great demo, thank you. I’ve asked this question a few times and seem to get different answers…. For anyone who owns this amp, do you feel it is loud enough for gigging? I do not mic up and usually only play small pubs with a drummer and bass player. The singer plays guitar occasionally. Would this amp be enough? I’ve been using a Blackstar HT100 for 9 years but is starting to show signs of wear and the weight is a killer. All opinions welcome. Thank you.

I have the SV20 and it's the loudest 20w amp I've ever heard. It will easily drown a loud un-mic'd drum kit out. I've gigged in pubs without micing it up with no problems. I put a master volume in the FX loop so I can crank the preamp up and very rarely have I had the master volume above 50% even when gigging.

Should I get the combo version. Or get the head and run it through a 1960a cab. I'm on a budget of 1,500

I haven’t played the combo yet so I gave up get back to you. My guess is to get the head though

@@JohanSegeborn does the SV 20 have that crazy lower mid growl like the real plexi does or no
@montag45162 жыл бұрын
I have the stack as shown. It looked great and has way more volume on tap for my needs. Maybe combo would've suited me better (and add an extension cab when desired). Although I much prefer the controls facing forward, as on the head, rather than having the controls facing upward. Over time, the separate head will almost certainly spare some of the vibration punishment that can affect tubes in a combo amp.

How does it compare to a Marshall Origin 20 head?

Does anyone think pairing this amp with a slightly oversized cab using a single g12h30 speaker would give a little more low mids? I have a 4x12 of them but don't so much at home or for recording. Would be more about turning up on the 5 watt setting or attenuating on the 20 watt setting.

It’s a good speaker but brighter and has less weight in the lower mids compared to a Greenback.

@@JohanSegeborn From what I’ve heard so far I dig it; would you say it’s closer to a blackback, or is it a completely different speaker?

@@DMSProduktions I agree with you, the Marshall Studio Series amps are amazing. I’d love for a studio vintage, but even on low power I can only crank it up when my parents aren’t home, which is a rare occurrence since I’m at college when they’re at work most of the week

Weird that Marshall made a 20 watt and then puts 70 watt V type speakers in the 2x12 instead of the classic 25 watt greenback . Then they charge 1200. for the 2x12 with the cheaper speakers. Bastards!! Almost as bad as Gibson with their greed.

Looks cheap, I'd get the 1987 over these things all day long, even if only from a serviceability standpoint
