Great riffage and demo. Sounds great from here. By the way, the reason that the tone stack does not change much the tone in vintage plexi is because most of the distortion comes after the tonenstack, from the power amp. So the tone stack is a pre-distortion tone shaping , like the eq on Mesa Mark amps..

This amp sounds so much like classic Maiden. Piece of Mind in a box.
@lovecraftmusic87178 ай бұрын
If I find one in a store I'll give it a try for sure but needs an attenuator desperately to work properly even with a booster. Maybe the fact that you're forced to involve the power amp by crancking it in order to have more gain and mix the two channels is the magic formula for Piece of Mind.
@metalinsights96648 ай бұрын
@@lovecraftmusic8717 There's something different about these amps that goes beyond what can be explained by the effect of driving the power stage. For one, they have less top end than JCM800-style amps (which is pretty main lines of amps after JCM800, including, and especially, the DSL, which has a lot of treble that can, however, be dialed out). Second, they have excellent single note definition. If you listen to Maiden's original version of "Sanctuary" with Paul DiAnno, you can hear the first two strings ring out clearly in the mix, which is a good example of that clarity. And lastly, these amps manage to sound overdriven without what I would describe as buzz between notes and chords. They just sound really clean and tame, but also overdriven. The bit that Anthony plays in the intro to his new video is a good example. You get the drive but without the noise part, which is another thing that stands out about the tone on Piece of Mind (e.g., the intros to "Still Life" and "To Tame a Land"). For some reason, these amps have all the good stuff associated with overdrive, but none of the disadvantages, which results in such a controlled heaviness. I also like how incisive the midrange is. Very compact, with a tight, percussive low end, which these amps don't seem to have much of, but that must also be why they sit so well in a mix
@metalinsights96648 ай бұрын
@@lovecraftmusic8717 One more thing. In the "Flight of Icarus" video, where you can see the four-hole JCM800s that Adrian is playing, it shows that he is plugged into the high treble channel, with no jumpering of the two channels. Perhaps that explains that bright nature of the tone on Piece of Mind (At least I always perceived it as very present and bright, in a good way. Others may disagree.)
@lovecraftmusic87178 ай бұрын
@@metalinsights9664 corious... For me Piece of Mind has always been a dark warm tone...Powerslave is bright/clear/neutral/balanced by comparison.
@metalinsights96648 ай бұрын
@@lovecraftmusic8717 I agree. Powerslave is very compact, more ambient, whereas Piece of Mind is warmer and thicker. I associate Piece of Mind with "bright" because of the tight low-end. For example, if you listen to "Where Eagles Dare," the palm-muted pedal notes on the main riff should normally be very heavy, especially with two guitars, but they are not even audible on the album. Another good example is the low-E palm-muted pedal note in the chorus of "Die With Your Boots On." Those palm-mutes should be very heavy sounding, but they are not even audible. I am not sure how Maiden pulled that off, but somehow the power chords is all you can hear, whereas the palm-muted root notes are so inaudible that it is not clear whether they are there at all. This is one of those things that makes Piece of Mind a cut above the rest. Maiden's heaviness is so subtle and classy, that they avoid solutions that any other band would think is an obvious choice. If you read reviews of Piece of Mind, you'll often hear the complaint that it doesn't have enough low end. Which is not true, as the perception of missing low end is there because the guitars are so crisp and so well-seated in the mix, but all the complaining did have the result that the 2015 remaster of Piece of Mind got a serious boost to the low end, both on the guitars and the bass.

Beautiful "plexi" type, good job Marshall. I'm leaning towards the ST-20 JTM studio series, because I prefer clean tones, but that one is awesome too. I've gotten the JTM-1 50 year anniversary one watter, and even it can get too loud if it's cranked, I use it with a less sensitive/efficient speaker(greenback) to keep the volume down in the sweet spot. If I want to play louder then I plug into the cab with an Avatar A25 (Celestion blue type). I'm amazed at how much of the JTM sound it gets, even with the little wonky power tube!

I bought the SC 2 years ago and now I also have the SV. This amp is a true time machine that takes you to the tones of the 70s and early 80s. I never had the opportunity to use an SLP100, but I imagine it must be very complicated to use it in rehearsals and small gigs, as the SV20 at the 5w position it is already extremely loud. : ) Still comparing the SV with the SC, I noticed that they have some points of similarity, but the SV seems to be more versatile for other styles, such as hard rock or pop, for example. I haven't had the chance yet but I would like to try the mini Jubilee. In some videos I could see that his EQ is very active, allowing everything from classic to modern tones. If you have the DSL, SC and now the SV, which one do you like best? Once again, thank you for sharing your experiences! Congratulations on making rich content!

@mourningleaves8 ай бұрын
Great tones! The volumes for each channel are more like gain controls than master volumes. Both in where they are placed in the circuit, and how they act. Full volume is reached very low on the dial, usually like 2 or 3, and from that point, they just add distortion. If you don’t jumper the channels and push the brilliant channel to 9 or 10, it mellows out and becomes THE classic sound. And keep the bass low, like 0

So i bought this same amp new after watching many videos and everyone seemed to love this amp. Well this was a lesson for me and i went against my better judgment and bought without ever playing one personally. I did not like this amp. I didn't like for starters the cleans, yeah thats right the cleans sucked! The overdriven tones were brash and brittle sounding with no bass or ump that it needed no matter the settings i tried. I traded this amp after trying for a month to like it. I built from scratch a 30 watt plexi - my second from scratch at this time. I love this amp i built! Try a amp out before buying one, that was a lesson for me that everyone should follow. This of course is just my opinion and you will have yours.

I feel a loop in a non master volume amp like a Plexi is a waste of time. Dave Friedman is intentionally not putting a loop in his upcoming Plexi style amp. Mostly because it will just make things worse. Your experiments seem to match that notion. Similar amps like the EHX Mig50 don’t have loops either, but I think that’s a good thing. Only bummer about these style amps is home players gotta run into a load box or use a Fryette powerstation to get the gain at a volume level that does not piss everyone around you off.
