I am 78 and I am using my 3rd 1987. I bought my first in1971. Being full time doing original material both in America and the UK I sold the first 2 when twice I needed airfare. I literally bought a Friedman IR-X days ago. I am getting it dialed into a close proximity of the my PLEXI. I got it to do the job of a modeler. I have many small health issues. The worse 2 are fatigue and slow healing from the inevitable small injuries from being my own roadie. I will keep my PLEXI. there may be the odd gig over the year where it is feasible to use it.

This is also by far my favorite amp. I did this Thin Lizzy thing years ago w/ some friends in LA. I borrowed a 1987x that was modded by a company called Splawn from Virginia, USA which featured an extra gain stage & push/pull knob in one of the input spots to engage it (built in stompbox), which I didn't even need. I literally EQ'd it backstage by eye in a few seconds & naturally being the amp that it is, it was perfect once on stage and cranked!! Rock ensued, and a good time had by all. It gives me anxiety thinking of how SOFT this world is now that people run and cry at the sound of an amp cranked to painful levels hahaha.....I thought this was rock n roll, not patty cake!!! Keep shredding, Elmo. You rule ✌️🤘

Unfortunately, the Marshall 1987X is pretty expensive in the USA. So, am usually using ether my 65 Amps Whiskey, 65 Amps Lil Whiskey, or my Friedman Dirty Shirley Mini. All have the Friedman Buffered Effects Loop, which I love. I was interested in trying out a JHS Black Box, but for now I am relying on a Catalinbread Reverb's Volume Control, which is always active if in Buffered Mode. The 65 Amps both only have a master volume for their dirt channel, so I wanted a way to control both channels' volumes on the fly while playing at a gig.

I analysed the loop circuit and now I understang how this can work without PPIMV: Zener diodes! This is simillar to the famous 80's Jose master volume. There is two pair, one before the opamp loop out (yes oamps...) and one pair after. Quite clever! Twin inverted zeners breakup simetricaly, very similar the tube phase inverter distortion. So you can have distortion before or after the loop. It is also the reason the little black amp(plain passive voltage divider pot) sound so good... Kind of ironic to get a cool vintage style tube amp and the magic is solid state😅 Isn't it also the case for the Silver Jubilee 🤔
@MrPolevaulterАй бұрын
Thanks for the explanation. Not sure about the Silver Jubilee.
@hoosierdaddy2308Ай бұрын
Great info and videos sir. Yeah, I haven't owned one, but I have played thru one. I love the DSL 40 which has the master volume. The volume box you're using just turns down the power amp by bypassing the preamp of course using the loop, but you don't get the compression and sag or whatever people call it with the power amp. I've had many different tube amps, and the preamp of course shapes your tone, but the power amp gives you that creamy Gary Moore ( probably spelled his last name wrong ) tone which I love because of the sustain and harmonics, etc. I grew up in a time where people like Ted Nugent used hollow body Jazz guitars ( Gibson Byrdland ) to play loud loud Fender amps or later Marshalls and he also used Peavey 5150s later . He sounded best though I think on his first couple albums with loud fully cranked Fenders which had loads of headroom and you had to turn them all the way up to get distortion. 😂... Amps and guns are the reason my ears just balance my face because they shure don't help me hear anymore. 😂 at the Tender age of 63. 😂 I used to be young and handsome. Now I'm just handsome. 😂 Great video my friend. Great channel. Your playing is top notch. Have you ever jammed with Teemu or however you spell his name with Megadeth? That guy can really really play❤.. He's like a machine man ❤. You can tell he really really has put in the time ❤ The tone on those amps is just stellar. Absolutely great man ❤.... Be well my friend and stay warm up there in Viking land my brother. ❤

I agree - best rock amp ever made. The only problem is the lack of headroom - there’s no way to boost the amp for solo’s, as it runs out of headroom past 2 on the Volume. I need to use my Boss TAE with 1987’s, just to be able to get a volume boost for solo’s. First world problems, of course 😊

I think there is some substance to your argument. A 50W generally sound better then a 100W when it comes to tone, a 100W+ is more about power. Also i agree on the FX loop, it is essential for my setup. Another thing to understand is a higher wattage amp gives more headroom, turning upp an amp with less wattage will just sound like a smaller amp that’s loud.

Elmo you're not the only one "for me." I suppose I will have to go to a store and just see about me. I have the 100 one. The prices have come way down though lately. Marshall went to crazytime prices getting greedy around COVID fiascos. Some other cool dudes like you like this 87x too. I see the effects loop is what it has. So can you put volume box. What is really good in the front of the amp then if your doing all the reverb delay and v box. I have heard you do about that v box before. It must be good if your talking about it agian. I think the v box is digital and so is the effects loop, so it should be a perfect form factor match and that is why it works so well. Using a analog v box like a big expensive one probabld does not sound good but that little digital v box is a perfect form factor match. I will be shopping around for a 87x and just get one to check out. I bet used I can get one somewhere with smoking hot deal. Thank you for your level headed cool videos with great practical information for us everday musicans and dreamers. There is nothing quite like a plexi jacked up. @TheMartinmedАй бұрын
Sorry this is very strange... Its ok for you, you like to use it like this. But if you like to use "classic" plexi overdriven sound, you need to overdrive preamp, and poweramo to. Only way is very loud .. If you reduce volume pre input, you lost all... And need pelals for distortion. And dont need plexi I think. Did I miss something? Only way is power brake, if dont play stadiums only.. 2nd thing - in this crank setup, effect loop is pre power amp. So reverbs delays pre this distortion. Maybe its ok, but its good to know and test it and play with it.
@makinganoise6028Ай бұрын
Id agree with you, too loud for most gigs, my 2nd valve amp was a modded superbass, 100 watt, thing was a weapon, with metalzone in the front, only gigged it, sold it on when moved on, that was the 1980's, could crank up and had roadies, nowadays, mainly gig a katana 100, rarely go past 50 Watts, and can rock up carrying 2 guitars and the amp straight from the Car on one trip, I can could see the one you have there being a good studio choice, and a no fuss option amp for gigging, but the 20 probably loud enough, get 2 and have a dirty/clean combo

Volume attenuation before the power amp seems pointless. The reason you want volume from a Marshall is so you can crank the power tubes and get them to distort. Using the Little Black Amp method of volume control, you are never going to achieve that. Driving the pre-amp sounds bad.

With our without the loop, a 1987x is built a LOT more reliably, and in a more service-friendly manner, than the 20W SV20. No PCB mounted power tubes. And no board mounted pots. Might seem minor, but these are consistent failure points in all tube amps. And they are much more expensive to service and/or repair than their flying-lead equivalents.
