Yeah it is an amazing amp. I think you just have to work it differently to a normal Marshall. I have to admit, it was lost on me to start with, but now I absolutely love it.

Happy to hear you demonstrate the beautiful cleans that the Vintage Modern is capable of. I have a 2266 myself, and I really like the cleans. The master volume fairly high, cut the mids, the body control almost off and the detail around 3-4, and off you go!

I love hearing how people use their amps. I used to have a Vintage Modern but I just didn't get it... actually I did that with the silver jubilee too. The VM is such an amazing amp and proves you should always read the booklet ;)

Marshall vintage modern is awesome. I own the2466 100.watt which to me gives a little more clean headroom on the HDR setting. That amp is really good at using the volume and tone knobs on your guitar. Great video guys! I appreciate all your help and hard work!

All of these amps are master volume amps and can get low to medium gain bordering on high gain at bedroom levels ., yes it won’t be the same as cranking the master volume and getting the power amp cooking but it certainly does a great job at lower volumes

Nice video guys! Glad to see you’re enjoying the new place. As for the amps, I was surprised about the Vintage Modern. It sounds great, and for some reason they’ve got a bad rap. You should try an Astoria Custom, I think it sits somewhere between the cleanish-crunch sounds of the Vintage Modern and the SLP/JCM800. I get very nice full bodied cleans and crunch out of it. But when it comes to melt-your-face overdrive à la Slash, nothing beats the Jubilee...
@ZillaCabs
@ZillaCabs 4 жыл бұрын
They get a bad rap because dumbasses like me don't read the manual and then say they prefer their existing amp ;) I had one and sold it because I just didn't like it... I would say I borderline hated it (I got one cheap so took a punt). As soon as Joe showed me how to use it it became instantly clear how good the amp is. I have had a couple of people try and turn me on to the Astoria, I'd love to get one in but they are quite hard to find these days and hold their money really good too. You've made some really good points here!
@javiermp81
@javiermp81 4 жыл бұрын
🤣 well who reads manuals anyway... and yeah the Astorias are somewhat difficult to find cheap. And they were also kind of misunderstood, not fitting into the stereotypical Marshall design, maybe in a similar way as the Vintage Modern. Plus Marshall overplayed their hand with the crazy pricing.

Thanks for another great vid, guys! You really impress me, keep 'em coming! For my ears, the Silver Jubilee quite surprisingly (usually like the plexi or 800 more) wins all around here with its full, dynamic yet well defined tone. The VM on the other hand was quite a disappointment on crunch, where the tone seemed a little too flat and tinny IMO, much better with high gain though.

I think the VM sounded best in all scenarios. Beautiful cleans, great mid range rock tones with great string separation, and a great modern pushed tone. Strangely i own a 50watt VM but never really got on with it tbh, i much prefer my Dsl1hr 😂 The SJ sounded tinny, thin and brittle and the SLP just sounded like a muddy flubby mess.
@ZillaCabs
@ZillaCabs 4 жыл бұрын
I can see how the VM comes across as winning for sure. Personally I would pull the bass back a little on the JCM800 for my tastes and the SJ has a certain amount of cut/aggression. I think they are both really nice amps but I can see how you prefer the VM.

virtually no guitarist needs an amp that large or that powerful, Marshall's 20 watt studio series is the answer to someone wanting these tones in modern settings
@ZillaCabs
@ZillaCabs 3 жыл бұрын
Yeah that is true, that said the jubilee goes down to 25 watts. The Super Lead is a pain for its volume but does really sound great and the Vintage Modern is more manageable. A lot of the amps we have here are 50 watts plus but that tends to be because that's what they used to make and the amps sound really good... maybe not practical but we are fortunate in that we can play really loud here... and you;re right, 20 watts is more than enough. Thanks for watching.

@@ZillaCabs don't be harsh on yourself, unlike violins and piano, guitar amps allow too many options, which means often screwing up the tone. Especially reverb (it sucks on every amp), also on the Vintage modern if you engage the mid boost, tone will be screwd.
@voxpathfinder15r
@voxpathfinder15r 4 жыл бұрын
Lots of people panned the vintage modern Amps. Probably didn’t understand it was a Marshall super lead with the channel’s jumped and the blend knob dictating how much of each channel. The modern was kicking in an extra gain stage similar to a jcm800 amp

Great video. Wish I could play and shake the roof, or even just rattle the windows a bit - I play at home through a Marshall 50th Anniversary DSL 1 watt amp and my neighbours complain if I put our more than 75 db. However, not a bad sound from any of these 3 Marshalls. My favourite was, probably, the Silver J, I particularly preferred the cleans and thought they were a bit more rounded than with the Vintage Modern. That said, that Super Lead is a monstrous beast and I can only image what it's like to play through that. I'm very interested in what you can do with these amps with a good attenuator. Would also be good to hear some driven tones from that Strat.
@ZillaCabs
@ZillaCabs 4 жыл бұрын
haha yeah, those volumes are so impractical. This is the first time in my life I've been able to lift the volume that high (in my own place anyway) and as good as they sound they are just so impractical like that... driven tones on a strat would be great. Joe's strat sounds so good, I love that guitar, and he plays well too... oh and you are one step a head of us... we are doing a video on attenuated SL later today ;)

Not sold on load attenuators, 50% of the cranked sound has to do with the fletcher-Munson curves, and the nonlinearity of speaker cone breakup. Easier to focus on more modern low wattage amps and let the past be the past - sure it was glorious but people busted up their eardrums doing it
@ZillaCabs
@ZillaCabs 4 жыл бұрын
Yeah I get that for sure, low powered amps can be a lot more practical (lighter and cheaper too mostly) but I still think there is something about these amps cranked up.
