I really love the authenticity and simplicity of your videos. That's exactly what I have been looking for cause I am thinking about going to Medellin to learn Spanish &/or teach English and I literally wanted to see how it is to just walk around and what the vibe is. You are immersing your viewers in the experience of exploring the Medellin and I think that's pretty unique. You are awesome, this is extremely helpful, keep up the great work

hey Marshall, I've been living in Sabaneta and Poblado since Nov. I moved from living in Tacoma. Also, my son graduated from Tacoma School of the Arts. Like you, he's a singer song writer. his Name is Jesse Fontenot. I'm sure you figured out there is several English schools in Poblado and the city. Last thing, I appreciate your efforts with sharing your experience here in Colombia. there are so many misconception about the country. You're doing great. ciao!

Great videos, Marshall. I found El Poblado to be very expensive, even the street food (of course in relation to other places in Medellin). Did you ever make your way to neighbourhoods like Belen?
@Marshall.Powell8 жыл бұрын
+Dan Markowski i looked at a room for rent in belen but didnt really explore much. and yea as far as prices go el poblado was pretty expensive. do you have experience in the smaller neighborhoods like belen?
@danm74498 жыл бұрын
Belen was pretty working class, but met a few good friends out there as I was staying with a friend that lived there. Before that I had stayed in Laureles (I agree...that is a nice and enjoyable neighbourhood within decent walking distance of Estadio (and the Metro). We'd go to El Poblado for a nice night out hanging in the park drinking rum from the liquor store beside the woman that sells those chicken skewers. That was extremely cheap in relation to the clubs, etc in the area, but I did notice that even the prices for food in the comidas in the area were noticeably higher than other areas. Totally worth checking it out though! Your blogs are awesome, Marshall, and definitely more grounded than other ones I've seen (I'm still blown away that you took a local bus to Cartegena rather than a flight from Rio Negro...nicely done!). It's a treat watching and sharing your videos! Thanks!

hello! I am in medellin right now. I prefer my air bnb in Laureles as opposed to the poblado area. I go to dancefree in poblado for classes and don't like the tourist scene, especially since I want to improve my Spanish as well.

You’re spending over six dollars a day just for breakfast. That’s pretty high test stuff. It’s mostly beans rice and coffee. At least in Mexico they don’t overcharge for stuff like that. I’d be lucky to spend six dollars a day for all meals plus snacks.

Marshall, I'm an American from Philly traveling briefly (12 days) in Colombia and heading to Medellin tomorrow for 4 days. My Spanish isn't nearly as good as I thought before I left the US, and I want to spend a portion of my time in Medellin getting practice. Hey man - I found an English school you may be interested in. It's called "Speak English With Me! (Academia de Ingles)" and it's in Envigado. I found it on google maps. Also, I'm looking to travel to Medellin for 4 or 5 weeks. I know El Poblado is the most common spot westerners go, but I've heard it's a bit too touristy. I speak a bit of spanish but I'm not yet fluent. Would Laureles or Envigado be good choices? Or are they a tad too dangerous for a single foreighner that doesn't speak spanish fluently? My goals are to practice my spanish, network with other digital nomads, and have a good time. Let me know man. Love the Vlogs! -Owen

Not sure if this has been addressed in the previous comments but the main reason that more English is spoken in Cartegena is because it is the Caribbean and it has a long history of people coming and going to Jamaica, Trinidad, the U.S etc etc. As you will notice there is a much larger black population and the same is true up the entire Caribbean coast of Central America. There are old English speaking communities in Panama, Costa Rica, Nicaragua etc. It of course has a lot to do with tourism but many people there may be speaking English in their homes. English is the older language for some people there so they will talk to the kids in English and they will answer in Spanish. The English is a patois so it sound like a Jamaican accent to you and me but it is different. In Panama they call it Guari Guari and it has English, Spanish, and even some native dialect thrown in.

I see you have left Medellin since.... no luck on finding a job? Why did you leave to Armenia? Any luck for me when I go next week to Medellin?
@Marshall.Powell8 жыл бұрын
i left to armenia because i wanted to try something else and i had heard about the beautiful coffee region of colombia (armenia, pereira, manizales). to be honest i didnt end up looking too hard for work in medellin. i got a little discouraged and started focusing on other things. that being said i think there are plenty of opportunities to teach english in medellin. good luck.

the guys with the dog and the man with glasses who gave directions show the pronounced contrast of the stamp of class in Colombia society. It is likely both groups can live side by side in the same city, who pass in the street and have not have any reason for contact. Definitely clothes are used to show be interpreted by others, certain in levels of one's social as a way of self-identifying with the class they belong to as well as separating themselves in a social context to whom has permission to interact with them.

You would say that El Poblado is to many gringos? because i plan going medellin in June to speak and see paisas etc
@Marshall.Powell8 жыл бұрын
el poblado certainly has the most gringos and is the most touristy of all areas in medellin, but it is still very much a colombian city and you will talk to pretty much only colombians unless you are in parque lleras, the park i am in in this video. i wouldnt miss out on el poblado when coming to medellin
@RiskyTingz088 жыл бұрын
Thanks, so you would think to stop at this part of Medellin? for 2-3 weeks
@Marshall.Powell8 жыл бұрын
RiskyTingz08 i spent a week in poblado and found that to be enough time to see everything. the good part is that all of medellin is connected with their metro system. so no matter what part of medellin you are in, you are only a $0.70 metro ride away from el poblado
