Watch these kids being tempted with marshmallows as they go through the "marshmallow test". Like the one originally designed by Walter Mischel (en.wikipedia.org/wiki/Marshmal....
And Dr David Walsh has an important message for parents to keep in mind.
Watch more kids' videos here: wcco.com/specialreports/marshm...
In fact you can run a marshmallow test yourself - it's a fun and educational thing to do with small kids :) There are some homemade videos already available on KZbin.
Adult shopaholics should watch this with extra attention :)

This test requires an authority figure. It's not a test of self-control, but obedience and gullibility. It would be interesting to see the correlation between not eating the marshmallow, and being scammed later. It bears noting that Western society is based on unsustainable debt, access to cheap foreign energy sources, pollution, and cheap foreign labor. How long will this go on? Not much longer, I think. "Success" in that society is probably not a marker for success generally.

Such a cute experiment :) I actually think I would have done well at this as a kid. According to my mother, I had a freakish amount of self-control as a child. Too bad that quality hasn't stuck around, lol.

@abbyratsolee , only the kid who disassembled his marshmallow truly knew the quality of the marshmallow. For all the rest knew, it might have been stale. And none of them actually knew that another one was coming.

"so says the test but using it on little kids wont work" But it DOES work. The test they are talking was conducted at Standard in the 60s. The followed the kids into adulthood, and found that those who showed better impulse control in the childhood test were more successful in a wide range of metrics (including scoring 200 points higher on their SATs).

This experience tells you that the success you are. It was destined for you . You do not have to be arrogant and brag about what has been destined for you, meaning that you have the tools for success since birth This, in my opinion, has some validity. As for what is true

From the cradle we are endowed with value laden labels, described as either good or bad (naughty), an angelic child or a little devil, depending on our demeanor and behaviour and how that is interpreted by those who bestow the labels, without consideration of the surrounding issues, of why we are the way we are or do the things we do, nor the effect that such attitudes and labeling has upon the behaviour it seeks to label, and upon the psyche.

WTF? None of those children were told "No". They were given a choice. Why does the study assume that the children who either felt they were expected to wait for a 'reward' (manipulative) or decided they'd prefer two rather than one were acting in a morally superior way to those who chose to eat the marshmallow in front of them?

That is very true. In Japan i.e. there are 330ml bottles of coke and 500ml bottles of coke. Both cost the same. Westerners often say that this is stupid because everybody would take the one with more coke in it, however, in reality, if you dont need more than 330ml, then you dont have to take 500. Our society just makes it look as if more is always better....but even I think that there is truth in that statement too.

@knucklez92 Like the video says, the adults SET THE limit, it's up to the kid to challenge themselves. My parents never really taught me discipline or anything but I would restrain myself with all my might, whatever it was. It was part of my genetics to be self controlled. In my case, I had to set my own limits and challenge them. My parents were too busy to have anything insightful to teach me

I don't like to see tests with children, where the person/s doing the testing have a preconceived idea about the rationale children work with. This happens in our everyday interactions with children. The arbitrary (usually value laden) attribution of rationale to a child's behaviour rather than taking the time to learn from the child what their rationale is. By doing so we're molding children in the cast we set for them, demonstrating the cast of thinking we ourselves are set in.
