The way the story of “Be Kind” plays out is that Halsey is talking about a romantic interest. And the said individual has been in a tumultuous relationship(s) in the past, so he has issues in terms of opening up to her. Moreover he is depicted as the type who is emotionally-defensive, ready to snap every time he feels that he is offended. So basically, what Halsey is trying to tell him is that now he is in a romance with someone who truly cares for him. And he doesn’t have to adopt the kind of mentality in which he is afraid to be vulnerable. Instead she presents herself as being “the one”, as in his romantic needs personified. And accordingly, she is entreating him to fully open his heart to her. So conclusively, it can be deemed that the person she is singing to is a sensitive individual. But with that being established, she wants him to know that she cares for him to the point that she will not exploit that vulnerability. And as for the titular statement, although it is never mentioned in the song, the way it would logically relate to the narrative is that she is imparting these words onto him. In other words, instead of getting violently emotional when he feels offended, she is telling him to rather “be kind”. Like the lyrics; “I don't know why you hide from the one, and close your eyes to the one, mess up and lie to the one that you love. When you know you can cry to the one, always confide in the one, you can be kind to the one that you love”. She’s saying for him to drop his defensive barriers and open up, when he’s sad or needs to talk he should talk to her, not close up.

The way the story of “Be Kind” plays out is that Halsey is talking about a romantic interest. And the said individual has been in a tumultuous relationship(s) in the past, so he/she has issues in terms of opening up to her. Moreover he/she is depicted as the type who is emotionally-defensive, ready to snap every time he/she feels that they are offended. So basically, what Halsey is trying to tell them is that now he/she is in a romance with someone who truly cares for them. And that they doesn’t have to adopt the kind of mentality in which they are afraid to be vulnerable. Instead she presents herself as being “the one”, as in his romantic needs personified. And accordingly, she is entreating him/her to fully open their heart to her. So conclusively, it can be deemed that the person she is singing to is a sensitive individual. But with that being established, she wants him/her to know that she cares for him/her to the point that she will not exploit that vulnerability. And as for the titular statement, although it is never mentioned in the song, the way it would logically relate to the narrative is that she is imparting these words onto him/her. In other words, instead of getting violently emotional when he feels offended, she is telling them to rather “be kind”. Like the lyrics; “I don't know why you hide from the one, and close your eyes to the one, mess up and lie to the one that you love. When you know you can cry to the one, always confide in the one, you can be kind to the one that you love”. She’s saying for them to drop his defensive barriers and open up, when he/she’s sad or needs to talk they should talk to her, not close up.

This really reminds me of going through the ups and downs of being with someone with a severe mental health challenge. It actually makes me emotional thinking of my own personal experience. One moment you're on top of the world and the next they're so down the dark hole of their sadness that they don't even see you, or they don't realize that they say something hurtful until the next day when their head is clear, or them shutting you out because they don't want you to see them broken. It's like two different people demanding control of one mind. You see the pain it causes them, but it takes a toll on you too. It's an uphill battle and it's unpredictable but one thing is known--you love each other for better or worse and giving up isn't an option. Knowing that there is light at the end of the tunnel. That feeling of fighting all their demons alongside them. The feeling of knowing you did the right thing sticking by their side and not giving up when they recover and life is beautiful again. How we didn't think we could make it through one more day in the darkness but we, and they, overcame it and are stronger for it.
