Honestly feel like constant nerfs really ruined this character. She got nerfed in several patches and unlike a lot of other top tiers her nerfs were usually pretty substantial, taking away conversions outright or making them much harder to do, damaging her ability to pressure shields and already lackluster oos. I know people didn't like prepatch ZSS but that character was strong, explosive. ZSS as she is now a lot of characters do what she does better, she struggles with consistency, and has to play a certain way that most people just don't like. It feels like a lot of creativity people could have with the character was ripped away and as both a Metroid fan and someone who's been trying to main her it's really frustrating Worst thing is that the damage is probably done, Nintendo doesn't usually take away nerfs. I wish she had been approached more like Joker/Peach/Wolf where they more or less kept their combos and such, they just got little changes to make them less overbearing. The nerfs she got really messed her up and to me it's sad

ZSS also seemed to get hit harder by the DLC additions than most character, albeit not as bad as say Peach. Like Fox, Diddy, Sheik all benefitted from the DLC as they tended to have winning matchups vs them. ZSS losing badly to Aegis, Joker is not good for the character

This is the biggest thing I've noticed. Marss used to be (and still is but...) so explosive and just overpowered everyone it was so fun to watch. Now his neutral is completely changed because zair became his only real shield pressure. I think he's forced to go for way more grabs (to condition shield and jumping) than a character like zss should be with the tether and he gets punished really hard for it at the top level of competition.

I was just talking to myself about this actually lol, ZSS used to be a character that could control the pace of the game to two EXTREMES. She could, and still can, slow the pace to a crawl and just keep you out and never be in w bad situation because she has one of the best disengaging options in the game with flip jump. But then she would also turn around and completely change the pace and just out frame data everybody because she was that privileged. Now, after having her ability to aggress as hard nerfed, she still has her insanely strong camping, but unlike other campy characters, she doesn’t just shit out damage. Like Sonic, Steve, G&W, Snake, Samus… those characters just shit out damage passively with their camping so when they get w lead they have at least some margin of error to fall back on. ZSS doesn’t really do that as well as the other campy characters. And on top of that, she has an even worse get off me tool than all of the characters I mentioned before.

With regards to sonic, I think the community nerfed sonic with pure hate. If you play sonic optimally(time out like your life depends on it) the community basically wants you dead so their is that pressure to not try to time out every game. I think ZSS has always been a very overrated character and the nerfs really hurt the thing that made her actually good. Nearly all of her mileage comes from people making mistakes and in this game anyone playing a high tier character with a sword or good oos options almost immediately has the advantage over her. Having the best mobility in the game doesn't mean anything if you can't safely apply pressure. That's not even getting into the issues she has dealing with characters that are small, just straight up you have to earn everything you get with ZSS save for a occasional bury stock which you might get lucky with.

I started playing her in brawl and she was like my third main, she became my number one man and smash 4 no one else was even close as far as play time goes, loved her to death there. And man... In this game she's literally the only character I played but I was not enjoying the game with her and I was about to drop the whole game but then they announced my boy so that's why I am and I haven't touched her since aegis came out and they Nerfed her, especially coming from guilty gear where if they take something they gave you something else to work with she just lost things and it just wasn't fun to play with... Like I could be fine with her not having a combo throat if she had to throw that always gave it that chase or some type of 50/50 but she doesn't have that. While I do think that ZSS nerfs will have a big impact on her play style I wouldn’t count out explosive sets and winning majors just yet. Marss still has explosive sets because ZSS is still a very fast paced character. If you want proof of this just look to Marss vs Light at Smashcon or Marss vs Goblin at LTC. Also, I am pretty confident that Marss will be able to still win majors with her as he has gotten a third place at LTC and has top eighted at all of his tournaments except for riptide (please correct me if I’m wrong but I can’t recall any others). So yeah, Marss should be able to win some majors but he most probably won’t be the top 3 player that we knew at Genesis 7 unfortunately.

However I do think it takes a very particular person to play her, she has a very unique and sometimes unintiutive moveset, but if you can master her she is a great character. top tier being top 25, my man I do think that there's one aspect I don't think you really went into *that* much regarding zss, which is in part why I still think she's around top 15 at worst: the mental game. Her hurtbox being so skinny, with the movement tools and what else you've mentioned regarding pinning her down, I think massively makes up for her nerfs in terms of meta relevance. People on average will become much more frustrated with her playstyle and movement tools, leading to more impulsive or aggressive options in which ZSS can still bait and punish extremely well, even post nerf. Very much a case of "I annoy you in neutral until you do something stupid, then I'll punish that with a burst that does good damage / puts you into disadvantage, or possibly kills". Sure, it's not the same playstyle as other characters per se, and that playstyle might not click with everyone, and that's fine. But I do think that is one of the reasons why she really won't ever lose full relevance in the game's meta. It's also why I think sonic is in part higher than how you've normally rated them on average, too (not top 5 or top 15 like some people have suggested, but more in the top 25-30 range). Still, those nerfs did have pretty notable impacts in certain matchups, and I definitely agree that gnw does a lot better against zss than before. I still think it's -1 just because gnw tends to have trouble approaching zss and then tries to play more defensively, only for zss to benefit by being anti-camping, but that's definitely better than how it was prior.

So for Marrs the character is trash but truly that's a niche case scenario, most people playing her aren't on his level anyways & she's still better than the majority of the roster imo.

I agree. I main ZSS (see my vids on my channel) and I believe the last nerfs killed her. She cannot do up air into up air into up B anymore unless opponent doesn't DI well. Nair was her best move before the nerfs (it was never down B) but now nair is hardly a safe move. She's a mid high tier at best.

Yeah, I play her, and like legitimately half the time my moves just don't work. People fall out of up smash, up b, side b, up tilt, forward smash, fair, and dair (the landing hit box). All that and sometimes landing flip jump does absolutely nothing for some reason. I spend so much time getting punished for hitting my moves. It's ridiculous.

Kirby can do so much shit against zss. Downtilt means that she can't do any falling aerials (besides dair but that's pretty reactable), it's really hard to zair kirby, she can't juggle kirby because you can just jump really high above the ledge and final cutter to ledge completely safely, it's hard to camp because it's so hard for her to safely hit kirby, and kirby gets so much out of one opening. If you're a losing mu to kirby, you're in trouble.

@@lokks2130 zss can't punish kirby's openings. He's too small and all his approach options have virtually zero lag. Dash attack hits her on the ground, and fair or final cutter catch her flip jump or her trying to jump away. If she tries to punish you with literally anything in the air, Kirby has a downtilt that allows him to low profile frame one and avoid all of her aerials. If she tries a grounded move, kirby has enough time to shield or spot dodge. The problem is that kirby has a few excellent approach options that she can't deal with, and running away every time you get a lead will allow kirby to hit her, if the kirby reads her camping option (which are limited and easy to pick up on over the span of a 7 minute match). And kirby gets a TON out of his openings. If you get grabbed at ledge at zero you're just kind of dead. If you shield on the ledge while kirby is holding it, you're dead at any percent. Kirby can keep you on ledge for a pretty decent amount of time, and he absolutely can exploit her recovery. He also just gets like 60% of a grab at 0 though 30. It's legitimately a weird yet difficult mu at top level.
