Extract of the 2016 Kennedy Center Honors show broadcast on CBS on 27 December 2016, when stars and colleagues paid tribute to the latest honoree, the legendary Argentinean pianist Martha Argerich.
Watch the actual conferment by President Barack Obama on 4 December 2016, and the pre-show red carpet interviews with Argerich, at:
• Martha Argerich at con...
(Apologies for the poor frame rate of the video, which was likely produced by a recording of the CBS livestream via screen capture.)

A joy to watch Martha gathering the affection of Yuja, Domingo, Barenboim and Perlman, and high honors from America that she utterly deserves. Martha Argerich is one of the few true international artists of immeasurable regard.

I am very sorry to disagree. Martha’s gifts are innumerable. Yes, her technique, her motor skills are dazzling. No doubt. I am not alone in listening to the depth of her musical intelligence that brings order to musical feelings and emotions. Her vibrant presence is as if I am hearing her play the war horses of the keyboard for the first time. And then hearing her play the same piece again as if for the first time, discovering new contrasts and lines of continuity. It’s her musical intelligence and spontaneity; her risk taking in the moment that comes out as if practiced countless times before that enthralls and enchants me. I find a touch Plato’s Divine Madness in her performances. 🙏🙏🙏

@@jtt306 obviously her musicality is beyond amazing, but they could have gone with a montage of pieces maybe her Prok 3, some Chopin or the Schuman concerto. Plus they seemed to say obvious things that sure are true but don't go deep into what it is the soul of Martha Argerich.

She’s a wonder of course, but she did not deserve this award, as she has performed so infrequently in the U.S. I think she herself admits this. A far more deserving pianist of equal stature as Martha to have received this award would be Alicia de Larrocha, who DID perform so frequently in the U.S., in recital, with orchestra and in chamber music…even if the honor had to be awarded posthumously. But this award ceremony was just short of schmaltz…as with the appearance of Yuga Wang playing some negligible trifle by Piazolla. Every Kennedy Center honor ceremony has been as cheap and tasteless as this one. I’m surprised that Martha agreed to be part of it.
