She won First Prize at this competition (at the age of 24). She also won The Polish Radio prize for the best performance of the mazurkas. In the previous competition five years earlier the First prize was taken by Pollini

@@agamaz5650 l agree by a long long SHOT. Martha has a great technique, Pollini has everything!!!! He is controlled. Argerich gets carried away by her superlative technique and the music deteriorates. We must remember that her being physically beautiful and very erotic looking, she undeservedly won the Chopin competition. I would not want to complete against a beautiful sexy woman because I would not have the slightest chance of being treated fairly.

@@zuhairbakdoud1360 that's not at all accurate. if you actually dedicate time to truly and honestly studying her playing, you will not only find how extremely well controlled her playing is, but how incredible her touch and articulation are. Her sound in general is what won her the competition - her looks and style just added onto how amazing her stage presence is.

Such natural grace and apparent simplicity in this wonderful work, one of the greatest mazurkas. These works are the interior of Chopin's memory of his own youth - in this his recollection is close to the end of his life. Argerich understands this completely.

It's because her performances are very masculine, which is very different from those male pianists who play on a feminine way, like Nelson Freire. Anyhow, I still prefer her because she is the best.

@OriginalBasaliskos "depth" in music can be a bit of a laughable notion anyway: utterly subjective, ill defined, based on a load of stuff that we have no real ability to vocalize. At the end of the day you see as much, or as little, in music as you want to. Some people will swear Martha has endless depth, some will call her utterly shallow. Which party is wrong?... both of them: for thinking that such a thing can be defined, and for having the vanity to assume that they "own" that definition!
