At the Conservatory where I trained (I was a piano major), one of my piano professors taught me and his students to use vibrato on the piano. He had trained at the Oberlin Conservatory, so I assumed that's where he learned it. But none of the other piano professors in the Keyboard Department where I trained taught the use of vibrato in piano playing. So it's certainly not limited to Marta Argerich and this is the first time I've seen Marta use vibrato in her playing. It was interesting to see that. I enjoyed the performance very much. Thank you for uploading it. UPDATED: For what it's worth, Marta is not using vibrato at that one place in this piece. I don't know why I didn't pick up on this before. I watched this performance the other night again. Vibrato is used throughout a piece -- just like string musicians use vibrato -- not just on one note. I only saw her do that "wobbling" of her finger on one note, and upon reflection I think it was just a mannerism at that place, having nothing to do with vibrato. Because, like I said, if a pianist is trained to use vibrato -- and even though it is how I was trained by one of my piano professors, I was never convinced about vibrato on the piano and I resisted the concept, and my former piano professor seem to think it was a lot of hokus-pokus. It also has nothing to do with a relaxed wrist or anything having to do with a pianist's form at the piano. That mannerism would have to be used throughout the piece for it to have any bearing on a relaxed wrist, not just in one measure in the piece. That doesn't do anything. And most pianist don't play with vibrato. Today I don't either. It's physically impossible to do vibrato on a piano because the hammer does not remain on the string it has struck for vibrato to be used. If it did, it would be more like the rarely-used sostenuto pedal works on the piano.

I played viola and piano as well, and the great tendency is to carry on with vibrate when playing piano, but my piano teacher use to become crazy about that. I wish I knew abouy Martha's "techinique" to calm down my teacher!!

Liszt's Piano Concerto No. 1 is a magnificent and virtuosic piece of classical music that showcases the genius of Hungarian composer Franz Liszt. Composed between 1830 and 1849, this concerto is renowned for its technical prowess, emotional depth, and captivating melodies. The concerto is structured in a traditional three-movement form. The opening movement, marked by its grandeur and dramatic flourishes, displays Liszt's mastery of the piano. It enchants the listener with its powerful orchestral themes and intricate piano passages, creating a thrilling musical journey.

Well one of them. There are many. And what specific criteria exactly does one use to determine "the greatest? Upon reflection, why does there have to be a "greatest pianist?" One of my piano professors where I trained -- who you've probably never heard of -- would be among "the greatest." She could have easily been a performance concert artist but she chose to go into academia and was head of the Keyboard Department until she retired. Her playing is phenomenal. Her playing is really no different than that of Marta's.

The audience are either musical snobs or morons for not giving Martha a standing ovation. I saw Andre Watts play Rachmaninov's 2nd Piano Concerto brilliantly and the same thing happened....everyone sat on their butts. On Broadway it's a requirement to give a standing ovation even if it's not deserved. The whole standing ovation thing drives me nuts!
