Martha Tilton (Benny Goodman) - Bei Mir Bist Du Schön (12-18-1937) Madhattan Room.
Benny Goodman 's songstress at the Hotel Pennsylvania.
"...Although her most popular recording with Goodman was And The Angels Sing her first session with the bandleader produced a recording of Bob White (What Cha Gonna Swing Tonight) that has a little more zip to it. However, her short vocal on a Goodman Quartet recording of Bei Mir Bist Du Schoen was her greatest Goodman jazz record. Although many jazz discographies do not list the session, the recording was waxed in December of 1937 in two parts, taking up 2 sides of a 78-RPM record. Trumpeter Ziggy Elman was added to the Quartet on side 2 along with Tilton's vocal..."

Martha Tilton was probably best known as Benny Goodman's songstress.
She was initially billed as the Sweetheart of Swing before becoming better known affectionately as The Liltin' Miss Tilton.
Goodman kept Martha busy and between October 1937 and the summer of 1939, he placed in excess of thirty recordings on the American Top 20 of which Martha's vocals were featured on 27 tracks including two chart-toppers.

just to clarify the song was originally writen in yiddish..Yiddish languge is derived from german so many people confuse the two . as far as the english words they were added later for a different audience. There are lyrics in different languges .but originally it was in yiddish and was written for a play I don't recall the name. I enjoy Martha Tilton's singing as well.

@xNiinaax99 I know what you mean. I never could dance but it makes me want to dance anyway (every time I hear it)! The one she does that REALLY gets my feet going is "A Little Jive Is Good For You". Thanks for the nice comment.

soulleskill yeah man I love it. Ziggy Elman plays what's in my opinion one of the best trumpet solos of all time.

@Malefiz1 Bei mir bist du schön is german why As written it is German; as sung it is Yiddish or "Yinglish" . Standard German would pronounce the ö as a sound similar to the 'ir"; in English "bird"; Yiddish treats a German ö like a German long e. Most English speakers do much the same with a sound that does not exist in English. The tune is obviously not German, which would not have been fashionable among Big Band performers in 1937, for obvious reasons; it is too bittersweet.

1937...vibes most likely was Lionel Hampton. 1945-ish Red Norvo spent some time with Benny Goodman. I can't find any suggestion there was another vibe player in 1937 with Benny, but I don't have the record.

I have no idea...I didn't even remember commenting on this :O)! Someone commented there was a Ziggy Elman trumpet solo. Oh, that was you. I think you know more about this recording than me. :O)

@Malefiz1 Maybe the title is a combination of Yiddish and German; title only. Words are almost all English, looks like the original score was Yiddish. Maybe the guys who purchased and rewrote the words and music liked to see a German name on it? I really don't care what language the title is, just as long as Martha Tilton is singing it. All corrections and clarifications welcome.

Of course it wasn't a "foreign importation," having been written by immigrants to the US, Shalom Secunda and Jacob Jacobs, for an American musical in Yiddish.

I always wondered about that. I listened to it over and over as a child, and sung before WW2..
