Dave is a pefect blend of solid technique & chops and ferocius attitude. Speedwise there are of course faster drummers, but attitude-wise few, if any, can match him. I haven’t seen anybody play Slayer songs better than him. Even though I enjoy drum videos & comments on youtube, very often they ignore this musical part of extreme playing and concentrate too much on speed and technique.
@keikofay98046 жыл бұрын
I have a bias toward his power style, also because as a drummer, the quality and sound of beat is key to metal bands' very sound and feel. No discredit to Bostaph, but Slayer is not nor will ever be a finessed or nuanced band so his contribution sounds very mismatched in the context of Slayer, to my ears. I think he has better hands than Lombardo, but without Lombardo, to me, they sound like they are missing the full lower end of their earlier sound spectrum. He was key to what I loved about their bottom-heavy dominant, churning sound. But that is but one opinion of a humble fan and musician.

Dave's drumming is precise and clean... Tight sounding actually. And I noticed on the album version of the slayer songs, his drumming sounds dry and crisp like there's no reverb on the mix. @@gary1chester What most don't get when they show me other metal drummers or jazz rock (Ginger!) is what others don't get about Bonham. They were pioneers in power and speed but it was their FEEL that made them the great drummers they were. You hear its them and FEEL it. I know who would want to play with. The precision of machines PLAYED with Intensity and control and timing. It's like Hendrix at his best that SOUND and full feel. No flouncing around yet full and alive. Everyone else sounds better when they play the drums and that is the secret like Ringo.

@vladdrakul78514 жыл бұрын
@@nixpix44 Yup. While they still managed the odd good SONG they never produced perfect Metal LP's like their first five. They broke Dave's heart and thus the unity in the band. You can't replace John Bonham in Zeppelin or equally Dave in Slayer and you can't replace Jeff either. Both Tom and Kerry while important to Slayer were the two clowns in the bunch. Dave and Jeff were the HEART and SOUL of Slayer. Tom the Voice and Kerry the blind ambition tool. Notice his PLASTIC chains. Kerry is the George Harrison of Slayer or like Bob Weir in the Dead. A good rhythm guitar player but an average songwriter and the bore in the band.
@paulbeltman69206 жыл бұрын
hi Marthyn, first of all I wanted to say I really, really like your 'drumteacher reacts' videos. They're top notch. Secondly : Dave rules. And third, and you didn't mention this in the video (maybe you didn't know): Dave is left handed. That's also the reason why his tomrolls sound so.... so.... well, so DAVE LOMBARDO ! It might sound stupid, but I asked him during a drumclinic why his rolls sound this way. He replied he didn't know why, or actually didn't understand that I find his drumrolls so fascinating. But a few minutes later he played some stuff, and suddenly he stopped, and told me (and the rest of the audience) he suddenly knew what the reason is: he's actually left handed, and he starts his tomrolls with his lefthand.... If you think about a normal tomroll from tom1 to tom 4 , you'll get Rlrl-Rlrl-Rlrl-RlRl. In his case it could be like this : LrlrL-rLrL-rlrL-rlr. (I think he'll leave out the last note and end with rL on the last tom.) And then think about what happens when he puts some snare hits in between. This explains a lot about his style of drumfills. And I find this fascinating. But aside his drumrolls, this man knows how to add swing and groove to the music like no other. Anyway, I'm looking forward to more of your videos ! Greetings, Paul.

Kerry is a douch as a person as is Tom sadly, as proven by their treatment of the best rock drummer bar John Bonham and we all know that. Nevertheless you are right to point to the Guitar Riff and Drum riff combo as the secret to Slayers great strengths. Lets face it though the guitar riff attack is both Kerry and Jeff's deadly double attack. Give the devil his due. Some bands have twin solos; ie Thin Lizzy, Eagles and Iron Maiden; Slayer has twin riffage with the odd freak out solo thrown in to freak out too! As you say, that's why I love them too. Killer riffage and some great tunes! Best band since Zeppelin, the Doors and early Sabbath. LP's III thru V are Zeppelin good, no filler! Also love KYUSS!

I'm really digging your videos, Marthyn, you do a great job analysing some incredible drummers. I wouldn't consider myself a drummer but your videos make me want to get something like what you're demonstrating on and play. I'm a guitarist, through and through, but I played steel drums in a college level band in high school, so I'm technically a semi-trained percussionist and have retained most of my technique. I used a German grip a lot, back then, so my snare work seems to favor that, as does my cymbal playing. I suppose I use an American grip, too, as well as some French grip with one hand... I'm the type of person who practices various techniques and uses what is applicable - something that I learned as a self taught guitarist/musician.

great video! a little addition, if you're a drummer - PLEASE READ THIS - one thing i think could be key to lombardo's sound is his extreme dexterity, if you look closer most of the time he leads double bass parts with his LEFT foot and he plays a lot of fills leading with his left hand also, look at that long hi hat roll at 5:35. i would really like your oppinion whether or not it is a major factor. virtually all drummers' right foot and hand are much stronger and more fluid than their left foot and hand, i'm sure lombardo is not an exception, so i reckon having your stronger limbs play the upbeats would make your fills sound really even pronounced and powerful. there's a video of slayer AOL sessions where the mic on his left bass drum didn't work, and you can really hear his right foot do the upbeats when they play raining blood.

One of few drummers you instantly recognize after hearing a few notes. It just sounds really tasty when he hits the drums. I thinkJeff from Slayer said that playing with Dave is like riding a train that's always on the verge of crashing.

Dave rules!!! Great breakdown of his technique. Love his old school, balls out power approach. Also, would love to see you do a reaction to Doug Bohn. Drummer for Suffocation on the Pierced From Within album. Here is a drum cam link from a few years ago of him playing one of the songs from that album. kzbin.info/www/bejne/gKuYlZ5tr5hlbLs

And Dave leaves that joker in the dust--Bostaph CANNOT play double kick! He's too sloppy and his feet are totally out of sync with each other. I fail to see why people think he's so good, here.

@@MaskedRiderChris all opinion but Bostaph is one of my favourite drummers second to Dave McClain

@@MaskedRiderChris his sloppiness came with age. In the 90s he was really at the same level of Lombardo. But then he got worse, while Lombardo just got better.

Interesting video! I remember when the first Slayer record was released. At that time I never would have expected Dave Lombardo would eventually become an iconic drumming superstar. I also would never have imagined Slayer would ever be playing stadiums in front of such large crowds. The world has changed a lot since then I guess.

I'm guessing you mean "low to mid spring tension" compared to direct drive pedals and such, am I right? He always says he uses high spring tension. Anyway, GREAT video. I love Dave's drum-playing, I've watched his videos lots of times and you did an extremely good work explaining his techniques! Thanks.

Thank you!! This is great! Is groove is amazing. Even though Paul Bostaph is an amazing drummer, Divine Intervention sounds great, i think that Slayer loose some quality with the when Dave left.

Bostaph gets a lot of heat, but yeah, 90% of people just assume it was lombardo. Personally, GHUA is probably my fav Slayer album. Bostaph is a very underrated fluid drummer. Also had the pleasure of seeing John Dette play with them, and that guy is a weapon.
