That coming back from injury early + double weight cut + beating by gaethje really took a toll, cause its looks like not only did he lose that durability and chin, but also some of that athleticism. And for a style as weird and as unorthodox as his, you need that athleticism to be effective

I think Tony lost a lot of his athleticism after all the injuries he's gotten, he used to used to be this freak athlete who could compete with nearly everybody, to a guy who looks a lot slower and way less durable nowadays. The massive beating he took against Gaethje certainly didn't help, but his last 2 wins before that fight were doctor stoppages in fights he was getting hurt in. The decline started before anybody could really notice.

About the fighters chin deteriorating after a bad beating… I think it was Chuck Liddel who was talking about how when you get knocked unconscious, anytime after that your body just refuses to let you take as much punishment and be as tough as you are and just shut down to save you from taking damage, practically what you were saying

It's not jus mma it happens in all combat sports it usually happen when a fighter is between the ages of 33-35 but it happens early like with Aldo because every fight he had was a a war he was done by 28 but also with Bernard Hopkins and saenchai they barely get any damage so they fought forever at a world class level

If this damage happens multiple times, our body accustoms to the situations given and gets "better" at protecting us from damage, flipping the knockout-switch quicker and quicker. So if you take insane damage once, your brain will be much more vigilant to activate the emergency protocol and hitting the reset-button much quicker. It's actually good, not bad for the fighter that their bodies signal to them that they have taken enough abuse for one lifetime. Better than getting alzheimers like some fighters did.
