Great episode!! I feel like we’re not even playing the same game! The things you build are always so creative and cool. The control room wall blew my mind and your truck being able to pickup up those containers is amazing. One idea might be to use merge blocks so you don’t have to deal with the third person camera jank, but that would require some creative reworking of blocks so it can still be disconnected which may or may not be worth it since your design is already so great. Either way greatly looking forward to seeing more and continuing to learn from you. Thank you for the video

Thanks! I am really enjoying your series! I started out thinking of doing something similar of ensuring there are crew quarters to support the facilities, but then the factory complex has taken a life of its own. I need to try the merge block. I think you are the 3rd person to suggest them, but for other reasons. Didn't think of the 3rd person view advantage. The pros are piling up.

I thought about merge blocks too however it will do things with the grid naming system. When you have multiple cargo containers and named blocks which are important to the function of the system, I think merge blocks would end up sabotaging you in the end.

That SCADA setup was really cool - in my current save I have static mines sending ore via pipelines all managed by event controllers and action relays, one of these would really tie it together. The hook lift is cool too. One tip for Build Vision: the menus wrap top-to-bottom and switchlock/reverse are always at the bottom - ctrl-scroll down to open menu -> scroll up to get to toggle.

Two fun suggestions: - Maybe you could place an event controller next to the refineries, toggling the chimney exhausts on whenever the refineries are refining. - I totally agreed with using the console block (holotable) in the control room, as you could place a blueprint of the entire facility on it. Another fun thing to do is have a skid that is meant to carry a small mining ship and containers to carry ore. With that, you can drive to an ore deposit, drop the skid, and use the ship to mine then bring the cargo to the skid instead of wasting energy on trips back to base. I made exactly that, but with a MAN HX instead of a HEMTT.

For my inventory sorting systems to avoid the cycling issue with sorter blocks, I often connect all my storage with one conveyer line to each cargo container group and on that line have a split that runs parallel for a few blocks then remerges with the main conveyer line then in the parallel split section, have a connector valve on one line and the sorter on the other. That way when I activate the sorters, I have it set to simultaneously disconnect the connector valve and vis versa. Love your analog status and control system, I usually do something similar but I've never gone in to so much detail. Very cool. Love the truck! Another fun project I like to do in the same vein is making something similar to those tractor vehicles that taxi aircraft at airports for moving large ships around a landing zone and into and out of hangars.

@@EngineeredCoffee I have tried recreating the vehicle with a merge block. As long as you are straight while connecting and all pistons/hinges have shared inertia tensor, no clang presents itself (otherwise it tries to does backflps). It also makes it so the camera doesn't get blocked by the container - because subgrids are treated differently than docked ships. (I am pretty sure i don't have any mods that would affect this)

You probably could have something on the back of the truck instread of the 1x1 static wheels,put them in a hinge and make a wheel free rotating there so when the piston is at a certain extent pushing the cargo on the trailer, the hinge for the little 1x1 wheel would go up and lift the back of the cargo up a bit, and the cargo container could roll on the 1x1 wheels instread of scarping on the middle of the container on the blast door parts.

For multigrid builds like your truck, using conveyer rotors/hinges to connect the grids gets rid of the camera issue given that you can separate the rotor/hinge into two parts and reconnect/connect them as you like. The game reads sub-grids via rotors/hinges/piston as one grid along with the main grid, the grids through connectors will always read as a separate grid which makes the camera funky.
@EngineeredCoffee
@EngineeredCoffee Ай бұрын
A rotor head sounds like a good option. I could leave the torque low to allow the container to auto level with the bed. 👍
@Rage_Spammer

@@EngineeredCoffeei can confirm, rotors as the hook is great for hooklift systems. Just put the rotor on the arm and a rotor head on the skid. It'll automatically align itself and you can set it to freely rotate. I made a MAN HX 10x10 with a hooklift system and have only ever clanged once, and that was because I left the hinges on and didn't lock the skid to the truck with landing gear. Beside that, it works really well even in multiplayer.

This is really good! For the truck, the batteries look great, a different route would be an engine on one side and you could access one of the cabins from the door on the back, and have a refueling port, but as of yet there isn't a real ladder (that fits most of the time) or easy way of getting onto small grids without a jetpack so, not really worth changing that, all good. And you could fit an engine in the frame as an alternative, which you may have done and I missed it. Idk if it needs one either

I was playing with the engine, didn't make the cut, but couldn't get it to fit a way I thought looked nice. I kinda want to do a 10x10 wheel base instead of 8x8 to get a little more room to add those things. We'll see. Access to the back door would be nice.

I've never used those 1x1 wheels, when you place them without a suspension can you still access friction settings? If so you could set the friction to zero and you don't need them to roll, the cargo pod will just slide over them. If this works you could figure out a way to add four zero-friction 1x1 wheels to the bottom 4 corners of the pod, this may stop the scraping when loading and the digging in when unloading as well. That truck look cool though, and the logic you used for the display panel in the base blew my mind 😆

No, I wish, those wheels are entirely decorative. They do have a good durability though. The wheel suspension is the part that has all the settings. Good idea though.

To everyone suggesting merge blocks: Pistons and batteries that close to sub-gridded merge blocks is a disaster waiting to happen. It also doesn't help that he has batts in the truck and in the crate right above the pistons where the merge block would go. I personally think the mag plate dropping the crate onto the struts and then reattaching is a much better (safer) idea. I dislike that the crate drags along the ground, and I'd have base hinge lift the whole thing up slightly off the ground so as not to damage the crate, but it's your truck and you can do what you want.
@EngineeredCoffee

Crate dragging is pretty standard in the real world, but they do make skids with rear wheels/rollers to help them slide. SE doesn't have a real analog for that small though.

Instead of a mag plate, could a merged block to a little bit better for the cargo? It would ajuste the alignement. Also it the merge block is further in on the container it would not screw the length.

Possibly, I would have to experiment with how Clang would react.

Hey man nice vid i just subbed but how did you get a small grid wall in a large grid base?
@EngineeredCoffee
@EngineeredCoffee 29 күн бұрын
It is attached to a hinge on the backside. The previous episode shows the build if your curious. There is also small grid on the landing pad with a rotor in the episode as well.

Your also a programmer. Aldo I'm not yet working is did get my diploma in automation (plc programing + installing systems at BASF) but I hate the old software, TI portal is good but Step7 and older sucks, I literally have to use a window 95 and xp to edit or make new programs for the old PLCs. I'm from Belgium so my English isn't great or the best.

I think it would have been better to have the color change to red when something is off. it will be visually more catching that the same color on/off.
@EngineeredCoffee
@EngineeredCoffee Ай бұрын
Fair, but can't really do that without a script or double lights that toggle, unless they added a 'set color' feature I'm unaware of. If it is an error or fault then a red or flashing light would be good.
