Originally, the symbiote didnt need to eat anything other Than negative emotions and adrenaline, however, the dumb writers at Marvel thought that this would make Venom op and that it would make him like a second Hulk, since he is always gaining more Power due to it feeding off of something that the human organism can create, and since the symbiote is always regenerating it's host, thus keep creating adrenaline infinitely. It's almost like the Hulk. Whenever he gets angrier he gets stronger, and the key factor of his transformation is his healing factor. same would happen to Venom. The longer he feels adrenaline, the stronger and more powerful he would get. We Even got to see this in spider-man 3, that's why Peter had to remove the costume for a bit since he knew that the symbiote was alive and that it needed to feed off of his adrenaline and negative emotions. However, in more recent years, they've retconned this, and they Now Made the symbiote/Venom some sort of an alien zombie un order to survive 😒

It's from the Lethal Protector era, when they decided to turn him into an antihero, and expanded the symbiote lore with Planet of the Symbiotes, making the forceful, parasitic "symbiotes" the norm, and Venom's offspring the weird ones. And those, fed off the adrenaline rush imposed on the hosts, but not necessarily in a direct "psychic vampire" way. More like a chemical one. In fact, hosts ended up completely consumed and dying of exhaustion. They weren't infinitely powered by the symbiotes, but rather "burned off" too quickly. That's why Peter was always tired during the black suit era. They suit was pulling all nighters on him while he should be sleeping. He was also dealing with both MJ and the Black Cat at the time. I'm pretty sure he was already exhausted without the suit messing with him :p
