Very nice Jon. How would you compare this to a Yamaha FSX5? Same Woods but the Martin costs 3 times as much here in Sweden Kind regards

I agree with Jon , a Sitka Spruce top coupled with Mahogany back and sides are one of the best tone-wood combinations out their. This combination is made even greater with Martins' torrefication process ( VTS). Like our good old uncle Jon.. simply amazing!!

Jon -- Thanks for the review on this guitar. I've got my sights set on this one, so I greatly appreciate your input. I too think the natural protein glue makes an appreciable difference. I'm about to pull the trigger. I think I'm going to do it.

I agree with you that the 18 series by Martin has a more crisp and clearer sound than the 28 series. I just purchased a custom iteration of the 1937 authentic with some modifications including sinker Mahogany back and sides. Maybe I will get to see you present and comment on a Martin 1937 Authentic D-18? Great presentation and representation of the sound.

@@NudeDragons I'm not sure sonically what the sinker brings to the table. I guess I was interested due to the age of the sinker Mahogany. I also think that due to the age of the sinker it may be closer to the wood that was actually used for the guitars made in the 30's. The look is what drew me to it. I do enjoy the sound but really concerned as to what will happen with age as the wood is treated to reproduce the sound. Not sure if I am a fan of VTS / Torrified as I build furniture and do not like kiln dried wood. I would prefer air dried.

Hello. I'm re-doing my comment again. My experiment continues with my 000-18 MD. It goes like this: Martin's ship with high action, higher then what i remember from the one's I bought over 50 years ago. So, In gradual increments, I had an excellent luthier take the action down THREE times. Truss adjustments, shaving the bridge bone saddle, with me testing it at each phase to make sure there was no buzz or fret-out. The result is tremendous. It just woke the guitar up. I use 12 gauge because anything less adversely effects tone, (phosphor/bronze, I usually use 80/20's) What was bright is now brilliant if played with a pick nearer the bridge, and over the sound whole the sound is much richer. This is strange because when you lower action a lot, you give the string less room to vibrate and that can cause different problems in performance and tone. So, the 'surgery' was very delicate and done in 3 phases. With that wonderful neck it feels almost like my favorite electric, and the sound is right up there with the best sounding guitars I've ever played. The action job made an amazing difference, not just in the expected playability, which has become effortless, but the totally unexpected, inexplicable, and very noticeable improvement in tone. It's like a big bell now.

The protein glue is only for gluing the braces. That is all. The binding is rosewood rather than the flamed maple on the 000 28 MD.

Jon thank you yes I was trying to decide between that and the 28th I have the 42 but it sounds the BTS top to my ear sounds just a little bit warmer maybe even muddier if that makes any sense where the 18 modern deluxe sounds brighter almost like not exactly like a no-win but a little brighter not brighter than a no in but just brighter than a 28. So thank you for the review it really helped me make a decision.

I tried and got rid of the 000-28 standard, 000-28 MD and 000-28 EC. None of them come close to the 000-18 modern deluxe, and I tried 6 of those to get the best one. I went to the retailer with a Nashville studio musician to help me evaluate since that place had three of them. I have to say that while I think the 000-18 MD is the best of any of Martin's 000's for a lot of reasons, any good dreadnought sounds almost infinitely better the any 000. The 000's have no depth or resonance compared to a D. They sound thin and superficial and the MD version is louder and brighter, but I could get a similar sound attaching metal strings to an empty paint bucket. The best I can say is they are more comfortable to hold, less bulky, , except the exotic necks are problematic unless you have huge hands. They are pretty useless as stand-alone instruments and require accompaniment or reverbed up amplification if you use them alone. Dreads sound beautiful alone. I'd forget any 0, 00, 000, or 0M, as hyped up overpriced, blinged up garbage, and I own one.....I'll end up trading it for half what I paid and get another Dread. Happy Hunting

Wonderful tone in this Jon. I would have thought that at that price they would include a pickup system though. Otherwise you can’t beat a Martin for quality and the intro was really sweet. 😃👍

@@NudeDragons That works out well for you 😃👍 But most manufacturers provide an option of the same model with no pickup at a significantly reduced price. Its a lovely guitar but I simply think it’s too expensive for a guitar of it’s type to come without a pickup system.

Wondering what the difference between this model and the 1967 000-18 might be. I bought a new one in that year at Manny's in NYC for $212.00 . Had it for 10 yrs before it was stolen. Am interested in buying the same model now after all these yrs, as it left a huge hole in my life. So the ques. is .. is a standard 000-18 the same as what I bought re: action and tone, or .. ?

Hi! Great video ! How comfortable and effortless the neck is ? Compared to a Taylor guitar which would you choose? Not for tone , just the playability.

The thing is Taylor used to have the most comfortable necks in the 90s.. and that’s why I bought two Taylor 510s (6&12 strings) these days the Martin guitars that I’ve played is just as comfortable but I prefer the tone of the Martins✌️❤️
