Splendid. I saw them both in a pub in Brighton when they released 'Life & Limb'. I have my signed copy of that LP up on the shelf. A cherished possession.

Swarb had something that I've never heard in any other fiddler. Such a privilege to have seen them when they first teamed up.

If you played the same song over and over since you were a child, you'd be able to implement an infinite amount of subtlety to every note.

I am really sorry I really didn't want to offend or upset. This was just so far from the original I really thought it was awful. I am a Geordie and a singer and 64 so I think I know.

Tim, having read your comment I can see why you prefer an other version; which would be regarded as the traditional one. This is a miner's song originally sung acapaella with solo lead and an option of additional chorus by those present or those in a vocal group. The vocal-only version has a different tune to the one presented here and time signature is also more even-paced in comparison. With reference to the McCarthy/Swarbrick arrangement, it's a (mere) half-century+ old arrangement between the two great musicians with interplay betweeen the guitar and fiddle added to the traditional lyrics. The tempo is faster and hence delivery of Martin's vocal would perhaps leave some, hearing for the first time, trailing in the verse while he was at the chorus. No doubt, any folk song has a history that can develop with each version contributing to it. Having heard this song for the first time today it's original arrangement (The Wilsons), it is very accessible to the lyric and perhaps even singing along. The instrumental version is a different tune and with the deft touch of Dave and Martin transforms it into a more orchestrated piece; complete with to and fro soloing, but keeps the essential story of the miners' life, outlook and grievances intact. I enjoyed both versions and as a vocalist yourself, I can see the appeal of the non-instrumental arrangement with it's more communal feel in in its delivery. I'm sure both versions will, with the aid of newer performers and performances and existing ones, with a hint of YT, will keep such songs alive in folk music consciousness,

Sorry but this is a terrible rendition of a great Newcastle song. An absolute disgrace it bears no resemblance to a wonderful song. Just two guys indulging themselves with random themes which have absolutely nothing to do with anything. Dreadful

@@CRedfearn1983 I really dont think you are a Newcastle lad and neither are Martin Carthy and Dave Swarbrick. Their interpretation is an absolute abomination in terms of the sweet, simple and tuneful song delivered with some vigour. Try listening to some original native editions. I tend by my words, an awful version absolutely not representative of the original song. These jobbing, go around folksters are just trying to flatter themselves with new interpretations of classic folk songs. I tell you their interpretation once again is absolute rubbish. Regards Tim

@@timmiddleton6514, what do you think of the Wilsons' version?
@timmiddleton65143 жыл бұрын
@@lauraokeefe2698 Hi Laura much better but I really think it should be sung by a couple of people without any instrumental stuff. I haven't played for years now but thinking about starting to sing and play again. Tim
