I don't know why, but this song brings me to tears. I have gone through many hardships in my life, and will continue to go through them in the near future. The lyrics resonate with me, but Cathy's stoic, almost bitter performance sells it in a way that's difficult to describe

I first heard this at the age of 8 in 1972 when a supply teacher at my primary school used to sing it whilst playing his guitar. I recall searching for it on KZbin around 2007 before these videos were uploaded and couldn't find it. I always thought the lyrics were rather odd- 'go dress yourself all in your best..and I'll take you to the cruel war in High Germany'.

Either the War of Spanish Succession (1701-14), or the Seven Years War (1756-63), it's not entirely clear which war this is supposed to reference, which makes sense because Europe kept tearing itself apart every other decade.

It is much more likely to be the War of the Spanish Succession when the Duke of Marlborough took his army up the Rhine from The Netherlands to Bavaria. High Germany in this context refers to the mountains of southern Germany. Marlborough linked up with Prince Eugene of Savoy commander of the Austro Hungarian army and together they defeated the French and their Bavarian allies at the battle of Blenheim.
