I don't know why, but this song brings me to tears. I have gone through many hardships in my life, and will continue to go through them in the near future. The lyrics resonate with me, but Cathy's stoic, almost bitter performance sells it in a way that's difficult to describe

First time I heard High Germany, it was performed by two danish artists in an irish pub in Eindhoven. Incredible how we bond as a species when good music and alcohol are involved haha

I sang it with some entertainers in a pub in Gaborone, Botswana. It's true, nothing narrows the mind like foreign travel. You realise that people like a drink, a joke and a song the World over.

This was one of the first English folk songs I ever heard. It's amazing how Martin Carthy's singing and guitar technique have developed over 50 years!😀

Great English folk song, a personal favorite of mine. The song came out of the 18th century during the Seven Years' War.

I came here from a comment on a "The Longest Johns" shanty melody called "The Cruel Wars", which was composed from 3 songs like this by a entirely separate band called "The Dreadnoughts".

A Song about the 30Years War. 1618-1648. The biggest Conflict between Catholics and Protestans ever. Every major World Power fought there against each onther. They fought on German Ground and its until today the most devastating War in Germany.

I first heard this at the age of 8 in 1972 when a supply teacher at my primary school used to sing it whilst playing his guitar. I recall searching for it on KZbin around 2007 before these videos were uploaded and couldn't find it. I always thought the lyrics were rather odd- 'go dress yourself all in your best..and I'll take you to the cruel war in High Germany'.

I love this,, and the paintings too. What is the painting at the scene at the burnt out cottage, after some sort of skirmish? It is so atmospheric, almost like a war photo. So many paintings of wars show battles, this one shows the sordid reality.

Either the War of Spanish Succession (1701-14), or the Seven Years War (1756-63), it's not entirely clear which war this is supposed to reference, which makes sense because Europe kept tearing itself apart every other decade.

@@Branflakes143 The most likely candidate is the War of Austrian Succession. Either way the English were involved in a lot wars in a period of eighty years or so which involved battles in High Germany.

@@Lt_Voss The English did not participate in The Thirty Years War. It is much more likely to be the War of the Spanish Succession when the Duke of Marlborough took his army up the Rhine from The Netherlands to Bavaria. High Germany in this context refers to the mountains of southern Germany. Marlborough linked up with Prince Eugene of Savoy commander of the Austro Hungarian army and together they defeated the French and their Bavarian allies at the battle of Blenheim.
