It is sad that English folk has been neglected compared to Irish or Scottish for example. This channel is doing a valuable service.

Ironic given the english tried to supress them of their folk culture centuries ago. I guess sit made them value it more than the english do.

As an American, I wanted to hear the voice of my cousins and ancestors, but I was disgusted by how hidden away English folk was. I know this song isn't quite as old as I mean but England and the English are my people in truth and the preservation of their blood, culture, and song is incredibly important to me. Thank you for doing what you do.
@hlodovvig Жыл бұрын
What do you mean when you say this song isn't quite old? The war mentioned in the song happened 300 years ago, most likely it's the 7 Years War or the War of the Spanish Succession (XVIII c.)

I don't know why people keep saying this refers to Holland. The Netherlands were considered part of "Low Germany" due to the elevation, High Germany was in the south near the Alps, and English soldiers certainly did fight there in the War of the Spanish Succession, indeed it was there that they won the decisive Battle of Blenheim
@MrSharky334 Жыл бұрын
Probably from the misapprehension that “high” means “northern” lol

Hearty felt song. This song tells about true things that have been destroyed from today's society. I bet the whole class of children would weep singing this in school because of the beauty and truth in it.

This was in England? I'm asking because I'm generally interested in American folk music. I'm from Appalachia and lots of our folk music here is directly from The British isles. Lots of songs are almost exactly the same as Irish and Scottish songs and even occasionally an English song. From what I've been reading this song was also popular in America but I haven't found any American versions of it.

What's with that pronunciation of Route? Never heard anyone from the UK say it like that.

That's because it's not the word route. It's the word rout - it rhymes with shout. A rout when soldiers flee from battle in a disorganised panic.
